In praise of ebony: Traditional knives in the prince of wood

I'll play, here's a Norfolk from Jared Oeser. Super piece from a very talented artisan.

The subtle variances in Ebony grain is hard to capture in pictures, but you guys are doing a great job; my offering is a GEC #15 EO.

Lot of action in a thread that's only 6 hours old! If ebony is the prince of wood, I'm seeing a massive amount of royalty here!:thumbup:

This knife in particular had me on the verge of hyperventilation! :p I've known for some time that the jigged bone versions of these 2-bladed EO Scouts just stopped me in my tracks, but Old Hunter's offering has let me know that my obsession is independent of handle materials! :D

I think this is the only ebony I have, an EC Simmons Keen Kutter recently given me by Markesharp:

My piece of ebony is in the form of my small whittler/leather working knife that Tony Bose crafted for me, a shape that I sent him to build and he said 'no more like that' lol while it may not be something others would like, it's a constant companion at the workbench for me.

Nice sharp, small D2 blade, cuts great, ebony handle cradles in my hand nicely :)

Gary, I really like your carving knife! The curves really work together to create a working piece of art.

I've never been a big fan of ebony, yet somehow I've managed to pick up a few over the years.

There's something about Ebony on a knife that just sings! Based on the beautiful knives in this thread, looks like we've got ourselves a choir.

Here's one that I really enjoy, an old Boker Jack c. 1899-1920. As you can see, the wood has held up pretty well on this 100 yr old knife...even better than than the steel!

WOW! You guys are giving me palpitations here! Some absolutely breathtaking ebony

That is a rare bird Jack. Spearpoint AND Ebony? What a winner!

Thanks Tim, short run with the nail-nicks on opposing sides, a gift from Charlie, and my first Charlow, so a very special knife for me :)

That is one good looking user!

Certainly is! Great pic too

Surpratentorial - What a post to make a man cry out! All stunning, but the old ones could steal my heart away!

Great line-up Robin, have a wonderful Father's Day

Wow! That's really nice!

+1

That's a lovely knife

Very special Gary

Thank you. When I saw it, I had to have it.

I'm not surprised :)

I'm hoping this thread is going to run for a while
