Guys who have Mac..... are they worth it? My pc crashed and I'm sick of viruses getting it every year or two. Talk me into or out of an iMac!

it is worth it man. i have a macbook. i have never gotten a virus on it and their customer service is second to none. once a key broke off my keyboard and i brought in my computer they had me fixed up in a jiffy.

I made the change in 2008. I am very happy with it. I replaced my laptop with a macbook as well.

Fewer entertainment software titles, but a nice platform.

Does it come with decent photo editing software? I have Photoshop now but can't afford to buy the mac version! Ouch......

I also use coreldraw.... That might not cost too much to switch.

yeah man you can do that kinda stuff, i think lunde is a photographer and he is running mac.

100% do it. You will be SO happy you did...
The extra cash is worth quality and lack of headache .
(Consider buying Apple Care if you are worried...)

Yeah... I have to agree with everyone else sofar. I was always a Windows guy and when the Intel macs came out (with the ability to install windows on- along side the mac OS) I figured I'd pick up the cheapest macbook and see how I liked it. Since then I have upgraded to a Unibody, aluminum macbook and it is the only computer I own now. If you do not mind spending a bit more, there really isn't any reason to not get one. Especially now that you can simply pop in a copy of Windows XP (and soon Windows 7) and boot directly into that if you want. I have XP installed on this laptop, but honestly can't remember the last time I booted up in windows... just havn't had a reason to. Hope that helps out a bit!

Does anyone know if my wife's pc notebook would be able to access the printer and internet through the mac??

I made the switch a few years back and will never go back to PC. Do it and have your life changed.

run faraway. The apple tax adds no value.

Hardware costs more, software costs more. It's no more secure, even Jobs recommends you run antivirus, scripts are just as capable of creating havoc and so on.

If you're a gamer or want high performance graphics cards, the mac is not the solution.

I'm a PC guy through and through. I'd never switch. Not unless someone game me a nice Macbook for free. I can't live without the versatility of PC hardware.

If you're getting so many viruses maybe you need to reexamine your virus scanner / online browsing + downloading habits?

I run Windows without a virus scanner and viruses are a rarity. Just be smart about what you're doing online.

Edit: Also what phatch said above - the costs associated with owning / using a mac is ridiculous. That's the cost of being trendy, not the cost of having a "better" computer.

My brother talked me into buying a Mac about two years ago. After all this time, I'm still on the fence about it. I used to consider myself pretty good on a computer, but feel that I have lost a lot of my skills since getting a Mac. A Mac is so intuitive it is almost scary. In my experience there are no drivers that you need to worry about, control-alt-delete is a thing of the past, and as has already been mentioned viruses are of little concern. Another nice thing is that it comes with the majority of the software you will need. The only thing I have bought is Microsoft Office.

The downside is that most of the software is completely new to me so I don't have the first clue how to use it. I only know a few people who have Macs, so its hard to get someone to help me when I am having problems. I find myself using my computer at home less than I used to because I don't really know how to use it. For some things its easier to take my task to work and get it done on a PC than to fiddle with the Mac trying to figure it out.

I thought I saw something posted here on the Busse sub-forum about a photobucket virus. I don't use that service so I'm not sure.

Just keep in mind while Macs are less prone to virus attacks than PC's they aren't virus proof. It's just less common.

Edit: Idaho Jarhead makes a very good point. While Macs are very intuitive and easy to use for beginners there is a certain learning curve for PC users.

What many people don't know is that mac can run almost every pc system out there. My wife is an artist, and she wanted mac for the "creative" side of things, but I was hard headed in adapting to it. It does take a little getting used to, it's super easy, and oh so headache free! For example, I purchased my macbook in 2006, and my hard drive crashed in 2009, oh crap time, right? Nope! I took it in to my local apple store and they not only replaced the hard drive for free (this model had some problems apparently), but also upgraded my whole system for free as well. This was without ANY WARRANTEE! As much as I loved my mac before, this was the lynch pin...service is second to none, and not by someone in a phone bank half ways around the world. Worth the extra money? Hands down yes! Good luck!

Not to get into any debate here (because, lets face it... its pretty futile)- but when considering both sides, most people base their opinions primarily on the software. Make sure to take into consideration the the sometimes subtle hardware features as well. For example... one of the biggest problems I had with windows based laptops (Dell, Sony) is the power connector would always get jacked up so it had to be taped in order to work or in the case of the Dell, simply break inside the computer all together. On the macbooks, the power adapter is magnetic, so if it is pulled, bumped or ripped from the computer, it simply comes off and no harm done. Another example is the huge multi touch track pad that allows SO many finger gestures that save so much time navigating around the OS. And the unibody aluminum case... compaired to plastic laptop cases, they are tanks. Those are just three examples, but it is that type of hardware and attention to detail that really sets them apart- for me anyway. If there are newer Windows based machines that have those features now, someone point me in their direction, I am still interested in what else is out there. Bottom line is that if you are a gamer or a network tech, stay away. If you are a general user, they can't be beat.

Not sure what extra costs come with MAC. I paid less for my macbook than the Dell I owned before and it is twice the computer. Plus I can run Windows in a window on my mac and it runs better than it did on my pc. Macs can get viruses just like pcs but the idiots that write the viruses target pcs because most corporations use them.

The best thing you can do is go try it for yourself. You will get a mix of opinions it appears.
