Infi…are my expectations too high

Looks like you may have found a knot in that wood. I chipped my NMFBM in a couple of places and just sharpened them out.

That sure little looks like virgin steel, this is common to happen on most unsharpened knives. Several people will immediately sharpen a knife upon recieving to eleminate this from happening. As far as expectations being too high, you should watch my video of my TGLB vs a solid paver stone...Infi is amazing.

As for bothering the shop for a small ding that can easily be sharpened out, I would personally sharpen it, a WorkSharp will make you super happy.

Is it possible that that there was rock embedded in the wood you were cutting on?

Why do folks freak out and say 'you shouldnt have made this thread!'?

Why are 'problems with your busse' supposed to be handled in secret? This company has this subforum for what? Fanboy drool generation only? This is why places like this exist. Ol dude has a edge issue on his blade. Not uncommon on power sharpened steel, and apparently its well enough understood and accepted by folks who just sharpen the tiny bit of burned metal off the apex and continue with no problems. They expect to have to do that, so they must not have too big a problem with it.. But if you raise the issue, suddenly folks have sand in their.. Anatomy. ..

Would someone explain why they think this should not be posted about? I cant seem to understand the resistance to showing a 'problem with their busse knife' in a public forum.

Btw, I dont think this is a 'problem' with the knife, rather a problem with not understanding the preventive measures taken by you regular Busse beaters.. I mean lovers..

I certainly didn't mean to ruffle the feathers of anyone. Without question I should have contacted Busse first ( after I saw the thread at the top of the forum page). But it was too later immediately turned to this fine forum and all of the knowledgeable members for their support and guidance. Hope I didn't piss Jerry or anyone else off too much.

Nobody was freakin out, sometimes their are minor flaws in knifes-it happens-Instead of Immediately reaching out to the social media, one should contact the manufacturer and advise them of the problem (in other words allow the manufacture to fix, repair or resolve the problem) If the Manufacture does not take the appropriate actions needed to make things right, then it is the Individual's right and responsibility to post what occurred and to make other potential buyers aware.

Don't you just love it that this is a place where emotions are quite high in passion for a certain product, so much that any little issues that arises, the heat of the heart rears it's head before the brain had a chance to make better choices? :p

I Agree with what you said. some threads like this usually has negative publicity with manufacturers. that being said, most Busse fanboys are objective unlike Becker and Emerson sub-forums where they know the manufacturer puts out 7/10 crappy products (with proof) and still they defend it to death. all I have to say is, you CAN'T go wrong with Busse/kin's.

I have had many factory edges get dull very quickly, not loose the complete edge but just loose the razor edge fast. After the first touch up the edge always holds like it should. Other than S30V I have never had one to micro chip that I have noticed.

Looking at your pic again it does look alot like S30V micro chips. I never had them to happen again after a good hand sharpening. I am guessing the sharpening at the factory heats up the very thin edge and makes it brittle. The hand sharpening I guess removes that brittle edge.

Sharpen it out and wail on that bad boy. Tis but a minor flesh wound and it's begging for more love :)

There have been occasions in the past where brand new edges come good after a sharpen or two, from what I've read here on the forums. I had this happen with the first FSH I bought. For the life of me I could not get an edge on it, the steel seemed soft and mushy. Then all of a sudden - bang!! Crazy sharp and tough as hell!!! It was as if the edge had an 'outer shell' of softer metal with the good stuff hidden just beneath it. One of the best knives I've ever owned! I reckon that's what you're experiencing here, hence my comment about sharpening it out. Awesome knife btw! The ASH1s are amazing!

I've got a diamond DMT with a coarse/ fine side. I guess some time on the coarse side might get it back in shape.

I've had the same experience with infi.

Brand new, it chipped on a plastic bucket. I'm not sure why, i think my infi had a coating of bad steel, once I sharpened on some stones, it is durable as heck.

I agree that problems should be discussed in this forum. Once there is a roll in the blade, and you steel back the edge, Is that section of blade weaker or more likely to do it again?

Well, This is some sort of extraordinary situation, from my experience with Busse and Busse blades! In my opinion, instead of flaunting an issue to everyone, I would contact Busse next time, first. They are feakin' amazing! I am in the customer service business, and I LOVE to fix customer issues, but my nightmare is someone advertising a customer issue to the world before they give me the opportunity to fix it. Busse is GREAT! They will take care of you time and time again!

I have dealt with a maker (leather, not blade) who would not stand behind is shoddy work, but I have dealt with MANY other makers who have good ethics and integrity and do the right thing. Busse is one of those!

BUY MORE INFI! DRINK MORE!

I've chipped some blades. As a rule of thumb chipping may be decreased by making a more obtuse edge bevel. About 42 degrees inclusive seems about right for a big hiking knife in INFI. Without seeing the blade I could not say if this was the case here. However, the idea that chipping indicates a problem with the knife is one I would tend to disagree with generally. Rather, chipping tends to be a behavior that presents when the apex of the edge is too thin for the application.

From my understanding, that's very common for a new blade fresh out of heat treat. It's essentially a decarb area, and once you sharpen through that, you get to the steel's qualities brought out with the heat treat.
I've experienced this on a number of blades that I've made (HT by another party-Bearclaw knives to be exact, awesome guy and Highly recommended).

One of the reasons I recently stepped onto the Hog train is because of the durability of Busse & kin knives and the way they stand behind them.

Initally I was hesistant, very hesistant to invest the $$, however it didn't me long to figure out that the team is rock solid, their gear is rock solid, their repuation is second to none.

If I bend, break, chip or other, I will be looked after.

And now there's all this uber cool stuff on the train and no way in hell I'm getting off!!!
