I'm hard on working knives but this sharpener keeps 'em sharp

Blues Bender,

I couldn't help but notice that you've posted 4113 times on this forum in just over two years. That comes out to a little over 11 posts per day.

What else do you do with your time, besides sharpen knives, i mean? Not trying to start anything. I'm just curious. Are you a happily retired man? I wish i were retired.

The back bevel is interesting because it is so wide, which would normally indicate an especially acute edge -- maybe something in the 10 dps range. But with a poorly controlled belt grinder, it's hard to tell what the underlying geometry is.

But it should make the pull-through sharpener basically a tool to create and maintain a microbevel, which is the easiest way to keep an edge sharp.

Bingo.

I think that's rad how care free you are about sharpening

I mean if it works for you, who cares?

Git er dun!

However,

I'm very skeptical it cuts paper cleanly

Any pics?

Let me touch it up just a bit. I'll be back in a few with a pic.

I'm not even sure what to say...

I see large burr formations, point issues, and a drastic recurve that's well on its way.

I understand the sharpening frustration some have with this knife though. They are ground very thick as can be seen by the bevel height, mine was the same way until I reground it. In my experience the high bevel height on a thick blade tends to make the edge weak and offer less than ideal edge retention. Regrinding the primary grind is always the better option because it still allows for a compound geometry but it requires the skill and tools to do so.

I had one little snag out of four slices.

And i was hitting the paper too slowly trying for perfection. i should have just done quick slashes at those four corners but i didn't so some of the cuts were crooked. But as i've been saying all along, it's good enough for me.

Mykem,

I just read your comment about another forum member above.

I find it's in poor taste.
Don't be offended, but If I were you
I would delete that comment and apologize.

It really shows you in a bad light and displays poor character.

I don't think your that guy so I know you'll do what's right.

Deadbox hero,

I've been in and out of here for a little over 15 years and have 151 posts, an avg. of 10 per year.

I don't have "poor character, " but maybe i'm just not familiar enough with how the people who are here all the time prefer how other members who spend much less time here conduct themselves.

So far, everyone just seems to be speaking their mind. So i'm speaking mine too.

Looks very mediocre,
It's sharp enough for you and that's what matters.

However, alot of dudes have decided thats just not sharp enough.

The only way we have all found to make knives sharper is by moving away from gadgets.

You could learn a ton of stuff reading here if you accept the criticism that your knife is not very Sharp.

Or just shrug it off and live in bliss.

Thanks for sharing
Shawn

For what its worth, the worst damage I've seen people do to their knives over time by sharpening has been with a:
bench grinder
grooved steel
belt sander
stones

Overall the damage from the scrapers don't even make the list because because the contact area is limited by the tool, whereas the other tools can toast the entire edge, primary etc. Whatever works, a user knife isn't going to last forever.

With scraper type sharpeners, alternate sides every few passes, use oil or otherwise clean it periodically as you work with a tooth brush or similar. If the heads don't have a gap between them and the unit is capable of being disassembled, take it apart and add some shims - a layer or two of popcan aluminum will work. If the knife is very dull, you can use a bit of pressure to get the heads cutting and then taper off to a light touch to shape the edge - they work very much like a single tooth file. They can do a respectable job and the harm if any is limited to the bevel area (usually).

I would never brag about the edges I make with one, but that doesn't mean they can't make a good edge. I don't know nuthin bout the rest of the back n forth...

I live in an empty house with only a chair, desk, and laptop in it. The laptop stays running 24/7 with bladeforums open.

I don't even own any knives, I just like to post on this forum.

Shawn,

Besides the meyerco, i own a nice little Gatco kit.

After a lot of trial and error and after i learned the system's subtleties, i'm very able to put some much more than "mediocre" edges on most blades should i choose to do so.

For the endura, i choose a quick and dirty sharpening. For me and how i use that beast, that's all it needs.

And here's a pic for your skeptical side. :)

We may disagree at times, but I always appreciate the fact that you have a sense of humor. ;)

Ahhhhh, that 'splains it. Thanks for satisfying my curiousity. And thanks for a good laugh too.

Oh, please consider buying a used refrigerator and stove so you can eat in more often. It'll save you a TON of dough and they will pay for themselves in no time.

If it works for you, that's cool. I work with guys that get by with a dull Exacto knife all day.

I do find this post kind of odd, tho. This is a knife forum full of people who obsess over edges, myself included, and I'm not very great at sharpening, but I much prefer stones and a strop.

A side question, was the Endura 4 wave out 10 years ago?

Hmmm. Good question it's either a little bit more than that or a little bit less.

I found a mention of it in the May, 2006 spyderco catalogue. So yeah, around 10 years ago. Maybe they were out earlier, i'm just not sure. I also saw some mentions of in May, 2006 right here on this forum.

All i remember is seeing that wave used on a video when they first came out and thinking, "is he pulling that blade out of his pocket while it's already open?"

After i watched more carefully i knew i had to have one. It was a good choice. :)

A few years ago, i thought i lost the thing. Man, was i bummed! My wife found it under and behind the work bench in the garage. Whew!

Well you are in luck Bender. There are lots of giveaways on the forum and members sometimes gift knives to other members so perhaps you will eventually acquire some knives and maybe even something to use to sharpen them other than the bottom of the coffee cup on your desk. :)

Coffee cop sharpener? Why didn't i think of that? I have a few ceramic coffee cups. I can't wait to try this. I know some of you guys think a coffee cup will work better than that meyerco sharpener. I'll let you know.
