I am a big fan of the stockman pattern as it is very available as well as functional. However, rather than the usual 3.5in is size, I wish to have something larger for work, like roughly 4in or larger! What is out there? I know case makes a 4.25, but what other makers? Thanks.

If you can find a great eastern 81 you could stop looking for another imo.

Many German brands come in the roughly 4" size, like this Hen & Rooster #433 in stainless.

Queen's fine #9 is right at 4" and comes with excellent D2 steel.

Kabar #1108, 4"

GEC #53 pattern at 4⅛" can be found in either carbon or stainless

Queen's #49 is 4¼" and also comes in D2 steel.

Rough Rider #521 is a true jumbo stockman at 4⅜" closed with 440A stainless.

Moore Maker #5304 is another at 4⅜" closed, this one in burnt white bone and 1095. Shown here with the 4" Kabar,
you get some idea of just how big the 4⅜" stockman is.

Some of these are no longer made, but can be found pretty easily on the secondary markets.

The GEC 81 Abilene is awesome but if your on a budget you really can't do much better than a US made Schrade Oldtymer 8ot.

Rough Rider, as mentioned above, or the Buck 307 (if you can find one on the used market) or the Buck 301 or 371. I think Taylor-Schrade makes a stockman in the size you want, Colt and Marbles may make a large stockman, as well.

Here is a Case and a Queen Joe Pardue next to my peanut. Both are larger than Brett's 81, I mean my 81. Please disregard all the mineral oil, I keep them wet, but it looks like peppering.....

The large Case Stockman #6375 is a big sturdy pocket knife. The blades are stout and it's built to work.

An original Schrade Old Timer 858OT is the largest stockman that comes to mind. It was 4-5/8" closed with 1095 carbon steel blades. They haven't been made since 1986...

I need to add a commit here to help mark this thread as I am interested in this search.

I am interested in a large one also and would like to find a matching trapper with it.

I am new to stockman's but am really getting to like them.

Thanks for this thread.

If you get an Old Timer, original USA-made, there are many stockman and trapper variation choices, all available with matching "brown sawcut Delrin" handles.

The smooth chestnut bone is my favorite handle material from Case. Not sure if there's a stockman and trapper available with it, but it's worth checking.

another vote for the 81 Abilene Stockman,

the 82 Dixie Stockman is even bigger, with quite different blades.

...as an addition, I have owned to #81s, and neither had any blade rub - very rare for the pattern (not that that really matters in use or aesthetics anyway, but it says something about the craftsmanship of the GEC people).

Can someone post some pics comparing the case 6375 and gec 81. Side by sides would be awesome.

Thanks

Jim

My current favourite is my 82 Dixie.

Runner up is this Böker Germany in Apoloossa Bone. I prefer the round bolsters to the square on a big one.

Here's a GEC #81, a Case 6375 I got at a yard sale two days ago and a GEC Bull Buster (full size sodbuster) for comparison. It may not be a fair comparison because the Case has not been taken care of but it doesn't even come close to the quality of the #81.
