But not in the market to spend $80+ on a tactical man-purse. Any suggestions on where to track one down? Any reviews of this thing? I liked the fit, but that was at the cop shop, totally unloaded...

One just went on the trade forums a day ago :(

I have 2 and love them. My perfect day pack.

I've had several butt packs and none of them had quite enough space. The DevilDog has the extra room I was looking for. It's also easily carried slung over the shoulder. Like other Maxpedition products, it's built tough. (I also have the Versipack Jumbo and various pouches/add-ons.)

Since it has been discontinued, you can find some good prices on it. I bought mine at LA Police Gear.

if you're really secure in your manhood go to mountainsmith.com and look at the bargain bin. they have, or had, a tour model which is a regular $70 for sale for $35, the down side it is basically pink. yeah i know, well i ordered one the other day and the service was great and it's a handy belt/sling pouch for when you want to carry a little. give it a look.

It looks like the Maxpedition company store has them for $53. That's a pretty good price.

I was going to say the same thing...it's a great bag and even better on sale:D It won't hold a water bladder (unless a real small one) and it won't hold a 15" laptop (tried), but it will hold enough toys for a day hike:D

That's a lot of heavy metal!

How does it carry on the waist with two full water bottles and all that hardware inside?

I haven't tried to use the shoulder strap in conjunction with the waist belt as added support. Have you?

It really wasn't that bad. We did a lot of bouldering, off-trail hiking and climbing and it was fine...in fact I probably could have added a few more pounds without any trouble. The shoulder strap needs some work. I wasn't wearing a shirt, so it was a little abrasive, but the majority of the weight was carried on the hips as a lumbar pack.

I scrambled up this, twice, to get all the gear...you can see my Devildog at the very top the first time I went down.

I never thought of using the waist belt AND the shoulder strap together.
Sounds like a great idea though & I'll give it a try.
Thanks for mentioning it.
I sometimes use mine instead of a daypack for roamin' around the woods.

There's plenty of room inside.

This probably weighs around 11 - 12 pounds with the 2 full canteens.

Overall it's a nice bag to use if you don't want to carry a daypack.

Funny I found this tonight. I am about ready to pull the trigger on one. Can anyone give a first hand comparison with the new sabercat?

I was looking at the sabercat as well but the reason I went with the devildog aside from the price was it could hold a couple of water bottles in the outside pockets made for them. The sabercat didn't look like it would take a water bottle. I say look because I don't have any first hand knowledge of the sabercat.

Just my 2 cents FWIW

I love the DevilDog (sort of a names sake as well - USMC). Mine doubles as a Daddy diaper bag. In the front pouch I carry a load of first aid gear. In the big pouch I carry diapers, wipes, sun screen, bug juice, snacks, water in both side pouches, kid's shades in the long skinny 'holes' beside the small front pouch, and I have a Maxpedition malice clip (like a carabiner) which acts as a ball cap holder. I must say I look  walking in the mall:p.

Works great in the woods too!!

The side pockets on the Sabrecat will easliy hold a 1L lexan bottle with a nested cup, but the zippers won't close over the top. I use the side compression strap to secure my bottle, but it's not the most elegant system.

Any pics of you guys wearing it to see how it "hangs?"

Hey Brian, don't make comments like that, my wife almost banned me from Bladeforums when I said I needed her to take a picture of me so this guy can see "how it hangs":D

I carried mine everyday for a week at Disney World. I tied a piece of paracord on the left side of the belt buckle and then ran the shoulder strap from my right hip pocket over my left shoulder and attached it to the paracord. It worked much better than the belt itself when loaded down. I think the waist belt is a bit low unless you are using a shoulder strap. My boss has used an H harness with his he says.

LOL! Oops! No matter what your rank, Rock, your wife will always outrank you.

I was wondering if the "strapette" accessory harness that Mountainsmith sells to help support their lumbar bag would fit the DevilDog... it's a little pricey at $25 but sounds like it might be just the ticket. I'm hoping to stumble onto something similar that's a little cheaper.
