I'm sick, lost my DPX HEST

I've been here a long time and from what I've seen, the number of knives that have come unclipped vastly outweighs the number of knives that have slid out of people's pockets.

Sure, but who do you think is more likely to complain on here, a guy who's Vic tinker slipped out of his pocket, or someone whose sebenza or dpx Hest came un clipped?

Yep. The only folders people carry unclipped in their pockets are Vic Tinkers and the like, all right.

For what it's worth, the more expensive the knife, the LESS likely I am to clip it to my pocket. Fortunately, I have neither the need to get to my knife in a hurry nor the desire to advertise to anyone that I'm carrying a knife. I do, however, have a desire to keep my knives (especially my more expensive knives) out of harm's way. YMMV.

Well thats a shame I hope you find your knife, my daughter lost her Hest folder on a field exercise at Ft Sill and was really upset about it. Never recovered it so some other soldier got a good knife if it was ever stumbled across.

Not saying that. It was an example.

Of course there are plenty of others, but the vast majority of more expensive folders are modern in design, and these usually have clips. I know for a fact that a large portion of the people included in your argument against pocket clips are part of the SAK crowd. And being that saks aren't all that expensive, they don't get as much attention when they are lost.

What pocket do you carry it in front or back. I used to carry in my back right pocket but the clip trashed every chair and seat I came in contact with so now my right front and I have never had a clip fail. I did have a dpx hest and the deep pocket clip did not have the best retention and slid a bit side to side in my pocket. Hope you find it.

Acknowledged. And you are correct, most pocket knives other than traditionals feature pocket clips. So clearly they're desired by a lot of knife owners. Just not by me. And I carry primarily moderns. :)

Whatever works for you man!

And I understand your point about clips in your pocket. That's why I carry IWB so there's even less chance of loosing it:thumbup:

Thank you, it was warm in Tucson last weekend so I had it in the right side pocket of my Cabella's shorts. I'm never lost one wearing there. But, it was my fault, I knew the clip was loose and should have put it in the pocket and closed it. Hey, I lost a Gerber MKII by sitting in the door gunners seat in a Slick and having the knife upside down on my LBE and a pair of Ray Bans by looking out the Bell Bubble chopper at the Grand Canyon. " Whoops," is part of my family motto.

That sucks man. Sorry to hear that. I had an experience like that, but with a cheaper Buck knife. It was clipped to my pants, I went walking in the desert, and never saw it again. I agree with some of the comments on here about keeping your blade in your pocket. Ever since that incident, I've taken my pocket clips off my carry knives and put them in my pocket, and I haven't lost one yet.

I make a habit of tightening my clips every so often. It seem some manufacturers clips bend easier than others. Just tightened my Brous Bionic moments ago. I've yet to lose one. Sorry for your loss. May the person who finds it fall in a hole and burn in hell.

Yeah, IWB is the only way i liked to carry modern folders too, and never lost one. It was because the knife was more concealed, not for the mentioned issue, but..
one time i've clipped my hest to the right front pocket, and that one time it got broken off by an encounter with a chair...
It was the first model, with holes in it.

I have had a clip pocket knife for so long it just ingrained as a habit. I have a really nice folding knife that I tried to carry in my pocket it about drove me made. Its like when I hurt my right hand and had to use the left one its just so foreign feeling and aggravating . When I wear cargo shorts a lot of times I use the back pocket and button the flap over it for added protection. I really hope you find it. I was out hunting one day and I brought a tomahawk my wife and kids gave me for my birthday. It some how slipped out of the loop on my pack. I spent all night tore up about it. The next day I spent 3 hours looking for it in a corn field and found it. I have never been so upset about losing something.

I recommend IWB because it's never failed me.

How exactly do you think carrying it loose in your pocket will prevent loss? Maybe if you never sit down, or you wear really tight pants

Deeper pockets or tighter fitting jeans, either or works fine. They're usually in my front left with my wallet. I do suspect clip vs unclipped is as preferential as tip up vs tip down. Switching just feels weird for a while, or forever, depending on the person.

Anyways I don't like clipped anymore because I can't feel when the clip snags on something and comes loose; IWB would solve that but I found it uncomfortable with some knives and pants. If you're going with clipped I'd say go IWB or nothing else.

Yeah, that sux my friend. Hopefully, it may turn up. Who knows.

While I've been fortunate not to lose a pocket clipped knife, a couple times I have snagged them on something.

I also tend to be sure my knife clips are kept pretty tight. Dad always told me it had to be tight to be good. Not sure he was speaking about knife clips, but I dunno. ;)

I had a small sebenza fall out of my pocket once when I was shouldering a backpack. Thankfully, I noticed that it happened, so picked it up. Now, I just carry it in my pocket without the clip. I'd hate to loose a $350 folder.

Was at work one day walking past a wall of orange plastic safety netting... Wouldn't you know the clip of my crkt work knife perfectly caught a piece of the plastic net as I brushed by (right rear pocket carry) and pulled the knife right outta my pocket. Didn't realize at first... Thought I felt something, looked and reached down and noticed my knife was gone. Took me about 30 seconds to see it clipped 3 feet up on the net. Bent the shit out of the clip too making it useless. Fixed it later that night. And wouldn't you know this happened for a second time a year later but on a hanging wheel liner. I still carry clipped in back right pocket because it's most convenient, but I would never carry an expensive knife in. Those are reserved for after work and weekends!

Hope you find your knife. Lost my keys to my house once in a similar way. Back tracked and actually found them. I was ecstatic, it does happen! I would venture a guess you lost in doing whatever you were doing the first time it fell out.

I guess I got lucky. The notion of carrying a knife clipped to my pants pocket never made sense to me, so I never got used to carrying my folders that way. And compared to the mobile phones I used to carry in my pocket until they got too smart (read "big"), carrying a folder unclipped in my pocket is no big deal . . . up to a point, of course.

For every testimonial about someone's knife slipping out of their pocket, there are a dozen testimonials about knives becoming unclipped. Denial is more than just a river in Africa. And an ounce of prevention is still worth more than a pound of cure.
