I'm getting more and more skeptical of GEC knives.

I am amazed that this thread has actually gone so far

I don't think this thread is very well titled, implying bad experience where no experience exists. I think it's fair to be critical of knives that don't come up to your expectations, but you do at least have to try them out first.

There are enough complaints about GEC knives on this site, even among the faithful here, to make me wonder whether I want to buy any and try them for myself. Will that fit in the title block? :)

There are enough testimonials about GEC knives here and elsewhere to sell me on a GEC.
I've scanned this forum for years and have found that the opinions of some posters are of value to me and the opinions of other posters are worthless to me.
Heard a lot of praise for GEC from those I respect.
Sold.
Now I just gotta narrow it down... too many really nice options.

Don't you think the title implies that the author has some personal experience with GEC knives? I think people are right to complain if their experiences are bad, I certainly would, but from what I've seen here myself, users seem overwhelmingly positive about GEC. Your scepticism now seems to have been overcome to the extent that you've ordered a knife from the company. I hope you're happy with the knife you get, if not you should send it back :)

Jakemex, hope you enjoy your GEC knife when it arrives and I am interested in your impressions at that time. The thread regardless of some who have complained has certainly put a positive spin on their products.

Why do we come here? To read about a knife or brand we do not know and see pics of knives that we may never have the money to purchase or because it is made in a country foreign to us and not available. I've read many threads here about GEC knives. So many positive ones and some positive and negative and some just negative. Reading gives us experience without the need to buy said item, right? Here's an example of a thread that gives me cause to wonder about buying a GEC knife.

Looks like that's one instance of an unsharpened blade (which is easily fixed under warranty). If that's the biggest quality issue a manufacturer has, they're doing pretty awesome. You won't find another production traditional knife nowadays that matches the quality of GEC.

Absolutely, those are certainly some reasons people READ the threads here, but the thread above was started by someone who'd had direct experience of a GEC knife. When people post threads about knives they don't have any experience of, it's usually in the form of a question rather than a statement. Hence, my comment about the title. Still, this must have been an informative thread for your position to have changed, from saying that you're not sure you'll ever buy a GEC knife, to actually ordering one. I'm not sure anything has been said here that hasn't been said elsewhere, but I'm glad you found it helpful, that your scepticism appears to have been swept aside, and that you now feel confident enough to shell out for a GEC knife. Once again, I hope you're happy with it

Jakemex: I just knew my thread on the 2012 Tradational Forum knife spurred you to start this one. The "debate" there was essentially how do you treat a special knife with one poorly or unsharpened blade? I was hesitant to send THIS knife back. I'm perfectly capable of sharpening a knife. I figure if I can sharpen a mulching mower blade on a lawnmower, an axe, or machete (without a grinding wheel) I just might be able to handle the forum knife if I wanted to. That issue is settled on that thread. I'm doing it myself because I don't want to send it back. They might replace the blade with one that is not appropriately marked or whatever. I was unhappy but not upset. But as you may have read, I am trying to decide which one to get next... does that sound like an unhappy GEC customer?

I've never handled a gec. I like the looks and everything else bout them but all there knives seem bulky. I like the 79 whittler and at 3 3/4 closed is a great length but it just seems so wide and heavy. I ain't going to say I don't like them I'm just not familiar with their patterns. I'm not picky bout fit and finish bc most of my knives is put to use but I hate bulk and weight. So I'm just skeptical to the point of not knowing. I'm also having a hard time deciding which pattern I want for my first gec knife. I like their smaller stockman patterns but the 79 and bullet end jack with a clip is also calling to me. Then the buckaroo is wanting to get in my pocket! Guess they are worst things then trying to decide on a new knife.

Actually, I just read your thread this morning, it was not my impetus to start this thread. I was trying to push myself over the edge and get one.

No, I don't think you are an unhappy customer of GEC. I have one on its way to me right now. I'll post pics and make my comments known when it's received. And if the blade's not sharp enough for me, I'll re-profile etc and just move along. "It's a tool not a jewel" as far as I'm concerned. I didn't want to post the usual, I can't make up my mind type of post. I had my mind made up a long time ago about which knife I wanted to buy from GEC, and didn't have the money.

I really enjoyed the recent post with all the premium GEC knives. They really dazzle. That's what made up my mind. A regular user GEC will be more than I need.

That's all folks.
