Independence Day Giveaway

I'm glad you posted that! Thanks!

You're welcome. This is a great story of a young man overcoming horrendous obstacles and going on to be one of the greatest athletes in the world. I got a little misty eyed reading this today.

I'm sorry, I completely overlooked that part. My blood was boiling when I read what the Chinese have done in regards to our athlete's visas and their ability to compete. Everything up to that point kinda "went away".

I focused on the story about this young man and what he's gone thru and overcome to be where he is today. The fact that he survived his ordeal in Darfur and the US Olympic team recognizing him as their representative is the message I took away.

The power of political statements in the Olympics sunk home for me when John Carlos came and talked to our Civics class of about 30 students in high school. This was 1969 or 1970 when it was still very controversial what he and Tommie Smith did in the Mexico City Olympics. Having a Darfur survivor lead the USA Olympic Team in the Opening Ceremonies is a very powerful statement (at least IMHO).

You're correct PG. I calmed down a little and re-read the article. I think what has transpired is very important, and will be viewed by future generations as a turning point.

Very good link! Thanks again!

At least we can claim the moral high-ground in this area. Providing an opportunity for and recognizing athletic greatness no matter where you come from. We've come a long way since 1968 in Mexico City.
