I'm done buying knives (with pics)

I consider myself a knife user and not a collector. However, a lot of the knives I have bought are still NIB and it is turning into a collection. I do not need any more knives. So unless something comes along that just speaks to me or has some new miracle steel, I am done.

I have now gotten myself a few ZDP-189 knives and a S90V model and after seeing how they hold an edge, I don't want anything less.

Here is most of my collection (sorry for the crappy pics):

Knives1-1.jpg

Knives are listed top to bottom. The ones with a bag under them are NIB. The Tyrade is new also but doesn't have a bag under it.

Left column - Spyderco: S30V Native, S90V Manix 2 (x2), H1 Salt 1, Drop point D'Allara (x2), ZDP-189 Stretch 2, Chowke, ZDP-189 laminate Caly 3

Middle column - Benchmade: Full size Griptilian, Mini-Rukus, Ritter Mini-grip, 950-1 Black Rift, 950-801 Carbon fiber Rift, 950 Rift (main EDC), 710-801 M4 (x2), 10700 Nagara, Mini Skirmish, 14210 HK, Mini-grip with oval hole and a wave I added, 930 Kulgera

Left column - Kershaw: ZDP Shallot, All black Storm 2, Tyrade, RAM, E.T., Lahar, Cyclone, OD-1

Far Right top: A custom by Patrick Randall here on the forums. 1/8" A2 steel by Paul Bos and desert ironwood handle with stainless hardware. Really pretty wood.

Far right bottom: Original Camillus Heat

Not pictured: A SE delica, kershaw chive, ZDP mule, and some multi tools and junk knives.

Here is the custom to show the wood and leather:

The sheath isn't perfect neither is the fit and finish although it is quite good. I haven't really used it for anything other than cutting some paper because it is too big for most of the things I need a knife for. However, if in the woods a lot I'm sure it would make a great user.

So am I the only one who has accumulated knives to the point they don't see a need to get any more? I'm sure at some point I will sell the NIB knives and the duplicates. I just don't have a need for this many if I am using them. I mainly carry a few and they work and I don't feel the need to switch it up much. I still like knives but need to find a new direction. It will probably be sharpening and then maybe I will try making them again.

Sorry for the long post and let me know what you think of my collection. Thanks,

Ryan

PS Here is a pic of my puppy just cause she's so darn cute and it was the only other pic on my camera:

That is some very sweet collection. However it might be so that after while you happend to notice that you just have couple of more "last knives" in the mail. Buying knives is very addictive.

Well, I've accumulated them to the point where I certainly don't need any more - actually I'm well past that point - but I continue to greatly enjoy collecting (and trading).

another knife user, exclusively...i have reached that point also; got fixed and folders for nearly every situation...i try hard not to duplicate what i already have; that is not easy to do...i pretty much will only buy a new knife only if it has great value in doing so...

Maybe it's a good thing you don't own any bark river knives, you may double your collection.

Man! I'm right there w/ you on that sentiment. I'm trying desperately to sell off my knives and only keep the ones I really, really want. No new knives w/out selling some.

So far I'm hanging in there. For right now there's nothing on the way to me and I've got at least 5 on the way to others. Now I just need other people to stop posting good knives for sale.

You know, I don't see a Spyderco Military in there, and the Ti version is just around the corner, with rumors of sprint runs.

I'd keep saving my money if I were you.

Oh, and you don't appear to have a Busse, that should be fixed too.

Your welcome.:D

I love the Chokwe ! A special design that is a great slicer. it works well for me. I was also amazed how much I like the affordable Nagara.
And indeed, as Joshua suggests, a Military is in fact a kind of "mandatory" knife for any collection.

If I'd make one suggestion, it is that you could perhaps add a more gentle "lifestyle" kind of knife which is equally at home at the table - really something different from the strong utility blades you have. It could be a way of adding variation.
I made a few video reviews of this kind of knives, and perhaps you want to check my laguiole and my Chambriard reviews to see how they are in the hand.
Of course, tastes differ, this is just a friendly suggestion.

well if you are done buying, you could start giving away. I'll take one of the 710-801 M4s you have there ;)

Thanks for the replies.

The Ti military I have thought about and I'm actually on a pre-order for it. But since it is going to be a production piece I might hold off on getting it. They don't really do much for me in pictures and look too big.

I'm also not really into the Busse scene. They just seem to expensive for what you get. I can get a completely custom made to my specs knife that I'm sure is just as strong for less. I'm also not really into choppers. I have swung a machete a whole bunch keeping up my 5 acre yard over the years and swinging heavy knives seems too much like work anymore. I have chainsaws for a reason. I go camping often but have never needed to make a shelter or chop up wood for a fire. There are usually plenty of branches already on the ground for a fire.

I do have a 3 blade case, maybe a stockman pattern? I use to carry it around in my pocket a lot with some change and my keys but I haven't seen it in awhile. Will have to look. I also have a little one blade case knife with damascus blade but it is reallllly small. My best friend gave it to me and I don't carry it much. Forgot about those two as well as others I'm sure. But even when I did carry the case I never used it much. I'm just used to pulling out my Rift from my front right pocket, using it, and putting it back.

I do usually have 3-4 knives on me but they are usually to play with or to show friends while the Rift sees most of the work. I do plan on putting the new stretch 2 into rotation and have a feeling it and one of the Manix 2s will see some pretty good use. I would also like to flip the clip on the skirmish and wave it because I do like a waved knife and the mini-grip is just a tad small for me.

Another long post, sorry about that. I guess I'm going to get back out to the shop and try to figure out a way to get some G11 cut up to go on that mule. Now I need to decide if I want stainless steel or carbon fiber rods as pins.

I have a collection similar to yours and I'm in the same boat. I just don't need anymore knives. I like to carry and use my knives and right now there aren't enough days in the week to use them all.

I have too many knives these days as well. I really try to fit each one into my rotation, but it is becoming pretty impractical. I've sold around 10 knives over the last few months and I have as many more that I hope will go soon.

I hear you on the zdp189 steel. After EDCIng a Yuna EQ with zdp/ats laminate blade I don't really care as much about knives using other steels. I still look but I'm not as tempted to buy as I used to be. Plus I got 3 knives I'm waiting for him to make plus I already own 2 of his knives. I'll probably sell offor give away a lot of my knives I don't use that much.

If you like wave opening knives, how about an Emerson? or you get some of those spydercos modded.

Not a big fan of Emerson knives. Between the liner locks and the chisel grinds there's not much I like that I have seen. I might mod some of them but most of the Spyderco's l think would look pretty awkward. The way the blade has such a hump to allow for the hole, a wave would just be a big half circle hook that would look terrible. That or look like Charlie Mike's skirmish  That's a knife only a father could love, no offense. :foot:

Actually I think the skirmish could be modded to have a wave and look pretty good. If I can get the titanium tapped for tip up I'm sure I will do it. I think my mini grip looks pretty good and I did a mini grip with the round hole for my best friend and I think it looks almost like it came that way.

Edit: Here is a good example why I probably won't wave any of the spydercos

I'll never have enough knives. Nevahhh!

I even have this funky looking Leatherman Ukiah someone gifted me. ;)

That is a great example of a knife that just wasn't practical for me to carry these days. People looked at you kinda funny when you swing out a bone-saw to open your mail. :D

Good luck. I bet you buy another knife within 4 months.

Hi. My name is George, and I have a problem...
