I started feeling quezzy yesterday at work and today I'm worse! I went to work this morning and started to feel bad again and I could't finnish out my shift! This is the first time I missed work in almost 5 years! I'm never sick and I'm not one to pay the doctor big bucks if I can get myself well(that is less $$ to have for khuks anyway!).
My symptoms are an upset stomach(like really mean buttrerflys in there) my upper body is sore and stiff, cold and hot flashes slight headach and the real nasty one, hershey squrts!!:barf: No vomiting yet but I feel like I might if I move around at all.

I did get a flu shot so I'm guessing it might be a virus.

If any of you know a trick to knock this thing out please let me know! I'll be gratefull for any help!

Sorry to post this. I thought If I could get any advice at all that I don't know of it could help me get well that much faster!!

Thanks for the time!

Chris,

It really sounds like the flu to me! Even with a shot (only covers one of hundreds of strains) you can still get it. ...

All you can do is ride the storm out and treat the symptoms. Tylonol for head and body aches. ... drink LOTS of water. ... stay in bed. ... and eat light foods (toast. ... soups. ... rice. ...).

You'll probably suffer for a week to two weeks. If you really start to fade (losing weight, high fever, etc. ...) get your butt to a doctor for a check up. Stay hydrated above all else.

*caveat emptor* I am not a doctor, but I did stay and a Holiday Inn Express once in another life :D

Hope you start feeling better soon.

Alan

I first encountered Immodium as a prescription med when I had radiation treatments. Cute, smart-alecky nurse said they were "Air Brake Tablets" - "They will really lock yo' a$$ up". They do, even in the over-the counter form. That, plus the rest of it, sounds as though you have eaten in an establishment where not everybody connected with the food prep has washed their hands. Pepto Bismol and another day or so of rest might get it done with, but (as ridiculous as this sounds) check your tummy color and the whites of your eyes. IF there is a yellow tint to either, get thee to a doctor. We've had several cases of hepatitus A in recent weeks, traced back to food service employees - one in a restaurant and another at a school.

...Ditto on the liquids! But remember it's not just water your loosing. So if you've got some Gatorade/Sports drink stuff around, use that (lots of SIPS! not gulps). With regards to the diarrhea, don't know if I'd want to stop that -your body may be trying to evacuate a bug the only way it knows how :D Above all, use common sense, if something still seems really wrong after an appropriate time of illness, get yourself to the Doc's.

Last (and thank goodness the only) time I experienced that full range of symptoms was in Cozumel after eating some unwashed tomatoes from the local market (can you say "stupid"? - I know I can
:o ). An entire bottle of Pepto Bismol, chugged, lots of fluids, and 24 hours of bed rest (when you aren't otherwise occupied:barf: ) may do the trick. If it persists or gets worse, see a doctor! Take it from a smart [sic] tightwad who spent twenty days in the hospital after misdiagnosing/ignoring a ruptured appendix in an effort to save money. Trust me, the thirty-six thousand dollars my insurance didn't pay would buy a lot of khuks!

Well, First ya get a gallon of Warm Mayonaise, two whole rhutebagas, one jar of pickled pigs feet, and some jell-o Devil's food instant pudding. Mix all ingredients. take outside and throw in trashcan. You should feel instantly better knowing that I wasn't going to make you eat that. Sorry. Couldn't help meself.

Seriously, though, It sounds like Wal hit the nail squarely on the head. I don't think it is a virus either. It could be a staph bacterial infection. ( Do check for Yellowness, by all means)

Vacation last year: Ate at a new itralian place in the North Ga. Mountains. Had a Campo-Basso Sandwich for dinner. As Lawrence Welk would say, "Wonnerful, Wonnerful!". 4am: I sit straight up in bed, and think to myself,"I'm not gonna make it!!!!!!! " By the time I dismount the porcelin honda, the sun was starting to rise and I could have read a book.

