incoming.. custom, Duane Dwyer SNG in the ultimate of super steels, CMP REX 121!

Check out this English knife makers chopper made out of CPM REX 121. Hes into cutting and chopping competitions.
Here is a link to all he had to do to even cut the steel. The guy used 5 ceramic grinding belts just to profile the blade.

Well, Bad news guys. I got the custom today and quickly realize the SnG is too small. It was a very nice knife but for my purpose the SMF is a better fit. It was a lot of money for not being a perfect fit for me. I called the dealer and he was very cool on the matter and offered me a heck of a deal on a GG Digi SMF. I will say that the blade on the custom was more bead blasted as opposed to a coated blade. I could tell the tool steel was going to take a patina with little effort. Anyway, the DDC REX121 is going back. I am not sure the REX 121 tool steel will/would make a good EDG regarding durability in the rust staining dept. I am sorry for getting ever one pumped up but that would be a lot of coin for a high cosmetic maintenance knife.

Think of Rolex or Omega like a Strider or CRK knife except you have to pay for service out of it's warranty time. When you send you watch in for general service, it is fully detailed like new. These are watches that last for generations. You do get what you pay for.

I know this is a knife thread but it looks like it's turning into a watch thread.
I'm kind of a watch nut myself, not as pricey as you but my question has to do with weight. I own a nice Seiko dive watch and I don't wear it very much because of the weight. I recently bought a titanium Traser military that works for me. nice and lite So do you find the Omega heavy. I could see one of those in my future if they aren't to heavy.

I was looking forward to pics and the review. See how the edge retention was. I wonder if it really is all that an a bag of chips. now we will never know. :(

Sorry. If it were not for the fact of EDC use. It would be a good test. My main issues with the steel from what I have seen is there is absolutely no stain resistance to the steel. That would not be a big deal but I dont want to have to treat a EDC all the time for excessive patina or worry about excessive staining on a very expensive custom knife. I planned on using it. Thats a lot of work for a $900.00 knife and kinda kills the beauty of the etched blade. A $350.00 grunt knife, no problem.

As for the watches... The Omega Planet Ocean 45mm is a heavy watch but it is sits very balance on the wrist. You get use to it very shortly. The weight gives the watch a solid heft feel in a quality diver. Kinda like a women says her 2 carrot diamond ring is on the heavy side. You get use to it.

So you're getting the SMF right? I would and I agree that the SNG, like the small Sebenza and XM-18 3" are all ridiculously small. Why bother for cool knives like these? If you want little pip-squeak knives with a laser edge, I'll send ya one of my Sanrenmu 710's Or, a single edged razor blade (mini crisis card) ...lol :D

Yup, A SMF DD with digicamo. I loved my SMF CC, but the GG is soapy tits.:D

The funny thing is, I sold my SMF CC for what I had in it. Striders really do hold their value.

Whoa hold on there. I dont think that corrosion would be that big of a deal. allot of people use carbon, and HSS like M4, and M2. Bottom Line; if you want that kind of performance, then it's not going to be stainless, unless you go with carbide, or a cobalt or nickle based alloy.
Besides Rex 121 is only 60% Fe so that means it should be at least 40% more corrosion resistant than 1095, or the like.

that if that guy with the Rex 121 Chopper used 5 ceramics to profile, how the hell is he going to put a bevel on that? its half an inch thick! and look how thick he is intending to leave the edge before heat treat (scribe lines). He is going to be an unhappy camper grinding that after its hardened. besides the heat treater is probably (he better be) using salt baths.

Lets just say I did a quick little cause and effect demonstration today with out hurting the knife. It doesnt take much. You might as well carry a silicon rag in your other pocket if you EDC it.

Farid confuses me pretty often. That kind of steel for a chopper? Doesn't make a bit of sense. As experienced as he is with highly alloyed steels why didn't he re anneal the steel when he got it. Instead he just went right at it with belts, probably making it even harder as he ground it.

Oh well. I'll not pretend to understand why Farid does what he does. That was likely one very expensive chunk of steel to be experimenting with.

You spent that much money on an Sng and didn't know what size that model is?

I knew what size the sng was. I handled a few but after living with a SMF, the sng seemed to have shrunk smaller than I remembered.

very interesting thread. congrats on the knife! how is this CPM Rex 121 in terms of corrosion resistance?

Hello, I will let you know when I have finished these two knives, they are the first CPM REX-121 knives ever made. I wanted to try the best steel that Crucible makes, I think by the time they are finished I will have used around 40 to 50 ceramic belts.
regards
Farid

Since you asked the question, I will answer.
The steel in the annealed state is around 57-58 rc, it cannot be annealed any more, Crucible has sent me that CPM REX 121 in the softest state possible.
I hope that answers your question.
kind regards
Farid
