I just placed an order for a KMG!

And, I just finished assembling my new drill press; it's the Ridgid 1550.


I had originally planned to buy the Coote...but, for around $250 more I could get the basic KMG w/ platen.
 
Congratulations on the KMG!! You WILL NOT be disappointed. It's a great machine and built like a tank. I still remember the joy of opening that box. I stayed up all night painting and putting it together and then had to wait for my motor to arrive :(. But it's all worth it once you first hear it purr.

haha! I couldn't go to sleep last night because of the anticipation of ordering it this morning. I called Rob as soon as Beaumont opened.

Now, I'm waiting for Tracy to call me back so I can order the Beaumont disc, glass platen liner, etcher, and some other stuff.

I also picked up a nice set of drill bits. I have tight budget for the things I need; but, I'm getting the best of everything that I can afford. I'm looking at it as a one-time purchase. I won't have to buy all this stuff again.

I salvaged two old desks for free, which will become 4 workstations/tables. I have to move my shop around often, so I'm building it with modularity in mind. I'm going to start on the tables Saturday. I'm pretty excited to finally be getting some good equipment and to be building up my workshop.

I enjoy seeing the workshop pics and bench/table builds, the how-to's for everything I can think of, and everything else in Shop Talk. Thanks, everyone.
 
Wow, sounds great. I have a Coote and really like it, however I have been thinking of upgrading to the KMG lately... more options, accessories etc.

I've been using an angle grinder with cut-off wheels and a grinding wheel to cut out the blank. Then, cleaning up the profile with a HF 1x30 belt sander, and sanding drums in a pretty crappy drill press. I use a scroll saw to cut out handle material. To sand flats and flatten handle material, I use a granite slab with sand paper taped to it. It works, but is horribly slow. The granite slab, I think, is my most used tool...unfortunately. The Beaumont disc will speed up the flattening process; but, I'll still use the granite slab and sanding blocks for finish work.
 
You should be excited... The KMG is great. I am sure mine will outlive me. Happy grinding!
 
Good purchase; I love mine.

You might want to paint it before getting everything set up. The KMG will rust like crazy.
 
The best thing about getting a new KMG is realizing just HOW #%@#%@ HEAVY the thing is... it's built like a tank =) It makes you realize just how substantial a tool you just invested in, and makes you feel all tingly knowing that you now own the best there is =)
 
I was admiring the KMG in it's cardboard box today, trying to figure out the best way to paint it. It looks like partially taking it apart is going to be the way.

In person, it doesn't look like a $1000 turd. lol I painted it a hammered bronze color; it looks nice.
 
I've been/am sick with a cold, and didn't start on making the tables yet. I painted the KMG and reassembled it, and that's it.

I have a question about the base plate, do you mount the base plate to the table? I assume yes; but, I don't see specific holes for mounting the plate to the table. It sounds like a silly question; but, there are holes for everything else already in the base plate, so I figure there should be specific holes for mounting the plate to the table.
 
Yep, four countersunk holes, two of them under your grinder, looks like.

Definitely mount it securely to the table for added rigidity.

Great lookings grinder!! Contrats!
