In need of a large stockman.

Before you give up on it, give it a thorough cleaning and oiling. Sometimes they're just a little gummed up.

I just came in from the mailbox with a Case 6375 SS with orange synthetic handles.

Looks great....until you close the blades. Only the sheepfoot blade has any real snap, the other two lazily click into place.

Although I don't have that model, your results are consistent with my experience, namely Case's inconsistent quality. :(

Most of the time it's a more fundamental problem, Case's tendency to round the corners of the blade tangs. :grumpy:

Warning, there may be a Texas Jack or two lurking in this photo of 4" Stockman pattern pocketknives. OH

It's been raining and humid as all get out today, so this is the best pic I could do of some of my stockman collection.
Except for a few mediums, these are all 3⅞" or bigger, and I've carried nearly all of them at least some.

That's an awful lot of stockmans from just one old hunter and one black mamba!:eek: VERY impressive, guys!:thumbup:
Jeff, I suppose those are just a few of your big ones, not a complete family portrait, right? :D

GT, the majority of mine are larger. Counting sowbellys and equal end cattle knives in with my serpentine stockmen, I've got 85 in all. 14 are 3¾" and shorter, while 71 are 3⅞" or longer. 47 of them are my collection of GEC #53 Cuban stockmen; I need 5 more to complete the set. Not good pics, but it's storming here and I had to use the flash.

I've got two of the Case 6375s - one in CV that I haven't carried yet, and another in SS that is my favorite "big" knife for weekend carry. Both of mine came with good walk and talk.

My other options in the large stockman category are the 4 1/8" GEC Dixie Stockman and the 4" Queen #9. Both of them are great knives with rounded bolsters, half-sunk joints, and low profile blades which make for a sleeker pocket carry.

But in general I carry the big Case because I got it for a good price so I don't mind if it gets banged up some.

If I were looking for a bargain I'd go with the Rough Rider. So far I have been impressed with their quality in a couple of smaller knives from that brand.

A massive shoutout to 556hunter for his generosity in passing along a Old Timer Lumberjack to get me started with the big stockman obsession. Cant thank him enough, a super generous member of this forum. Hope to take some in use pictures with it at work tomorrow and will attempt to post them. Thanks 556hunter!

That's a modern Old Timer from Taylor Brands, LLC. It was a special display knife they imported, an oversized reproduction of the 8OT. I believe they used the product model number "SC5" for those.

Sorry afishhunter .... I have been on the road for the past few days just opened up the forum today.
Yep Bob W is correct with the model number I have no idea where you might find one. This just popped up on the big auction site a couple of years ago and because my main collection centers on Stockman Pattern Knives I couldn't resist.:D

Very cool!! I think an OT Lumberjack ought to be big enough for anyone! :p Enjoy it, triggahappy, and thanks for sharing your good fortune with us!:thumbup:
Well-done, Ryan; "super generous member" seems like a very fitting description!!:cool:

Rough Rider, as mentioned above, or the Buck 307 (if you can find one on the used market) or the Buck 301 or 371. I think Taylor-Schrade makes a stockman in the size you want, Colt and Marbles may make a large stockman, as well.

My favorite XL stockman is the Buck 307, but even beyond that it is becoming my favorite knife. Seriously, I can't put it down. Out of a vast and jumbled accumulation of knives, the 307 has firmly secured its position as my favorite knife, and it will probably stay there for a while. I have others I really love, but this one beats them all out for space in my pocket most days.

Rough Rider/Colt/Marbles does make a few very nice looking XL stockmen, but I have yet to get any, surprisingly as my favorite pattern is the stockman. If they're anything like my current RR's then they're excellent knives.

All this being said, Taylor/Schrade does indeed make an 858OT. I don't have a Schrade USA 858, as when I looked for them on the Bay the prices were beyond what I was willing to pay just to try out a knife for curiosity's sake. Thusly, I ordered the Taylor/Schrade. After shipping it was right at $20 but it was on sale. It has a few flaws, but I'd still say its a very high-valued knife for the price, and I do like it. I'm not saying its better than a USA Schrade, but I am completely fine with not having the USA version. No carbon steel, but also no swinden keys. It holds an edge great and makes for a good user knife. I think its a very good knife if you don't want to spend the time and money finding a 307 but still like the saw cut delrin. Personally I think I'd rather a different handle material, but the saw cut texture of delrin is very grippy and it is a plastic so for a knife that gets used camping and doing heavier duty tasks it is probably better in the long run than bone or wood.

In summary, do what I did and get both! That way you can try out two affordable options and see what you like. Either one is a great choice for an inexpensive large stockman that looks good and works hard.

An original Schrade Old Timer 858OT is the largest stockman that comes to mind. It was 4-5/8" closed with 1095 carbon steel blades. They haven't been made since 1986...

You won't regret this knife. They can be found regularly on eBay.

Colt (new mfg. from the RR factory) makes a Texas Stockman that is 4⅞" closed, and has the same configuration as some Bucks,
with the sheepfoot at the odd end by itself. Comes in a variety of handles. I had one for a while, they're a beast.
