In case anyone wonders how sharp Bryan Breeden's knives are !!!

I cut the tip of my right thumb clean off when I was about 15. Cleaned it, put peroxide on it and bandaged it. No infection and my thumb is only a tiny bit shorter than the other one.

We usually have nurse practitioners and docs on our whitewater trips, but most people pack a veterinary disposable stapler for incidents. Much easier to apply than stitches, much less painful, and less serious consequences if applied wrong. It makes sense if you have someone with medical training with you, to pack a suture kit. They're so small and weightless, why not? For the layman, there's always butterfly stitches and sports tape.

In case ya didn't catch my other posts.......this cut definitely should have been stitched, but I chose to treat it myself and covered it with Cayenne pepper and wrapped it up. The pic below is a good pic as it does sometimes look worse ( Keeps opening up when I make a fist ) but does show how quickly the pepper helps it cleanly heal ........

I have almost the exact same cut in the opposite direction on my left index right now. Tapped myself with a hatchet making kindling sticks, felt it hit the bone. Should have been wearing gloves but owell.

Hey Pit
I have had St Johns industrial level III first aid for 12 yrs before it expired a few yrs ago

To keep wounds on the underside of fingers from opening just using steri-strips etc.
After dressing the wound keep the finger(s) in a neutral curved position take a long strip of tape and adhere it to your fingertip down to the middle of your palm, then anchor with a strip from the top of your hand and across your palmtape to the topside opposite to anchor it so palm sweat does not make it slip.
Make sure to not completely encircle the palm, leave an inch or two of skin exposed on the top of hand for blood flow and hand expansion on use.

This tape splint will keep you from flexing straight and opening the cut. If you put a strip topside from first digit to middle of hand it will keep you from closing tightly and opening the cut as well.

I have used this many times to get a deep one healing fast without reopening at work and in the field. Just heed the tug's of the tape splint and don't put your hand into full flexion or extension.

Make sure to use 3M micropore tape, replace the old cotton nonbreathable junk, the micropore can be easily torn into tiny steri-strips and any shape you want along the perforations. Lets sweat evaporate very well and comes in 1/2 in to 2in wide rolls. Great stuff!!!

I slid up on my Helle Lapplander cleaning salmon in Sept and cut my trigger finger very deeply, I could see the tendon sheath and some bone. Steri strips and tape splints for a week to 10 days and healed up nicely. Could have easily used 4 to 6 stitches, it was an inch wide starting to curve to the top of the finger. Worst self inflicted cut ever for me, got lucky with the tendons and nerves for sure. Other than knee surgery I have never had stitches.

I had 2 more salmon to clean so at first I just put pressure/gauze/tape and a rubber glove and started cutting. When the fingers of my glove were full and squishy quickly I realized how bad it was, had to be 3oz of blood in it when I peeled it off. Doctoring a bad cut at 11:00 at night 6 beers in is not fun.

Regards Pitt and interested in your 1 knife for the year updates

I have a couple coming from Bryan and consider myself forewarned ;)

If you forgo Dr. visit, WATCH for infection or loss of sensitivity. I had a buddy damn near lose his finger from a small cut he got spreading wood mulch. Got some nasty bacteria in it form the mulch. Dr. had to split his finger and swab it out daily plus some strong antibiotics. He kept the finger and learned a bit about taking care of cuts.

Yes I am a bit more cautious about hygiene while outdoor romping. I was digging in my ear after a metal detecting round and quite grubby. I managed to get a raging ear infection from my dirty fingers. I watch out now. Hand sanitizer in the car.

Hi all,

Well my wife kathy just found out a again. This one is the worse she has had so far since I started making knives.
I did not think about getting the camera I wanted to get the Cayenne Pepper on it. But as soon as it quits bleeding I will get the pic of the slice.

Cuts are just a part of life when using knives as we all know, but it still stinks to get cut lol.

WOW! That's a bad one Bryan - i hope she's OK.

Was there any tendon damage? It's on the side of her finger so she may have missed it/them, but hard to tell particularly so near to the joint.

Looks like a definite "stitch" candidate!!! Got yer sewing kit handy?!?

Keep us posted!

Ouch! I haven't had a really good cut in a few years. Maybe I need to send my Breeden DeWeese back for a sharpening! Yeah, I'd suggest getting a doc to look at it if you haven't already. One that big can get infected pretty easily and it is in a flex spot that will be hard to keep closed while healing.

Hi all, thanks for the comments and the advice.
Here is what it looks like this morning.

it is healing up some. The C. Pepper did a great job on getting the blood to stop comming out.
Now she has it all cleaned up and has salve and bandaid on it. Now the healing begins.

Wow, that was a bad one. Hope she is ok. It looks more better now but she may still want to see a doctor.

Hi all, kathy can be a bit bull headed she did not go to see the Doc. but I think if it had been any worse she might have lol. It is hard to say. Her cut really looks better today.