Longer story short: Didn't have necessary meds to get on it right away, so the infection settled in. 2 week later I went to the "Gut" doctor, and here is what he said: Staph bacteria can be on food serfaces in such a number as to cause the Squirts and not affect the freshness of the food. It normally manifests itself by rapidly exiting the building. One of the things he mentioned to me as well was Giardia ( mountaneous areas ). He wrote me the wonderful anti-biotic Rx and away I went. He had recently fell prey to staph on some salmon in a french restaurant. What he said do next time was to hit it hard with pepto right away for two/three days, and then go for something heavier if needed. That is what he did and he could have had any Rx drug available to treat his own problem. He said the Pepto bonds to the toxins and allows them to pass without doing further harm.

I had a chance encounter with a bad salad in chicago & his technique fixed my wagon!

Take my .02 for what it's worth. And don't play around with this stuff two long, You can become seriously dehydrated in a hurry. If needs be get your butt to the Doctors! (We'll forgive you if you do!)

Keep yourself hydrated. Salt (one level teaspoon or so?) and sugar (1 or two teaspoons?) dissolved in a glass of warm water should stay down and give you enough energy to pull on. Dilute it if it's too salty. Repeat as necessary, but don't overdo it to the point of puking it up. The idea is to hydrate and get energy, it's not a cure.

But, if you've been unable to consume anything nutritious (i.e., not even soup) for a day or two counting from when it started, or if the salt+sugar water and a couple or three hours sleep don't help, get yourself to a doctor ASAP. If you can't keep even the water down, get yourself to the doctor or an emergency room.

Y'all noticed that Chris hasn't posted in a while ...wonder what's got him occupied :D Seriously though, if he's lucky his wife will have just plain dragged his butt to the urgent-care facility. Stoic only goes so far when it's coming out both ends.

Skag,
Go to the store get"NIGHT & DAY "Contac, box will be Blue & Yellow! Follow the instructions, one blue at night, lets you sleep, no after effects in the morning(Nyquill sucks, makes you feel like you tied one on the night before)!Take the yellow during the day(no sleepy feeling)! This is the only stuff that really works!

And try to keep us posted. And get well -- we have enough old sickos here and don't need the kids joining in.

Ok I'm back. I just got up after sleeping for almost 16 hours! I finally got off the "porcelin honda" and just slept!
I feel much better today but I'm going to play it safe and just stay at home/in bed for the next day or two.

A BIG THANK YOU to all of you for playing "mom"! My mom was dealing with her own problems this time around and the wife was taking care of her parents small farm because they are both out of the state so I was left to brave this one myself. I will print this thread out so I can keep it handy for the next time around, there is some good stuff in it! I don't have any Gatorade around but I will try this next time if it works for you.
Irregular, The salt/suger water seems to be working, my stomach has no problem with it but the tast made it a little hard to go down! But hey it works!!:)

Thanks again all!!!:)

Glad to hear you're better :)

So far as I know Gatorade is essentially just water with salt and sugar and a bit of flavouring -- so the salt/sugar water should do about the same thing, though it's perhaps not as palatable.

cheers, B.

It might be good to be sick every once in awhile. It makes you appreciate your good health when you have it!!!

If you have your health you have everything and with out it nothing else really matters...mostly.

My theory is that it was food poisoning. :o

My only advice for diahrea is to wash you hands thouroughly ;)

The only place I ate out was at Taco Johns on Thursday night. Went to work on Friday and was ok. I bought some turkey to make some sandwhiches with and had one for lunch on Friday afternoon. I got sick on Saturday late AM. Do you think I should through out the turkey? Could it be the Tacos?

Chris, the bugz you get with food _usually_ hit within two to eight hours, and your own state of health can stave that off somewhat longer. Tacos are usually a little faster, due to the compounded accelerants

I've taken to staying away from sliced yard buzzard from the deli - packaged or "fresh". Too many variables. If I can broil it, OK. If someone else has handled it since it was cooked, no way.

If the turkey was that pre-sliced stuff sold in the little packages that they hang up for who-knows-how-long, i'd pitch it. Not uncommon for recalls on that stuff because of bacteria, especially the cheaper brands. Premium stuff like Boars Head brand is probably a safer bet, or something from the big pieces that the butcher slices up when you buy it. Don't have high surface area and long incubation time for bug-growing.

You could, of course eat more of the turkey to make CERTAIN.....Your decision:)
