Recommendation? In need of recommendations

Parameters:

3 3/4-3 7/8” Closed
Clip Point/Lanny’s Clip
Lockback
Carbon Or Stainless (no “real” preference, but I have not been overly impressed with 1095 in this type of knife so far)

Uses:

Rope
Twine
Fruit
“General” Use
Plastic And Paper Bags (thick)

Let’s keep it under $500. I may process something small with it (think squirrel, bird, rabbit), but I usually have a fixed blade on me when hunting or just out in the woods.

This would be a front right pocket carry. I usually carry a Leatherman on my belt.

As an example: I have also come to learn over time that I prefer the thin profile of my GEC 72 over the thickness of, say, my Buck 112. I just do not like the play on GEC’s lockbacks, and the tendency for it to come back again over time. That said, I would not rule out a thicker knife in favor of durability. I do not have a brand preference necessarily, but I tend to gravitate toward USA made. With a good, solid knife, I wouldn’t call that a deal breaker though.

I appreciate your suggestions, I hope my parameters aren’t too vague.

Timothy La Combre could make you a knife custom to your preferences while staying in your price range. He's a small time South African knife maker, but his work looks pretty top notch to me (I've not handled them, mind you, but he posts enough photos and videos to see how good his work looks).

He has an instagram, facebook, and Etsy account if you want to check him out.

He makes some nice knives, I did a search to find his work. I didn’t find any lockpack patterns, but the slipjoints and fixed blades he makes look to be quite nice.

How about a buck 501? Custom options are available. About 3 3/4 closed.

If the 501 had a clip point, I would be all over it. I own two, but they just don’t hit the spot for me due to the drop point blade.

Almost all of the pictures are slipjoints, but I'm pretty sure he's done at least one lock back. If you like his designs you could always ask.

Given the limited options, a Moki may be your best bet. I have a small Moki lockback, the Serapis, and it's F&F is stunning.

The Kronos is quite handsome to my eye: what don't you like about it?

I suppose it had a little to do with the angle of the pictures I saw on websites. I have to admit, I like the looks of yours a lot more, which I believe is due to camera angle. The only thing I can really say about it in the negative, is that it looks to be too “pretty” to be an every day user. Pretty, meaning it doesn’t “look” like it would hold up over time, due to its size and “perceived” aesthetics. I could be entirely wrong though.

The Serapis is a small gentleman's knife but I have little doubt it would last a long time indeed as an edc. Perhaps one of the other folks on the thread can speak to the qualities of the Kronos, but I'd probably just get one shipped out to take a look at it. (May just do that myself.)

GEC 74 covers most of your parameters,if you can live with a slipjoint instead of a lockback.
Just my 2cents

A.G. Russell has a number of knives that would work-but almost everyone is 4.25” long or longer-except the Gunstock Railsplitter mentioned and this one:https://agrussell.com/knife/A-G-Russell-Pocket-Beak--RUS-CA13CO. I was recently told that the heat treat on the steel was very good, and that it wouldn’t take much work to get rid of the recurve, especially on the 3 5/8” model, on a stone. Slipstones or anything round you use to sharpen with can be used for recurves, or hawkbills, it just takes a few tries to get it to blend with the straight portions of the blade. Kind of a pain, imho, I was into recurves at one time:rolleyes:. Honestly, for the price of both knives, and your stated limitations, get them both and find a nice custom you like:D. Oh, you know SAKs are mighty handy, look at Swissbianco, they do special configurations, or patterns no longer produced. They definitely have models with a serrated blade, generally in addition to a plain edge.:) Good luck! I might post more as I think, I love doing these.:p
Thanks, Neal

That's nice looking, but I can't get too excited about the choice of steel (440a), although as Buck has shown with it's 420hc a good HT can go a long way. Do you have one yourself?

Thanks to BPP BP_ BP_ starting this thread I've got a newfound interest in smaller lockbacks.
Tom, I don't have one myself. Just enjoying the fun of trying to help BPP find something. I saw one particular youtube video that had some nice clear footage of the knife. Looks really nice in that video except that the Stag might be a little thick for BPP's preferences.

I think part of the fun is the adventure. I use my knives every day, for a variety of tasks, and always in search of that “perfect” knife. I’ve been exposed to brands, and knives, that were unknown before. I’ve also learned even more about what I prefer in a knife. There may well be one I haven’t found yet, then again that perfect one may be a custom. I enjoy the search nearly as much as I do the knife (and using it) itself.

i agree with you about the "search". have you looked at the GEC 72? i have one and like it. the other one i really like is the GEC 99 Farm & Field, but they can be hard to find, and they are not clip point (spear).

others have mentioned the 110LT. i just received one myself, but it is larger than you said you were looking for. i do like the 112 quite a bit. that is probably also just over your 3 7/8" closed length limit though. however, it would certainly fit under your budget. :D

nice thread. i am going to look closer at those Moki's.

I actually have a 72 Clip LB in my pocket today. Other days, I’ll carry the 110LT but it’s a bit too large for me (as mentioned and acknowledged). I suppose if the 72 was Stainless, long pull, and no GEC blade play, I would like it a lot better.

yes, it is true the GEC lb's get the blade play. i have had a 42 and 72 for a while now, and they are getting a bit "loose". i didn't catch the SS requirement. that obviously rules out the GEC's. Good luck!
