In the absence of a Busse Kin folder, what do you guys pack for a pocket knife?

Only one way to find out. ;) Does that make me sound like a tough guy? ...I've been working on my tough guy bit. :D:D

Oh ya I would not ask twice ... but you need a cigar dangling when you say it :)

Spyderco. Sure, they're not as high end as many others but they are no where near as expensive either. Folders are fragile. Even the expensive ones get grit in the mechanism and can wear or come loose. I'm much more comfortable using a $150 Spyderco than a $450 Strider. A fixed blade (Busse) does the hard stuff. I also think Spyderco has the best value of any folder.

Chris.

If you are leaning toward a Strider, than just do it. I started with cheap folders, progressed to a Spyderco Military, then an Emerson Super CQC-7, then finally a Strider SMF. After the SMF I bought a Sebenza and then a Hinderer XM-18. The Sebenza and Hinderer are really nice knifes, but I haven't carried anything but the SMF since I got it. I haven't been able to justify the depreciation of use when the SMF already does everything I want.

There are only a few complaints with the factory Strider- the edge was too obtuse, so I reprofiled to 32 degrees inclusive. It made it a much better slicer, and I figure anything that would damage 32 degree S30V most likely would get handled by a Busse.

The other complaint is that the choil takes up a ton of blade space, and should have been smaller to allow a longer blade in the same size knife. But it works well for detail work choking up on it, and the geometry is excellent for a number of grips.

The Sebenza is nice but feels a bit "small" when I am used to large folders. It would be a great EDC piece and I am sure the large would be "just right" in size. The hollow grind I am sure makes it a great slicer.

I bought the Hinderer to see what the fuss is about. It is a really nice knife! But I dont think it is worth 2-3x the Strider. I would rate it about equal. If you are firefighter, police, active duty, etc, I would say go for a Hinderer because you could use it and resell at a profit if you don't like it. Otherwise, I say rock the SNG. In fact, I think if I had it all to do over, I would have bought a SNG CC, simply because it is a little smaller and would carry just a bit better.

A pic of the knifes mentioned:

Ever since I came across Great Eastern Cutlery I have been carrying some variation from them.

There is something about an unobtrusive pocket design that is light and packs plenty of blade length for EDC use.

1095 and now O-1 with a very good heat treat. I love cutters and these are that. Plus the price tags will seem like your buying a coke vs a Busse fixed blade.

I used to be a Sebenza EDC guy

I still feel the same about the Sebenza. The design is what draws me to it. I just find I can get away with the lighter, more efficient pocket friendly GEC's.

I carried a ZT301 for about a year and wish I still had it (sold it to buy the wife a Kindle) . However, I gave the Cold Steel Mini AK a try ( mainly because of all the positive things I read about the lock) and absolutely love it. Its a work horse and the ergos are great IMO. I know... It's not a high end folder but I have been very impressed with its performance and at a great price (was actually given to me by a fellow HOG). BTW - You guys have great tastes in folders.

Yes. PA, is a right to carry state. Can also open carry w/o permit under certain conditions.

As opposed to full custom, yes. Blades are cut elsewhere but finished & sharpened in house.

XM-24's... Top mid tech (AKA 'production') Spanto, Bottom full custom Slicer

I wear cargos. Seriously, many get pocketed but some are new and don't have a mission yet. This photo shows most of my user folders. I have a pile of older battle scarred folders, but they are not as easy to gather for a quick pic since they are scattered about in tool boxes, glove boxes, etc.

These 2 Hinderers see the most use by far. Bronze is a XM 24, Stonewashed is a Gen 4 XM 18 3.5.

Strider folders are very good knives. I suggest you buy from a reputable dealer or trusted forum contributor if you cannot examine your knife in person prior to purchase. I have never had an issue, but others have.
