In Search of the Best Busse

Well, to each his own. Me, I don't think I agree. You can read my review of a SHSHII in this thread. It lost to the SFNOLE. The handle material is very comfy, yes, but the ergonomics of the handle are rudimentary. Today's mag slabs swell the palm better, and the rounded grooves provide more grip contour. Your post leads me to a question though, did Jerry grind and make all those older knives DOL mentioned himself?
I personally am glad there people who feel like you do:D because that allows me to snag up the more & more of the knives Jerry hand ground himself Like the URGENT FURY:eek: made between 1982-1984 Jerrys first two years of full-time knife making not the ones being MASS produced and not made by him:eek:. when you look at other Custom knife makers work LILE, RANDALL ect,the ones that are highly sought after and do not EVER lose Value are the knives they made themself and not the ones made after there Death or being mass produced by there employees today!!!

I guess that's the benefit of a multi "taste" market....for me I find the LE version a bit too "busy" with all the writing on that side...the sterile D/C with black grips though would be "very" much better for me....my LE will need to be D/C for what I need.....got to agree though about the old classic's as well....whether or not done by Jerry...some of those designs that I have held are the best "balance and feel" of any I have tried...particularly the SHBM's...they are pretty much perfect.

Is there a list somewhere if which knives Jerry ground and made himself?

Jason--Considering you gave me my first lesson on SFNOs, you should be proud! You helped raise this Hog.

Now I'm worried a few of my knives are going to conspire in the middle of the night to head out to your place . I'm worried you may be allowing some of them to land here purposefully as message carriers of subversion, to talk to the others. I'll have to tighten security measures, and plant a spy.

I appreciate the kudos...but that don't make it hurt any less. :(

Now that's funny.:D

Love the rolling review thread BaconSlinger!

Oh wait... you really wanted the WASP didn't you?

:p :D

Well, we thought this competition was over for a while, but Jeremy had to go and send in another challenger. SFNOLE is not happy about it. Coming off a title fight, he was hoping to get at least a month's break, maybe even a year's worth of sitting on the beach enjoying the fruits of his labor. Now he hears he's got as heavyweight coming into to town who wants to see him right away.

I hear him talking to the other SFNOs, but I don't know what they're discussing. I suspect that LHFSH can hold it's own, but this is SFNO territory raght 'her. He better come in sharp!

Prepare for another bout.

errr....
don't understand:confused:

F5?

I'm on Mac.

and why? with the knife?....uh.

what is this hurry all about?!

:D:D:D

The F5 key is a page "refresh" command for Windows. You hit your F5 key with the knife and now it is inoperable. Just messing with you for the Ganzaa.

OK, I've been fondling the "LHFSH" Jeremy sent over for a few days now, so maybe it's time to put it up against the champ and do a full review. Keep in mind it's 2 a.m. and I'm sleep deprived and a little groggy, but I have nothing else to do, so here we go. Also keep in mind that these comparisons are not based on using the knife in the field, but purely on my own desk-jockey evaluation.

The customized HHFSH Jeremy sent over is a real beauty of a knife. It's hard to imagine a better user. Jeremy Horton is also a gentleman and friendly guy, so that certainly adds to the knife's appeal. Not only was the HHFSH (the Busse Co. logo knife) a great knife to begin with, but Jeremy has made it better in my opinion, and did a fantastic job on the process of modding it.

The knife feels very good in the hand with these magnum micarta slabs on what I think is the perfect thickness for a knife this size: .25" thick. Jeremy ground it down from .27". The balance is good for a light chopper. It sits blade forward. The spine of the knife is clearly very strong.

Jeremy did a really nice job on the blade finish, which in my opinion looks much better than a CG HHFSH. Satin is always sexier and classier than a coated blade, and this one rescues the HHFSH from looking normal. The finish he left on the primary bevel and flats is nice enough to look at, but also not so polished that it makes you not want to use it. This satin finish still seems to beg for use. On a knife like this, that's what you want.

Jeremy put a "lightsaber" polished convex edge on this sucker, and boy, is it sharp! Must be getting tips from Ban or something. It's hard to put a razor edge on a saber-ground knife this thick, but he manages to do it completely consistently up and down the entire length of the edge. That's really outstanding work and attention to detail right there! Most sharpening jobs have "soft" spots, parts along the edge where the edge is not as sharp as in other places. Not here, though, I can't find a single spot that is not razor sharp, from the base of the edge to the tip.

All in all this is a really great knife, made for chopping and camp use, and begging to see some action. How's it compare to the SFNO you might say? Well, you all know my preference for a lighter, smaller knife than the typical FSH. For most chores, and overall camp use, I don't need a knife this big or heavy, and if I was on a hike, I wouldn't want to lug it on my belt. Now if I needed to chop down some saplings, I'd grab this thing in a heartbeat, , but since we're going for the best overall Busse (for me), I'd say it's a bit big and heavy for full-time use.

The refinement, balance, and proportions of the SFNOLE still stand out, and it retains its title. What a great knife it is. Horton's "LHFSH" is a beast of a knife, very well-executed, and classy for a CG FSH. But for overall use and general purpose knife, I'm going with the SFNO.

Hmmmm, my favorite would have to be my euro mil overrun. Rec-C is so nice. Maybe I'm part rat? Sure hope not. Then again, I don't usually go around chopping a lot of wood so most people here favor a much larger knife. For pure fun I love my PDs. I've been wondering for a while when another tanto model will come out.
