I'm new to this... First Serious Blade

It would be very hard to beat the deal CDNN Sports has on Browning Ice Storms which are made for Browning by Mcusta. They are priced well below wholesale at $27.00 (a Mcusta would normally run you at least 3 times that). They have a VG-10 blade, one of the best stainless out there, alum handles, and a very low ride clip. Mine arrived shaving sharp and hold the edge very well. No need to spend the big bucks in order to own a high end knife!

some really good choices here, I've read many positive things about all the blades suggested here.
if your having a hard time choosing, may I suggest picking the ones that seem to fit your needs and
what looks good to you.

then google each one you like (which will probably send you back here to the specific blade thread)
and read up on it and decide.

I'd like to add the Victorinox OHT (one hand trekker) it does so much for so little (price),
not as pretty as some here, but really a nice package.

good luck and keep us updated ;)

If you're leaning towards the Kershaw Blur but worried about the assisted opening IIRC you can take the knife apart(easily done with a couple torx bits) and just simply remove the torsion spring which causes it to "fling" open. It's easily done and could probably be done in less the 10-15 minutes. Maybe someone more knowledgeable could confirm this or not....

I don't personally own a Blur but have heard alot of great things about them, I do however own several other Kershaw's and have been extremely satisfied with their overall quality and fit and finish. IMO go for the Kershaw!

Well, since you specified heavy, why not get a Spyderco Endura with the stainless handle? If you want a similarly sized blade but a little less mass, the FRN version with stainless liners is a heck of a great knife.

On the Benchmade side, the various Griptilian models are great rugged knives with hand-filling grips that aren't too heavy. I prefer the Pardue design with a round hole opener, but you can get them with a thumb stud if you like.

Don’t get a Spyderco Delica. I apologize. I made the wrong recommendation. Don’t get any Spyderco knife. First you’ll get one despite the weird shape of the blade. Then you’ll get another one.

Soon you will be a ‘collector’. Now your girlfriend will think your weird and your future in-laws will suspect you of psychotic tendencies. You will start to regret spending so much money on stuff like holidays, furniture and food. You are now a knife addict.

Of the knives mentioned thus far, I wouldn't personally consider them to be very "heavy". The heavy folders that I like in that price range are:

Benchmade:
Mini-Rukus (615)
14200

Spyderco:
Mini Manix
Manix
Chinook
Stainless Steel Police
Stainless Steel Endura
ATR
Volpe

Zero Tolerance:
0200

Emerson:
Any model you can find under $150

Haha sounds like ever forum I get into... headphones, lasers, computers... "welcome to head-fi, sorry about your wallet" is a classic.

I just got back from school, thanks for the suggestions and your not making it any easier! (not that having many choices is a bad thing... crap lose-lose situation lol) time to hit up google again.

Regarding the Kershaw Blue, I never knew it was an assisted opener but i was in a rush this morning and just looked at specs. I live in the GTA area in Ontario, Canada, they legal? If they legal, then I would think an assisted opener is a plus though good to have that option.

I really don't mind anything maybe more difficult to use which might be a better product to something else. I'm not planning on buying a new blade for a long time, EDC at least (that's what they all so isn't it?") and want this to be good, I'm sure I could learn without cutting my fingers off.

Thanks for all the suggestions so far, now i have to sort through all this!

It's legal in Canada. Check the Canadian connection section for more details (regional communities).

But before you EDC something, you should check the local laws. Go to the Police Department and ask them directly, if possible get a copy of the article.

There are Federal laws on knives (criminal code) and local laws different for each cities.

I know Cold Steel isn't well-liked hereabouts, but I have only excellent things to say about their Voyager line. I carry the medium tanto point Voyager with the combo blade and love it.

Thanks for the info, I have checked this: http://www.mississauga.ca/portal/cityhall/bylaws and it doesn't seem to have anything about knives, and I couldn't find anything on the Ontario site though there were so many i might of searched for the wrong words.

sl.124, for what it's worth I love tactical folders and my taste for an EDC is a law enforcement/military type tactical. I own about a dozen or so of these types of folders and by far my favorite is my Benchmade Nitrous Stryker 912SBKD2. It's an assisted opener and it's built like a tank. You can find them for $100 online. I highly recommend checking them out if you've got a similar taste. The 912 is the tanto, the 913 is the spearpoint.

(For the record, I did not take this picture. I stole it from some other guy who also loves his Nitrous Stryker)

An Al Mar Sere 2000 would fit the bill. You can find good deals online.
Ya I'm looking at that one as a possibility, that and the blur look the best to me though what do I know lol. The blur is almost half the price though so I dunno.

By the way, anyone know any good sites that are based in Canada with good prices/CS, I don't want to pay customs and any credit card charges w/e that may apply, I dunno I have to read terms of services lol. Right now the only I found is http://www.warriorsandwonders.com/ though I really haven't been looking, just kinda came across it, the blue is $85 there comes out to about 110+tax/shipping. now for the sharpmaker...

Edit: Before I go to bed, would a Tanto blade be better than a regular blade for everyday stuff? I'm thinking no but they look cool

Benchmade Osbourne.

I have the 940, 930 and have a 943 on the way.

Kind of an endearingly ugly knife, the 940 is probably my favorite. Super smooth, and perfect size. S30V too. Find them online for around $125.

In your price range I can't think of anything I would rather have than a trusty Spyderco. Tough, high performance and reliable.

I agree with Absintheur that the Mcusta-made Browning Ice Storm is incredibly good at the price. It is worth at least $90, the price for the very beautiful but basically near the same Mcusta Stingray. I have it and a few other "real" Mcustas and the Browning is indeed as well crafted. A very high quality knife and for the price you can't go wrong (It is now priced closer to $40 but that is still a very good price). Check the linked site for other nice, well made Mcustas, these are truly great gentlemen knives in various styles.
You could also go a very different way and opt for a supremely elegant hand-made French Laguiole knife (it's important to have a real one of "Laguiole en Aubrac" or "Forge de Laguiole"). It is a great EDC knife for gentlemen purposes and it has a timeless beauty.

The spyderco delica and benchmade mini-grip are both excellent knives to start out on and the sharpmaker is an amazing sharpener. If you would like a slightly more highquality knife the Benchmade 930 kulgera is an amazing edc knife.
