In which Waynorth takes a D.I.P!

You've inspired me.

The participants, 2 MOP whittlers. One marked Camillus, broken master blade. The other marked Bostwick Braun, a Toledo wholesaler. The blades are a dead match. I've disassembled both, now to find the right pin stock!

3/32", no. 1/16", no. 5/64"? Remains to be seen. Don't even know where to get that one.

Pictures!! Pictures!!
Don't be shy!!:D

I'll get there. Can't promise much on pics, but hopefully soon I'll have a B-B whittler with one lonely Camillus-marked blade.

Now where to find stock that small...

With all of the fantastic makers on this forum, I feel silly jumping in, but...

If I don't have a good match for pin stock, I take the next larger size, chuck it up in the drill and file it down until I have the right diameter. It's always worked for me.

Charlie, I've read this thread over a couple of times and may have missed it but do you intend to install a shield on your upcoming masterpiece? I don't see where the liners are drilled for a pinned shield and that makes sense as they (GEC) wouldn't want to pin a 2nd.

Anyway, interesting thread.

They didn't put a shield on this run of Gold Glitter, Ed. Never had one, so no hole. By the time it was inspected for flaws, it was finished, so no shield decision was available to them. They put the shields on before assembling the blades springs and scales.
I am a beginner at this. . . . .
I'll be lucky to get handles onto this knife in an acceptable manner.
I'll try a shield some other time.

Fun fact - while custom slipjoint/lockback knives use fractional diameter wire for the pin stock, most production slipjoints/lockbacks use wire gauge diameter wire.

Thanks Charlie. Now that you mention it, I do recall that someone said none of the glitter-gold handles got shields.

This is turning into a neat project. It'll be interesting to see where it goes. Don't forget the old saying; "First times a charm". I guess we'll see if that's true.

It's interesting to see how close to the edge of the spring the pin holes are. My suggestion for scales is Desert Ironwood. They would have enough visual appeal to not need a shield yet still be a fairly stable material to work with. Ebony always looks good and would be cheaper, but I think it would be nicer to have something that GEC isn't currently using.

This is a great thread and I can't wait to see how it turns out. Thanks for sharing your progress with us.

The only thing left to do before I start is assemble a small sanding machine I have purchased.
I have several choices of handle material (still haven't decided which to use). A friend in the industry sent me some pin and rivet material.
Life gets in the way of these projects, but I am looking forward to it!

I'm very interested in the outcome as well. I've started a similar project, but failed to take pics of the before. Actually disassembled it yesterday.

What is GEC's thing with that gold glitter acrylic anyway? Did they get stuck with a truckload of it or what?

I have a bulldog Cheetah with scales like that glittery gold. I like it. My Christmas knife. :)

Did you ever finish this???

Well, someone finally did, Wade!
Thanks to Evan!

Did you ever finish it GM?:D

How often did you have to change batteries in that old handle material Charlie??

They don't sell that type of battery any more, Tony!

Great thread, man. Looking forward to the next installment.

It took a long time, but it's finally here, FG!
started in 2011 - Imagine!!

The results:
Third cut stag, with multiple dye applications. Not the intended color, but it seldom is with third cut. Great color nonetheless!!
Only one blade and one spring used - maybe there will be another one blade out there somewhere - Evan?

Glad to see its finished Charlie, like you say, life gets in the way... ;)

I'm looking to do something similar, I've done a few scales with 60 year old ivory piano key laminate, (I better not say that too loud these days) I have a busted gun stock that belonged me, my Old Man was the last one up have the gun, I want to turn what left into a handle or scales for a knife.

That came out knice Charlie , I'm developing a liking for single blade slip joints these days.

Looks nice.
I'm inspired, too. I have an old serpentine stockman marked 'Sword and Shield', a brand I'd never heard of. Solingen, Germany. The spring for the secondary blades broke, and I've been meaning to take it apart and just make a single blade out of it.

I've always preferred natural materials, but every once in a while I see a picture of that glitter gold, and it makes me a little nostalgic for '70s motorcycle helmets. I think it might be fun to carry something like that once in a while. I doubt GEC will bring that one back, though.
