I'm Excited!

OK, sometimes it takes me a long time to finish a project. I got my disc sander wired up and it's running...CCW, because I'm left handed.

I also have my motor for the KMG wired up for 220v, it works, and I didn't electrocute myself. I'm going to finish it up this afternoon, and hopefully the KMG will awaken.

Crap, I need a belt...not sure what size, though. I'm running step pulleys.
 
Great looking grinder and, from what I see in the pictures, looks like it is placed in a shiny new shop. I'm definitely envious.
 
I talked to Rob and he said the belt is an A-23 V belt. That's probably basic easy info, but I didn't want to get the wrong belt, so...

I wish the shop was mine. I'm sort of renting space inside a big warehouse. That's why my tables and equipment are modular or mobile.
 
The KMG is running!

I put on a belt and rotated it by hand to line up the tracking. It wouldn't track very well. I adjusted it and got it as good as it was going to get, then turned the KMG on. It was running in reverse and threw the belt.:eek:

I had to change rotation direction on the motor. I also let the tooling arm slide in about .25" and readjusted the tracking. I turned it on and it ran in the correct orientation and the tracking was almost perfect; a tiny adjustment and the belt was tracking very well.

My 2 hp motor is very old, and a little noisy. Other than that, the KMG has a smooth, consistent shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh sound.

2hp and 220v should last me for a long time. When the old motor finally croaks (and the two more replacements), it'll be time for VS.
 
I'm having fun!

The KMG is almost magical compared to the old, ragged HF 1x30. The platen is so huge and flat, I was able to flatten the flats of two small scandi's I'm working on without really moving them across the platen because they fit within the platen's boundaries.

After a while, I was getting a little stuttering from the belt over the platen. I removed the belt and wiped the glass down, and the stuttering went away.

The disc grinder seems so simple...at least, mine is...a disc on a motor. This machine will take some practice. It seems like you just hold your piece flat against the disc and drag straight across away from the center. I think that's the general concept, but the disc has its own quirks to learn.
