I'm ready to give up on GEC.

it's not that i don't like gec knives, but it's the fact that the knives and certain patterns i'm interested in are impossible to find or buy. 72's, 33's, and the list goes on. acrylic seems to be around but the darker bone handles are no where to be found.

Cry me a river. Do you know how many I want that aren't currently available? Such is the nature of the beast.

Not sure exactly what you're looking for, but this vendor's site has a good selection of 72s, and some nice 33s at the moment.

Back when I had more money to spend on nice knives, I was blissfully ignorant of GEC. Now funds are more limited yet I discover GEC's every week that go on the "must have" list! :D

If they were super-plentiful they wouldn't be as special. You will find what you seek if you persist. Enjoy the ones you have and keep your eye peeled for the others you desire. That's the thrill of the hunt.

Remember you only have four pockets, so how many can you carry? lol I carry 2 at a time. I have 7 Northfields. Two of them seen tons of carry and two others see some carry, the other three not as much but occasional.

Patience is bitter, but its fruit is sweet :)
Eventualy,GEC will have another run of 72,with single clip and wood scales, and i will be ready :D

Unlike Case and some of the other large manufacturers, they don't have a standard product list that is pretty much always available. It can be up to a year or longer before they do a re-release of the same pattern, and even then the newer version will have some changes. You should view all GEC production runs like you'd view a "sprint run" from any other vendor. If you miss a pattern you like, you'll need to either shop for it used, or wait until it comes around again.

It can be annoying for someone late to the game, but makes for some fun collecting between the search for the right one on the secondary market, or the wait with anticipation for the next run. Sometimes while you are waiting for your desired pattern to come out again, they'll introduce something new that you hadn't even expected.

Just be patient, which I understand can be hard to do from personal experience. Or check the Exchange forum here frequently. You can pick up some great knives sometimes at a discount as other collectors' tastes or directions change. There's also a big auction site you can check out, or other knife forums' for-sale sections.

thanks for the pep talk gents. i needed it and i'm back on the gec ship.:p sometimes it just gets frustrating but i will persist! i shall never surrender!

Case has an overabundance of handle materials, GEC doesn't have enough. GEC doesn't offer enough stainless patterns, Case offers too much. We are fickle, and want to know why knife companies don't offer as much of one brand/pattern/steel/covers as they do others. The preceding is in reference to my own complaints. I have been looking for certain knives and haven't found them, or anyone will to part with them. Others, like a 72 lockback with micarta scales, just popped up on my radar and I pounced on it in the Exchange. It seems that some members get the drop on the good stuff when it comes out, and liquidate their collection when they see something else they like, freeing up some great obscure knives at great prices.

What I would do is get a gold membership and put a sig line of your want list, or a link to your want list on your sig line. Post your want list. Go to Knifeswapper, rma100, kniveshipfree and other member dealers on here, and ask them to keep an eye out for the knife you want. Email Chris at GEC, and voice your request for your knife in the handle material you want. They will not make one knife just for you, but they may make a small batch if enough people ask for it. Put the word out amongst the members here, someone is bound to have one.

Happy to hear it :)

I'm new to GEC's, discovering them in early June of this year while browsing through the forums and seeing the stunningly beautiful Northfield models. I'm 50 yrs old so I remember these classic old early 1900's patterns when they were what everyone carried. I hadn't carried one in years (I'd been carrying a Craftsman version of the Buck 110 for many years and an SAK however). Now since that first GEC - my #55 UN-X-LD - I've been head over heels in love with the outstanding quality and F/F of these knives. It requires great restraint to keep it to 7 GEC's believe me, but I try not to just accumulate numerous things just to have them. I carry and use my things to one degree or another, so I feel "bad" to neglect something and just let it sit in the safe.

The quest for The One goes on! :)

I hear ya, I passed on a GEC stainless #72 wharncliffe lockback with red bone covers and I've been kicking myself ever since. They've made them in carbon, but for that knife I'd prefer stainless. Such is the nature of our hobby, a lot of it is in the hunt, and GEC with their limited production is happy to provide that for us. :D

The #72 clip in plum bone is sweet, I have one that gets back pocket carry. Keep on looking you'll find one I'm sure.

it is especially tough when you see a great new GEC pattern seemingly every couple of weeks that everyone on the forums seems to be buying, and you feel like the only one who can't afford it, and you know everything but the glitter gold acrylic will be sold out by the time you have enough money for it. I just try to focus on what I really like, look out for the patterns coming up, and try to have enough patience to save up and pounce on the pattern that I really wanted that takes ages to produce. It was especially satisfying to get my abilene Stockman after waiting months for it to be made, I held out from buying the boy's knives that everyone likes so much, and the muskrat, so I could get this. It's great to have it in my pocket now. I will feel the same when the #9 comes out in January I guess :).

I've been buying GECs since the first knives were released in 2006. The bones always go quickly but don't give up. I have been lucky to find what I was looking for most of the time.

You sometimes have to preorder sight-unseen to get the combo you want. Several of the vendors who frequent the forum here offer preorder reservations.

:D:D:D Great list, Jon!!

I am always looking for one more, better knife. Along the way, I have found a rather large array of great ones which were never in my view before.
I never thought I'd ever carry an odd pruning knife as a daily pocket knife, which is shaped like a lazy "S", and named after a Scottish river valley.
And with imperfect Black Ebony to boot!!:D
It just shows you where an open mind will take you!!;)

Personally, I really like GECs way of doing shorter runs. It makes for lots of interesting patterns and combinations.

I really like Case, Queen, and am interested in Canal Street, but they don't offer the variety GEC does.

Exactly, GEC saw their niche in the market and went after it. Still the only company out there doing lots of hand work and short runs.
