iMac users? My PC PUKED and I'm thinking Mac

The price for the mac was $1850 compared to $850 for the ASUS. The ASUS has a multitouch track pad (not glass) and an LED backlit screen. The rest is cosmetic, and if you ask me, the usability of the keyboard is much greater on the ASUS. This is also an old model of ASUS, Apple always lags behind on the latest hardware. I hear rumors that they are getting the new chips soon.

If you want and idiot proof machine, only want to do basic computer things, and have pleanty of money laying around, then Macs are great. Macs are also great for high level audio and video editing, but PC's do a pretty damn good job of that as well.

I use my computer for many more things than that, and I like to work to get the most out of my tools. This is why I run custom PC's and build custom firearms. This is why Macs aren't for me.

I just have a hard time figuring out why people are so willing to pay so much for them.

You still don't get it. What makes you think a Mac will only let you do "basic computer things?" I have nothing but Macs at home and there's nothing I want to do that they can't do. I edit photos, make movies, e-mail, word processing, gaming, 3D cad, database design, play music, rip DVDs, rip CDs. What am I missing out on that I haven't noticed in the past 6 years? The only thing I can think of are the multitudinous headaches associated with MS Windows. And that's something I dearly love to miss.

I've mentioned this before, but CAD, GIS, and engineering modeling, the things I use to earn my money. Oh, and my pc does all of those things you mentioned, with more options on the software I get to use. Like I said, mac works fine, I just like the flexibility and customization of a PC, without a premium price tag. I use mostly open source programs.

I found the detailed specs on the macbooks and found them surprisingly large and heavy. I thought for sure they would be smaller. Not a big deal, It just wasn't what I expected. I guess you have to get the airbooks for small and light.

That's about it.

Macs are "PC's". . . I don't buy into image marketing.

If you are getting infections on your computer, you are doing something wrong. Macs are no more immune to viruses than windows machines, they simply have a tiny market share, and there are less people writing malicious software for them.

Where DO you get this stuff? Microsoft's website? There are currently no known viruses for Macs - period. How many tens of thousands of viruses are roaming around out there for PCs ... er I mean Windows machines? It's not that Macs are less of a target ... for decades Apple has been gloating about their "imperviousness" to viruses - they're definitely a target. If "you" want to become infamous for writing a virus, write one for a Mac, not a PC. Telling the world there's another Windows virus is like saying: "it's raining in Seattle ..." - i.e. not newsworthy. OS X's backbone is UNIX-based, which is much more robust than Windows, this is why there are no viruses. Windows is like swiss cheese. Why do you think banks and large corporations use UNIX for their servers? Would you want your bank to run Windows servers? In the seven years I've been running OS X [personally and professionally], I've never caught or even heard of a OS X virus with absolutely no 3rd party anti-virus software running. That's not to say it's not going to happen, but it hasn't yet.

Mac OS is less secure than windows, doubly so since most mac users don't use AV software and Apple ships with firewall turned off.

That just proves how much better OS X is. It doesn't require bloatware to be more secure than Windows is even with the performance sucking, money grabbing AV software running. LOL! :D

Translation: you can't refute any of the arguments or information you dismiss as garbage.

No, it means there isn't a single credible statement on the entire page. It's like arguing with an idiot, a lost cause because there is no hope of educating the fool.

Actually, my computer came with a clean install, no bloatware. Mac OS, on the other hand has bloatware.

I couldn't have said it better myself. But I am not talking about that page (which has numerous salient points.)

Not one of those comments have any depth - none. There's not one solid argument there.

1, 13: It just works - yes it does ... when I buy a new printer, I plug it in. On a PC you have to install drivers etc etc. I have never had to install a driver for anything ... including the aftermarket graphics card I installed. Garbage.

2, 8, 10, 11, 12 - Who cares, iLife is FREE software with your new Mac. And it's pretty awesome free software. I don't even run it. If you want, pro level stuff: Aperture, Final Cut, Soundtrack ... etc ... there's a ton of industry standard apps available.

6: who cares ... it's marketing

5: so what ... Windows was a rip-off of Apple OS in the 80s and Apple ripped it off from Xerox ... Widgets - they came into existence like 4 years ago? Microsoft dropped the ball, Win 7 is the first decent release since 2001.

4: "Systematic, a leading computer security provider, states that OS X is less secure than Windows XP" - of course they're going to say that, they've founded their business on computer security. Computer savvy people know what they need to do to keep their computers clean ... Macs are more secure, especially for people that aren't computer savvy.

3: Whaaaat. Is this guy smoking crack. Sure, an iMac's upgrade path is limited, but there are a zillion PCs in the same boat. The MacPro can be easily upgraded. Even if people wanted to upgrade their laptops - how many do? Lackluster performance - WTF ... 64 bit, 8 core MacPros capable of 64+ GBs of RAM - yeah they're really slow. Windows XP's 3 GB RAM max - now that's lackluster. Even my 5 yo PowerMac can run 16GB of RAM. He's is right about one thing, Macs do have "amazing exterior design" ... and interior design too.

The rest of the crap he digs up has no bearing on my life at all ...

We don't have your cookies, so we can't see into your cart. But anyway, a few differences are the unibody construction, 7-hour battery life, slot drive vs. tray, large glass multi-touch track pad, LED backlit screen. These things all add up to a nicer user experience and more money. There's nothing wrong with the ACER though, if you're looking for a decent Windows machine. I just don't quite agree that these are equal quality/featured machines.

Acer is garbage, I think you mean ASUS?

PLus, why would you like a slot load drive more than a tray? Trays have the advantage of playing mini dvds and whatnot.

Just curious if there is an advantage.

You guys all need to calm down.

Maybe this should be moved to wine and cheese so we can all say what is REALLY on our minds? ;)

Ew. I just noticed my gold membership expired.
