I can't say much, except that he will be missed by many. Jim has shed much wisdom, humor and kindness upon us. I wish I could have gotten to know him. I read many of his threads, and have only gained knowledge. My deepest condolences to the Matis family. I know hes grinding away and making something really cool.

Take care-

I am overwhelmed, to say the least. I haven't been on the forums for at least a week, and decided I needed to catch up (since I am usually a daily visitor). I just can't believe this. James was my favorite moderator because he was always so "moderate" and full of knowledge. The forums will go on, but will not be the same. I was even more saddened to see that he passed away on my birthday.

My condolences to his family, for I know that your lives will not be the same. I also know that James is in a better place that we are, and that all people bound by love are bound eternally.

Peace to the Mattis family.

I met James for the first time at Blade Show
West. He spoke to me as if he knew me well.

I found myself at his table over and over again. I was drawn to it, because I just wanted to hear what he was saying and ask him questions, because I felt comfortable doing so.

It seemed as if he wasn't there to sell knives, but because he loved knives and all of the people that shared that sentiment.

He left a lasting impression of the genuine person that he was.

He will be missed ever so much.

Eric.

An on-line friend.
A gentlemen I knew about, but never met face to face.
A brother lost, but certainly not forgotten.

In my heart and prayers.
God Bless you and enjoy the embrace for time eternal.

Like many here I knew Mr. Mattis only through the forums, first Benchmade's and then this one. He was a gentleperson, always kind with never a harsh word - just the opposite in fact.

I saw him in passing at the last Blade show but didn't realize it was him until the moment was gone. Thinking I could introduce myself at the '01 show because I knew he'd be there, I kept going. I regretted then my decision not to take the time to meet him. I regret ever so much more now.

A wise man is gone from us.

We will miss you James K. Mattis.

James,
I will miss
your knowledge and patience;
your sense of humor and gentle manner;
the conversations of the libertarian and an anarchist - common ground found under a bleeding heart.
Gone too soon.

Come on people, only 300 replies in this thread and there are over 7700 people registered on bladeforums!!! This thread should be way past 600 or even 1000. James Mattis affected a lot more than just 300 people on the forums, speak up folks, this was a great man we're talking about here.

Thanks Jim! In a very short order you became a friend and a mentor. The world is truly diminished by your passing.

The loss of James Mattis is the worst news I have heard in a long time. I valued his humor, his insight and his gentle moderation. He will be missed.

Jim will be missed greatly.

I have used many of his arguments and conclusions in my dealings with the california state legislature. He had such a wealth of information and presented it in a clear and understandable way.

He was at that first dinner in Vegas where the foundation was laid for AKTI. He made every meeting. He always let me know when I needed to jump into a thread.

He was a tireless and devoted man. He was an ambassador for cutlery. He made us all look good.

Toni, time will dilute the grief and fan the warmth of memories built over a lifetime. My heart goes out to you and we will keep you in our prayers.

I haven't been posting here for too long but I was a lurker that read from this forum very often. Whenever I saw James K. Mattis as a poster I always opened and read what he had to say. He was always worth listening to in my humble opinion. I will miss his words.

Condolences to James' family and friends.

We have lost a member, moderator, gentleman, and philosopher. My heart is heavy.

James, thank you for being you and for showing us a special facet of life.

I haven't been on the forums in over 7 months, and i came back today. I had conversed with James over sharpening ideas and he always pointed me to the right place. He was humble and his humor was so witty. He will be missed by all...

Only one thing a man can take away with him when he dies, and that is his character.

When such character is taken away, it will be dearly missed by those that were touched by it. But it will never be missing, for it has planted its seed of good in the living. And it is trusted to us to see that we continue to cultivate and pass on our own character.

I am honored to have been in this man's prescence. He was the best among us.

The few contacts I had with James doesn't really give me any kind of right to comment what kind of human he was.

To me he was always worth my respect in every way

One of the finest people I ever had the pleasure of knowing, if only for a brief few years.

I knew Jim from the forums but also from the knife trade shows. We would share a subject knife with our respective digital cameras. He was always a gentleman and a gracious human being. He added a lot to the world of cutlery on the web. Let's all remember his kind and gentle ways and incorporate them a little more into ourselves. That's would be the best legacy for him.

I'm at a loss for words. Purchased a set of Spyderco kitchen knives for the wife from James on his recomendation and could not be happier.

You will be missed, our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.
