  • Today marks the 24th anniversary of 9/11. I pray that this nation does not forget the loss of lives from this horrible event. Yesterday conservative commentator Charlie Kirk was murdered, and I worry about what is to come. Please love one another and your family in these trying times - Spark

Inexpensive with good quality like Victorinox, Mora and Opinel?

Mam knives have better heat treat than Opinels, and i love Opinels, but all my Mam knives perform better, are easier to carry in pocket...will get more of these...try them
Really? I've long considered a Mam 2043 Operario Sheepsfoot Linerlock Knife. They're not a lot of money, but I wasn't sure about their product quality. Thanks for the input.

Yeah, theyre not perfect...but very good knives,i have that linerlock sheepfoot model, excellent knife, like a straight razor,it has some minimal blade play but is very good knife and especially for price,as blade geometry is very good, along with heat treat,i like it better than opinel and have about 5,6 opinels...i have 3 more mam knives, and love them, excellent performers, take good edge and hold it and are easy to sharpen and carry too.

My new Artisan Biome is exceptionally good for the $30 if you're looking for a slipjoint. I'd happily put it up against anything 3 times the price in the slipjoint world.

Use it to slice your bagel, then spread the cream cheese.

I've got an Opinel #8 folder, but for fixed blades that function well and aren't overly expensive, I don't think you can beat Morakniv. At Mora's upper end of knives they run up against Condors and I like them a lot too.
When you start talking about the Garberg or Condors, then you are into the kind of money that will get you a Jääkäripuukko (if you are willing to forgo the excellent sheath and settle for the plastic liner) that will out-cut either of them.
Edit: the Jääkkäripuukko and other Varusteleka knives have blades by Lauri.

Some of the other Nordic tool brands are pretty good. Bahco do a Mora for a bit less and a solid wrecking knife.

Hultafors do a budget bushcraft knife called the ok 4 I have been meaning to try.

Cold steel have a really good budget range. Like the kobun if you wanted a tactical.

And condor do some fairly cheap interesting stuff. If you like stuff.

I have about 10 Opinel. Carbon and a few stainless less.

The carbon is easy to sharpen. Holds an edge about whst you would expect for a simple carbon steel at middling hardness. I would prefer harder steel, but I still carry and use the carbon versions. I have several in their stainless, which is just as easy to get screaming sharp, but seems to have a bit better edge retention and seems a few points harder.

[...]
I've lamented that for years. I understand why they use the steel that they do, but man, if they'd put out a limited run with M2 HSS at 66 HRC, I'd buy it at any price. Fantastic cutting geometry!

Moras are pretty good,i just wish they made higher grinds on their knives ,or flat...at least to have options...full flat is way more useful in my opinion.

Every so often (not very often, really), @ FortyTwoBlades will put flat grinds on some Moras and offer them for sale at Baryonyx. In the meantime, there is the 511 Flex. Or, you could look to Old Hickory or Dexter-Russell Green River.

I never found banding to be 100% reliable and you take a big dock on price for calves that are still carrying one. My vet said to cut them all and that is what I did as long as i was running my small herd.

My friend was the rancher. Typically the calves are about 400-500 strong at one roundup. At roughly half male, That is a lot of cutting!! The banders are not 100%., but if they fit, they use the banders.

I have dexter rusell green river, couple of their knives, theyre pretty good too,I regrind moras by myself on belt sander...

not all of us agree...i have no respect for opinel...have one in the kitchen..

Beautiful. How hard were they to install and to get the stock ones off?
I'm a dufus and it's so simple a kid could do it. You prise off the old ones, put down a drop of glue, put on new ones and clamp down for a few mins.
