INFI vs S30V

INFI seems to produce a nice toothy edge like S30V. I'd love to hear some intelligent discussion contrasting INFI and S30V from any of you HOGs in the know.

Thanks!

I don't know about the difference, but that's the 2 steels I buy the most ! :D

S30V is a stainless CPM steel, that has good edge holding. It isn't bad for Folding knife use. It absolutely sucks for fixed blade hard use, as it is not a tough steel by any means. INFI is a hard use steel that holds an excellent edge, is extremely tough and has extreme abrasion resistance. It is not nearly as corrosion resistant as S30V. If you are going for a light duty folding knife S30V is adequate. If you are going for a fixed blade INFI is the only way to go. Really, these two steels are not even in the same class and I am not sure why you would pick S30V to compare, as it seriously lacks toughness.

How about S3V? I hear talk that it is tough, at least in smaller sized blades, but that i makes great choppers too?

i remember a while back, not too long ago, spydercos and also sebenzas with s30v blades had a problem with edge chipping.....

a lot of people reported that under normal use, not even close to abusive, the edges of these blades would chip out......not huge chunks, but definitely chipping....they would cut cardboard and the edge would be chipped.....plastic zip ties, things of that nature....

they also reported that after a few sharpenings, the problem would go away by itself....

S30V makes a O.K. folder, BG42, ATS34 and 154cm make good folders.

.

I think saying S30V makes an "OK" folder is an overstatement. I have had nothing but terrible results with it. ATS34 and 154 CM are definitely better from my experience.

I can't stand S30V :grumpy:

I have had some that chip out when you look at them. I can't understand why Reeves uses it although I have never had a problem with a Reeves S30V folder other than I find the steel hard to sharpen.

a lot of people claim that striders are basically busses of the folder world in terms of toughness......

aren't striders made of s30v steel???

The S30V in my Strider SNG has performed excellent, and the knife been put through its paces on the family farm and at my old job. But I would like to learn more about the chipping problem so I know if I need to up grade to a different folder.

Just so I got this straight.

The S30V in your Strider has performed well. But you want to know if there is a problem so you can upgrade.

I battoned my Sebenza through some wood yesterday, hacked limbs off of a tree, the other day I made 100+ cuts through the Christmas carboard and haven't touched it up yet. There are no micro chips, there's no loss in edge performance.

I took my SFNOLE out yesterday too and beat the livin' crap out of the Christmas tree. It too is fine after a good chunk of abuse.

I'd say they're both pretty good.

i don't remember if the striders suffered from the same chipping problems.....maybe they did, but there are a lot of strider fanboys, and perhaps they were too embarrassed to admit that their blades were chipping.....

the problem was well documented in the CRK and spyderco forums......but i got sick of reading those threads.......they would start off well enough, but soon enough, someone would chime in with "xxx knives suck, get a xxx knife"....

just became pissing matches......

I've had s30v in three different brands now and none of them chipped. Spyderco, Benchmade, CRK. Oddly enough though, there are subtle differences between the three, but none chipped.

The S30V in CRK is tougher than others because it is not as hard as others. Only about 56 on the Rockwell scale.
