Most of the story is at
http://www.equipped.org/rskmk1.htm, but let me take a stab at explaining.
I have wanted to do a knife for quite some time. What I wanted to do wasn't considered commercially viable by any manufacturer I spoke with, too boring, too big a risk, too small a market. I was unable to interest anyone who I consider a quality producer into producing it for sale through their usual channels. Les was willing to produce the knife I wanted made, to my specs, but I'd have to buy them all and sell them myself. My knife, my risk.
Two problems with that. One, I don't have the bucks or credit to buy the minimum production run, not even close. Two, I didn't have the desire to get into the e-commerce business. Brent Blue, a longtime friend and Equipped To Survive supporter, offered to take the considerable risk and he already had the e-commerce site and was set up to service the customers. I knew he'd take care of the inevitable hiccups and that was also critical. Thus the RSK Mk1 was born.
Brent's gamble has paid off, for which I am extremely pleased. Those who can appreciate the qualities of this knife can purchase one at a reasonable price. Perhaps not as cheap as they'd like, but the vast majority seem very pleased with the RSK Mk1 and many have said it compares favorably, in
terms of performance, with knives costing two or three times or more. That was the goal. That, to me, is how you define the value. I am extremely gratified by these comparisons and the positive reception for the RSK Mk1 and the Mini. It's not often that you aim for something and hit the bullseye on the first shot. Were it not for Brent, there would be no RSK Mk1. He deserves to reap the rewards for the risk he took--and still takes every time he orders another run.
I hope this explanation helps you understand how we got here and why Aeromedix remains the sole source for these knives. Thanks for the opportunity to explain.
