in praise of military & tactical knives for the woods

They haven't gotten into higher-end steels because they are still able to sell knives with the older steels. When market pressures increase, I expect they'll spend the time and money to make the change. I'll be looking forward to that.

I love the blade shape. I knew Cold Steel made a version, didn't know Muela did. Now...if someone would just make a full tang version.

Hi all,

I love knives that have the Military look.
This blade and handle shape is one of my favorites.

Why doesn't SOG get into modern steels and keeps sticking to AUS-6 and AUS-8? Nothing wrong with those two, I own knives with both of them but... I think they could do better.

Mikel

IMHO they are over priced as it is, imagine their prices with better steel... :D

How about a Mission MPK? In A2 its the ugliest chunk of steel you've ever seen but it cuts like the proverbial razor. I've been thru a host of black bladed CS's..They cut when you ask them to. Or a Benchmade Nimravus(lifted by a GF LOL!). My son currently has my Boker Beluga..that a water rats godzilla gutter for sure! (and he outfished me today on top of it!! he got 4 and I got bupkis!!) PSST..Yall keep it a secret but I got him 1 of Bryan's SERE's on order..I CANT wait to see his face!!!

Right there with ya man, Becker, RAT, Spyderco, Benchmade, Ka-bar lov'em all.

One thing I want to pick up again, is a Benchmade Nimravus, absolutely loved that knife, Did some work to it, made it more of a woods knife and took away that gleem I liked it for.

And, some photo's. :D

I like a lot of the Cold Steels, I don't have them anymore but I didn't pass them on because I didn't like them. I really liked the ODA I had...but so did my brother...

How did you order the SERE ? You know...handle material and what have you.

No mention of the EK yet, cha... Eks are some of the best and most traditional combat fighting knives and do a superb job in the woods. I've also beat up Boker AF's and the AF issue SERE knife, which can do a decent job for a 30 dollar price tag (Camillus ones anyway).

The Trads & Bushcrafters might choke on their beers when they see this..... ;) :D

I've always liked military & tactical styled knives for civvie woods use. My SOG Tech Bowie, Gov-Tac, Seal Pup Elite, and my Emerson PUK and similar have never let me down. Tough, easily sharpened, aggressive styling all get a "Bushman5 "

I see a few people here in WS&S with military blades: 6shooter with his Gerber LMF, Mistwalker with his SOG Seal Team (and i do believe a SOG Team Leader Survivor) and numerous others.....

simply put, military knives like the ones above make fine shavings like a "bushcrafter" knife, they split wood like a "bushcrafter" knife, they do everything a "bushcraft" knife does, and have a great aggressive military styling.

YMMV as to knife design, but dont rule out these blades.:cool:

No offence but this looks like a Sog commercial! I have poor experience with SOG company and won't buy another one of their products. There are too many other good companies with better quality products and better customer service to shop SOG.

each to their own. I have never had any issues with their products or the company, nor am i a spokesman for Sog.

I know there has been some discussion about SOG quality.
But their fixed blades rock.

Bushman, you crazy fuzz stick makin fool :) that's gotta be a record for the fastest fuzz stick.

Good review, always liked tactical blades and have always liked the look of the SOG's but the AUS8 keeps holding me back. Got any comments that might change my mind?

yup, sharpen it with a DMT hone and then STROP it to remove the burr..........its wicked slicing steel. Fast sharpening.

(AUS8) its easy to field sharpen with sandpaper, leather hones or stones too.

Not too worried about sharpening I think I got that covered ;)

I've had good experiences with CS AUS8 and hear SOG also does a good HT, having a un-bias opinion do you feel the toughness and quality of the bowie is worth the price? If I were to get one it would be one of the bowie models, the design just speaks to me :)

The bowies are wonderful, the heat treament seems really good. Edge holging was much better then I expected.
However, if you have large hands, the Bowie 2.0 might not be your best choice.

Even the SEAL Pups, I was surprised at the durability of SOG's AUS8. The price is still unreasonably high considering the simple plastic handle and the steel, but the blade, like Bushman claims, takes a ridiculous slicing edge. Definitely more of a fighting knife than a bushcrafting knife, you will get much more durability for the money in other blades, but if pressed SOG's knives will get the job done when needed.
