I have never seen anything very risque or pornographic in anyone's avatar here. I have kids too. I think you are being a bit too conservative by expressing this opinion here. I know some people's religion tries to transform the human body into something evil. I think we, in modern times, should really try to undo the great evils that over-zeolous religions have caused in the past, especially in the puritan and victorian periods. Nowadays when Evangelical religious leaders are caught red-hande with male prostitutes and numerous catholic priests are proven to be pedophiles we should strive to let our children know that sex is not evil otherwise thay could become mentally imbalanced as the afor-mentioned zealots. I am against pornography because it totally degrades natural eroticism , love and sex; but I am against excessive censorship such as what you are proposing. My 2 sense.

I have to agree with this. If your kids are able to see our postage stamp sized avatars they are not just in the kitchen; but, sitting on your lap too. What's next; do we eliminate all of those photos of sharp metal objects, less the kids use the word "knife" in school and are branded terrorist?

I don't know why some choose to use the avatars they use; but, are we to form a commitee to censor avatars that offend every gender, creed, and religion? There are people out there who would like every woman's body draped with a burka. I disagree with them, and as long as the photos are kept clean and unpornographic; I don't see the need for censorship. Heck, if there is a TV set in your living room the kids have already been exposed to far worse.

I appreciate the input I've received on this post and I also appreciate the fact that people have changed their avatars, whether they agree with me or not.

Just a comment, I asked people to consider my request, I was not twisting anyone's arm to force them to change their avatars. I would not "disapprove" of them or publicly berate them if they chose to ignore my request, I was not going to email them, or post that they were "evil" or terribly bad people. I asked that they consider my request and act upon it if they felt like it was reasonable. I find this is a long way from censorship, I feel that censorship would have been forcing someone to change their avatar when they didn't want to. And if I had done this it would be wrong.

There were a few avatars that were pushing the envelope, they just weren't women in bikini's, you didn't have to use your imagination and you didn't have to "squint" to see them. I appreciate that most of these have been changed. I thank everyone for considering my request and my opinion whether you have agreed or disagreed. Also, Thank you to everyone for keeping your comments civil.

I don't feel this is censorship, but a question of good taste and common courtesy.

I appreciate the way this was handled by Porkerson. I'm sure Bully could have flexed his muscle and gotten certain posters or avatars banned, but he didn't.That shows courtesy on his part. Let's all show the same in return.

I can respect this request but, more importantly, I respect the manner in which the request was delivered.

I think many of us have been bothered by the repressive nature of global religious fundamentalism: Taliban, et al. Frankly, though, there is a huge leap between roving squads of "spiritual police" who deliver beatings outside of mud huts and Eric's request.

The more appropriate analogy might be a restaurant. One group of guys drinking a bit, having a good time and become a bit raucous. At the adjacent table, there is a Dad with his 6 year old daughter. The Dad asks the festive group to please monitor the language out of respect for his little girl. (Replace restaurant with campground, if you wish.)

I have been part of the group. I have been the Dad. When there is evidence of mutual respect and the request is not unreasonable, I have no problem with delivering or receiving the message.

Face it: The culture of BF and the rules laid down by Spark define W&C/Pirates Cove as the topless bar, subforums are restaurants (or restaurant/bars) to be managed, and the limits of societal decorum defined, as the local mods see fit.

Besides... Eric approves of my picture of a mud covered girl in a bathing suit.

This bugs me....all the bully said was "Hey, this is what's going on, anybody want to help me out, that would be greatly appreciated." I did not read a proposal of any kind in Erics' post, nor did i see any hint at censorship or lack of tolorance for one's choice of avatar. Instead of bringing religion into this, just look at it for what it is. A nice simple request. Change your avatar, or not........it's your choice.:thumbup: John

I agree. No one is on their "holy high horse" here nor do I think anyone is throwing religous values around. I think if myself or another member made such a request then perhaps it would seem a bit silly, although I wouldn't have a problem there either. But since Porkerson is probably on his computer more than most to take care of our needs and concerns then it only stands to reason (IMHO) that such a request is not so unrealistic.

(Of course we all know that our cult of INFI is the true way.)

Now that everyone has changed their avatars the reason "to use them as "identifiers" goes out the window.
 
My .02 are this: We are part of bladeforums, and should accept and allow all of the rules that allowed in most of forums, including the jerkit smilie. It's there, we can all see it when we post something. With all due respect, I'm getting tired of all of the over-moderation in this forum.

I agree. People are so considerate and polite that maybe we could start our own religion or political party. Join the Shakers maybe as I hear they need members. Why? Because they do not allow sex of any stripe. Maybe we could do that
