I'm thinking of getting a SOG Seal Pup Elite for camping...

If you like this style of knife and can bear to wait for it, Gerber is releasing a similar knife in collaboration with BearGrylls, lablling it a 'survival' knife. You can do a google-search or youtube for pre-release videos. You can pre-order the knife on Amazon for $60. It'll have a hammer pommel, firesteel, whistle, and some other features you may find to your liking. I encourage you to check it out. Ether way, I'm sure you'll be happy.

Will it also have a built in compass, bottle opener, sawback, sextant, and Bear Grylls Adventure Club Secret Decoder Ring? :D

Then why would you recommend it to someone looking for a camping knife?
I wouldn't and didn't. I just pointed out a couple strength/weakness considerations. The weaknesses are the reason I didn't buy the knife myself, (esp. considering the prices I've seen it at :barf:). But perhaps 'looks' is of greater value to the poster than actual camp utility, or maybe he's really only looking for a small fixed blade to play with, leaving major chores to a hatchet *shrug*.

I know it lacks the sawback, hope it has a bottle-opener, and my guess is that the sextant and decoder ring would have Chinese characters :D

But if the poster is stuck on the Seal Pup Elite (regardless of camp utility), it's a similar knife with more gizmos for less $, no?

I personally wouldn't go SOG, but i agree with you that if SOG, the Ranger is a better choice for the expressed purpose...
...although a bluegill with a mine strapped to it would be BADASS!!! Who would see THAT coming, huh? NO ONE!!!

a stealthy blue gill.thats what i always wanted.but id use a snapper. yellow tail..if used in the ocean it can up the ante on lobster prices...you know the supply vs demand theories.:D

I need to get me one of those to play with. So many knives...

I hear ya. For the dough this doesn't seem like a bad knife. Make a good
working knife. If it gets lost or messed up, at least your not out hundreds like some of these others.

For me 440C works fine. I'd prob. never know the difference Black version is only $5 bucks more. Does look sharp.

as far as i know the 440c rant was d/c'd and replaced with the D2 version, which can still be had for a similar price after online coupon codes. the 440c is hard to come by online anymore from my experience, i had to pick on up in person at a local retailer. and, to boot, it seems harder to find the drop point style, so i settled for the bowie. however, d2 may work just as well or better for what you're looking for! blade, handle, and overall feel is great...as is the high-quality leather sheath. only downfall is the belt loop on the sheath is VERY tight and the sheath rides high. should loosen up over time i imagine, and if you want to lower it on the hip you could always add a drop loop to the setup. good luck!

I concur on both the NW Ranger and the bluegill of death. :D Or better...slap mines on some of those crazy flyin' carp!

I got no problem with SOG, and the NW Ranger has a great "outdoors" blade shape and size. They even have a half guard on it. It looks great...until you get to that handle. Awful! Nonsense!

They were so close.

...If you're looking for a cool knife to play with... ...You can use it to...
...But... This is not... This is not...
But it is a really cool-looking knife that is both useful and light-weight. If you've got the money (or aren't the one buying it)... I doubt you'll be disappointed.
I didn't intend to spread confusion.:o
I mention what it potentially can/cannot be used for. Once that's understood (esp. limitations regarding 'camp' use), I doubt it'll disappoint elsewhere - that's what I meant. It'll probably hold up as well as a Mora, right? It might be more expensive and less comfortable, but it looks 'cooler' and feels good in the hand... So with it and a good hatchet, you're set! (albeit out more $ than might otherwise be the case) :)

OR buy a knife better suited to general camp use, one to perhaps replace the need for a hatchet?

My apologies for the confusion.
I hope aguotihead gets the point: Cool knife. Over-priced knife. NOT a 'camp' knife per-say... but functional in other areas, light-weight, and again 'cool'.

I'll be watching for those booby-trapped bluegill now... esp. once ice-fishing starts! Here in Madison, the capitol is located on an isthmus - easy pickin's for a school of terrorist-mined bluegill... I better warn the gov'nor:eek:

You are absolutely right. Discontinued in 440C. D2 now. But ... after an "exhaustive world wide search" I found a black one, in 440C, with drop point on Amazon ... I wasn't going to but .... It's being delivered between Sept. 21 - 24 (chuckle)

NOTE to board: do not set up your Amazon account with the "but it with one click" option, WAAAAAAY to easy to buy stuff.

I'm not a big SOG fella, but if you're wanting a SOG for a general camp knife, I'd go with the Northwest ranger. No weird blade features, Flat grind , plain styling, good slicer, easy to sharpen, holds a decent edge, inexpensive, well designed handle(full tang)
Lots of good features in well under $100 knife. The leather sheath is basic ,but works ok.. I don't like any other Sog's except that one.Non-black recommended.

I'll be honest, I just really like the way the Seal Pup looks.

And as for the tiger stripe, I dont know I like the look of it.

Why is everyone so harsh because someone else likes the look of a certain knife or coating just because they dont like it?

If you want something that just looks awesomely bad-*ss, then that that's cool. I'd say save up some more pennies and get yourself a Dark Ops or Myke Hawke Hellion.

Nobody was being "harsh." You said you

...need a great camping knife

A tiger striped, serrated Seal Pup ain't it. Unless you are "playing Rambo deep behind enemy lines" camping. Deep in the jungles of Wisconsin...licensed to kill elm saplings...surrounded by "charlie" (chipmunks)....

Don't forget the tiger-stripe face camo! :D

If you want something that looks cool to you...get whatever. We can't tell you what you think looks cool...can we?

If you want a tool to use while camping, and want a SOG...I suggest the NW Ranger.

I'd just skip it entirely and get a Vic Farmer and Mora.

At the end of the day brother, it's your knife, if you like it, get it.

JMHO, but I think most of the folks on here were just trying to help you
out, based on the criteria you originally posted (camping knife) and not for nothing, but a lot of these people have prob. forgotten more about knives than I'll ever know. They can really offer some good info.

Again, Just My Humble Opinion.

I actually have an "extra" Seal Pup Elite that I am looking to trade (on another BF forum). I have found that this knife, even with its "inferior" steel sharpens very easily and is a great general purpose knife.

Hey, those chipmunks ain't messin' around! The way they go darting across the rail-path, you just know they're gathering 'intel' for some major offensive strike... 'makes my hair stand on end! Dammit, now i gotta worry about the sunnys AND the chipmunks!!

There you go, agoutihead, connect with BrewCity59, see if it's an acceptable style, and you're all set! :) Or check out that Gerber i steered things toward earlier - you'll have to wait for it, but you'll get a firesteel and emergency whistle in the bargain. (I'll admit, I have a nostalgic preference for Gerber over SOG)
Honestly though, you may want to bide your time - you may find another 'cool'-looking knife that you just gotta have... and then another, and another!
I find that 'cool' knives will often suck more money from you and leave you less satisfied than if you just went after an affordable high-quality 'functional' knife. Keeping things simple will save you money and might also lead to greater satisfaction in the long run...

Then again, maybe not. *shrug* It's a free country... at least until the terrorist bluegill and guerrilla-chipmunks make their move...

I have a sog seal pup elite plain edge that I have been using for a hard use camping knife. So far I love it, and it's holding up great to the abuse.
