In life or death situation which Becker would you choose?

Several cops will tell you that they fear a criminal with a knife more than a gun, simply because a frenzied attack is almost impossible to walk away from unscathed. The fbi did a study a while back that proved someone with a knife can close the gap from 15 feet away and still get in 2 or 3 stabs/slashes before the officer can even draw his sidearm and get a single shot off. Coupled with statistics like most shootouts happen between 20 and 30 feet and only 1/10th of fired rounds hit their target, knives can be horrifying in confrontational situations. Watch one of those lame cold steel vids where they hack apart sides of beef and pigs, and imagine for a second that scale of damage on a person. Terrifying. Some say the general rule is, the less skill/experience = the bigger the blade should be. Like Rwanda in the 90's, countless people with AK-47's were killed by maniacs armed with only machetes.

That being said, I agree with everything posted so far, I'm not trying to start any kind of debate at all, just repeating some crap I've read. Marc (the animal) mcyoung is a reliable authority on the subject, he's been stabbed and cut probably more than any other living person.

If my shotgun was not an option, I'd go for bigger like the bk9, machax, or patrol machete simply because I have zero knife fighting skills and I could just swing it around intuitively and still do some real damage. I know that someone with any real skill could cut me up like lunch meat with a 2" pocket knife, so I'm not saying bigger is better at all.
Honestly tho, picture someone swinging a sharp bk9 around, there's no way you won't get cut, badly. Check out the Krav Maga knife "experts" they smear lipstick on rubber knives and still get cut against complete amateurs when training and they're supposedly experts.

Ok I'll shut up, sorry for the rant. Check out Marc mcyoung if anyone is interested in this kinda stuff.

Let's all hope that none of us ever face a bladed confrontation, it would really really suck.

Life or death doesnt specify Combat.

For an overall tool, the RBK is well exceptional. Chopper, Machete, Survival blade. It would also work very well for combat. (If you know how to use a Kukri)
For a Sere type knife, BK2.
For a straight up knife fighting knife, man the 5 or 15 no doubt.
For a little bit of everything knife BK9. Reach, Good Survival knife, Chopper, Fighter. Not the winner in any of those categories compared to some of the other Beckers, but damn good at all of them.

If I can take an axe..... Then I would have to say the 15 or the 5 and an axe, allllll day.

I read the question to assume the absence of a firearm and limits options to a knife - a Becker Knife specifically.

In that very narrow (and unlikely) scenario, I would go with a BK-5 if protecting from people and a BK-9 if from anything else, to include lack of shelter, etc.

Maybe with a clip point mod perhaps if the .50AE misses.....

Since I have absolutely zero desire to engage in fighting with a knife and the OP DID say something like "keep your family safe" I'd go with the Machax or the King. Easy to keep your family safe with a big chopper to make hideouts for them ;). I like the Machax for it's versatility, and mine, if I had to swing it at someone, is pretty pointy:

If I knew ANYTHING about CQC, or was maybe cornered, I might want my 7. Definitely has the look of a knife that knows what it's doing - even with a purple sheath ;):

Taking care of your family when the SHTF will probably require a lot more than threatening or fighting, tho....and if I grab my 9, the 16 is attached (so is the tin with the stuff)....so even though that might sound like cheating, that's what I would end up with if I only grabbed one. Seriously, tho....we all know this is purely hypothetical. I don't think ANYONE here couldn't lay their hands on at least a half dozen blades if they had to run for it. Hell, I've got that many in my work truck (prolly more...) daily. BK24, modded 11, DPx H.E.S.T., Mora, couple folders, sometimes a 15, My T.M. Hunt Magua.....actually the only thing I'd be lacking (unless I was at home) would be something LARGE. I'm just hoping when the SHTF, I'm behind the fan.....

That 7 is awesome!! And yes, I'd run like hell if you pulled that thing on me.

I love that mod, did you do it yourself?

One more post try:

You never know when you will beat tacked with a seatbelt....

NICE work man! Love the bottle opener.

Killer job on the scales too.

Dammit, looks like I have to buy a 7 now.

Good luck! That was a metric shit-ton of work. Had a BF member contact me about doing one for him and I basically told him he couldn't afford it. Neither could I. Not that the end product wasn't TOTALLY worth it....it was just to see if I could. That, and I never really cleaved to the 7's zeitgeist, IYKWIM. Now I love it.

my pre-camillus era MachAx is the thing i'd want with me everywhere. great knife.

quite a few other knives i'd not mind having...

but don't bring a knife to a gun fight. bring several knives, a sword or three, and a few guns too. also: cheat :D

+1 on the machax.

your opponent would pee and poop as soon as you unsheathed it. If he was still dumb enough to attack, you could use it to chop some trees and make him a casket. Then use it to dig a hole to bury him in. It would probably still push cut paper after all that too.

always use proper tool

for hole, use backhoe

always have a couple holes ready

bodies just drop in...

It's fun that this turned into a bladed combat thread.

Even with years of martial arts, judo goshin jitsu defense, our sensei's own knife system which I respect the most, Tomiki Aikido tanto randori (competition knife attack and defense) and training directly under hapkido grandmaster James McMurray (one of the top M.A. weapons experts in this country) in his personal knife system of attack and defense along with countless other hours of training...

I'd still choose to defend myself with two open hands, if needed, rather than get in some form of knife duel because control of the bladed weapon is my NUMBER ONE concern, with both hands preferably and tight body to body positioning to minimize damage.

I know what I'm doing on both ends of a knife and the idea of a bladed attack brings great fear to me, I have no desire to get into a knife fight, only control the weapon and hopefully control the damage without losing too much.

Just one hit from a knife to the hands and your missing finger flesh, maybe completely losing hand mobility before even beginning to try to defend yourself. Imagine controlling that scenario?

Who knows, you become a knifemaker yet, or at least professional modder. Your projects come out really good man 👍
