Impressions on Shipping-UPS, FedEx, USPS, etc.

The Deacon said:
Fedex ... almost returned a package to Spain claiming they could not find my address. Apparently nobody in the local FEDEX office had ever seen a European style 1 and it never dawned on them that the same character appeared in the area code and zip code.

When I was a new clerk in the Post Office, a favorite assignment was working Air Mail. I had people bringing me mail in every alphabet but Roman. I couldn't read all of them but at least I could direct the outgoing letters to the right countries.

I taught a lot of clerks to write a 7 with a bar across the upright to distinguish it from the Euro 1.

You know through the years I guess I've shipped and received about as many packages as anyone on this board. 99% have been USPS both directions. In a time from about 2004 or so I have not had one package lost by USPS (some were delayed by pilot error, wrong zip codes, addresses etc). I think that's pretty good record so I'm always rather amazed at the horror stories here concerning USPS. They get an A+ from me. UPS and FedEx , on the other hand, while good, are not up to the standard USPS has set WITH ME. Your mileage will most probably vary.

We ship just about 99.9% of our orders via USPS with the bulk being First Class Mail, and have done so for the past five years or so, if not longer. Anything over 15.9 oz we upgrade to Priority Mail because of the weight restrictions for First Class Mail. The lost rate is extremely low, if at all and the average delivery times for First Class Mail is 3-4 days, and Priority Mail is 2-3 days. For the cost and delivery times this is a tremendous value for a businesses, and our customers are extremely happy as well. We reduce the chances of anything getting lost by address verification within the shipping system we use. Overall very happy with USPS. Both UPS and FedEx just cost too much to offer free shipping, and there are too many variables as well that affect the cost.
