I'm really interested in this.

I have 0 experience with any of these, but my dad has carried a Tinker (or a Super Tinker?) for the better part of a decade, and he does a lot of, well, tinkering, as he always has projects he is working on. It seems like a good candidate for a jack-of-all-trades kinda tool based on that anecdotal evidence.

On paper my favorite is the Alox Soldier/Pioneer but the Cadet is really more practical to carry. Plus, the Cadet's tools are easier to deploy.

Also, the farmer is really a better knife than the Pioneer because of the slight difference in size. It fits your hand better.

My choice is the Tinker as the best all around SAK for EDC. I prefer the larger 111mm size of the Adventurer however; it is just a big Tinker.
For the woods or extended hikes, I'm torn because I generally carry my Adventurer with the Leatherman Squirt. I think the Farmer is the better general choice in this setting. But I would again go with the larger size of the Trekker. All of these non-alox as the toothpick and tweezers come in real handy from time to time, especially the tweezers.

For few ounces of extra weight, I find the larger 111mm size more useful.

Models like the Swiss Champ are useful IF you are willing to carry the bulky thing. I'm not. But Sparkly has made me look into the Mini Champ as an option.

My rule... two layers for regular EDC and three if you want a couple of extra tools for woods duty.

Added: My choices reflect POCKET carry, not pouch or carry in a bag of some sort. Options change when your regular mode of carry is inside a bag of some sort.

I have two Vic's, a Recruit and an SD Classic. I carried the Recruit for years on my keyring but really only used the toothpick and a couple times the tweezers. Then it got promoted to my vest pocket for work when I'm around non-knife people when I got the SD CLassic and it now resides on my keyring.

However, after looking at all the different models I see that most are very similar and have mostly the same stuff. Scissors are handy, a nail file is useful, of course a blade but bottle/can opener I have never used, pretty well describes the SD. Then anything else, I can use the old Recruit or one of my big @$$ folders.

None of the above.

My choice for my main SAK over the past few decades has been the Wenger SI. I guess if I had to replace it, I'd go with a Victorinox pioneer. Enough tools to get through the normal day, not enough tools to make it too bulky. The Wenger SI has survived many downsizings in recent years as I have slowly disengaged myself and backed away from the whole knife thing. Like my gun collection, my knife collection has seen a huge downsize in the amount stuff I have accumulated. I am only keeping a couple SAK's and a couple of my trusty old slip joints like my Buck 301 stockman and Boker pen knife. I've got rid of a LOT of knives, but my Wenger SI is with me till the end.

The next favorite is the little classic SD. This may be the knife I carry the most because it's mounted on my keys, and I can't leave hime without it and my Fenix flashlight. Always have a sharp knife and flashlight on you. Doesn't have to be big, just sharp, as my old man always told me. The classic actually does most things I need a knife or in the course of a normal day in suburban America. The little SD tip deals with small Phillips screws, and the blade is just big enough to open my mail and cut jute twine for the tomato plants out back, break down cardboard boxes for recycle. The tweezers make a decent roach clip.

Of the listed, I love having a classic on my keychain at all times.
My personal favorite though is without a doubt the huntsman.

I carry the Cadet most, when I carry a SAK. It is the most practical pocket knife made. It has everything you need and nothing you don't. I will add that I have a Classic SD on my keyring, mostly for the toothpick and tweezers, and the scissors. The blade on the CSD never gets used.

I wish they Made a cadet with a scaled down pioneer awl! For me, that would come close to a perfect pocket knife. Everything you need with les bulk and weight than the SI/pioneer.:thumbsup::thumbsup:

Had my climber since i was a teenager .
I'm 42 now and apart from a broken spring in the scissors its as good as when it came out the box .
They're all great knives .
Must get myself an alox farmer .

As I mentioned earlier, I've carried the same Executive for 20 years now, and I sometimes pair it with a Spartan. But most of the time, I carry an Alox Pioneer instead of the Spartan. It pairs up with the Executive perfectly, as they complement each other in features. Each has something the other doesn't, and neither one takes up much space.

Another advantage of the Pioneer is its durability. There have been a couple instances where I pulled out my wallet (I carry my Pioneer next to my wallet) and accidentally pulled out the Pioneer, which fell and hit the hard floor. If it had been my (current) Spartan, it's likely a scale would have cracked or popped off. My older Spartan did have cellidor scales, but they seemed much sturdier than the cellidor on the current SAKs. My old Spartan only had a subtle crack on one scale from being dropped a couple times on cement. The newer ones feel thinner/more hollowed-out. IMO, that's less of an issue with smaller SAKs like the Classic or Executive, but more important with more standard-sized models.

I just found this 5.1 inch monster, and I really like it... Ranger Wood 55?? I didn't know it existed as I don't normally stay on top of what they release
I also love the walnut wood option, wow - I'll need to pick one up. Anyone own one?
