Info on Calypso jr. please.

I absolutely LOVE,LOVE,LOVE the burgundy handled ZDP189 Calypso, Jr. This is my absolute FAVORITE Spyderco model, ever!! I can not say enough good things about this knife!! I too vote tip up. How about a pine green linen micarta handle? And ti bolsters?

I guess the next question would be what?

The ZDP Caly jr seems like it would have supported more pieces, but I think a lot of that was due to the lower price. A ZDP Caly jr with front bolsters and jigged bone scales (or ?) could run close to $200. I question the market to support even a 1200 piece run.

Also there becomes a question of the clip; type? location? (up/down, etc).

Opinions?

I'd stay away from bone. Some like it and some hate it. It would be a dealbreaker for me.

Since we're thinking out loud about new Caly Jr. designs... There are lots of neat-looking G10 types out there now. Blue/black, silver, tweed... How about a blue/black G10 with liners?

Hi Sal,

You've always talked about how sales sharply decline with incremental price increases. IMO a $200 Caly calls for a Kopa-sized run of 600 at most, and probably less.

I would treat it like the Anniversary Delica, but without the extra fancy box (Civilian pouch maybe?). 500 pieces. Limited edition. Call it the Calypso Mediterrano or something else gentlemanly. :)

Clip? How about the same clip and placement as the original jigged bone Jess Horn?

Jigged bone? $200? I have to save to get the $100 Caly!:o
I was hoping for the big Caly with a ZDP189 blade.

If the price is going to increase that much, wouldn't a second sprint run of the ZDP-189 FRN handled model (possibly in a different colour) likely sell better? All over the place I'm reading that people missed out on the Burgundy model, and the welcome it has received has also increased demand.

Spyderco seems to have the upper hand with this steel here, as nobody else is really using it yet except WH. Why not capitalise on this 'monopoly' while it still exists? Give it a few months and ZDP will probably be used by in a great deal more production knives.

I know the ZDP Delicas are out in the next few months but the steel works really well with the CJ's blade geometry.

G'day Sal,

I think Carlos is right on the money here. I see this as the ultimate "gentleman's folder" so natural scale material please, i.e. wood or bone, not G10 or micarta (OK so my age is showing :)). Maybe ZDP-189 isn't really necessary for this model, VG10 would keep the price down and be quite satisfactory for its intended use. I had envisaged it with one bolster like the Anniversary Delica so it would be best tip-down but with a fancy clip, maybe like the Kopa or Jess Horn as Carlos suggested.

Thanks for listening.

take care,
clay

Bolstered & bone handle seems a bit over the top to me.

On the one hand, I would like to see a locking ZDP UK Pen Knife. That would satisfy my need for a next-generation Calypso Jr with better handle materials (and, frankly, a better handle). I wouldn't mind upscaling the handles from the Pen Knife's G10 to some nice micarta, like the old 8A micarta Calypso Jrs had. That would make our fave gents' scalpel looks really classy. Secondarily, carbon fiber might be nice.

I pretty much agree with you. If you're going to use ZDP-189 again, do another run in FRN, possibly in a different color.

If, on the other hand, you want to do bolster and scales version, then go all out and do it as a high end gent's knife. No clip, Damasteel blade, and wood scales would be my suggestion for that.

I like the way you think.
A locking ZDP UK Pen Knife would be a must have.

I believe that America is ready for a release of a locking UK penknife. IMHO this would be the ultimate variation of the Calypso Jr.

Here is what I see as an ideal future for the Calypso Jr. I've been dying for a small FRN compression lock for some time and I think that the Caly Jr would be perfect for this. Would it be a little thicker than it is now due to the need for skeletonized liners for the comp lock? Yeah, but that a concession I'm willing to make for the comp lock. I make absolutely no secret that the compression lock is my favorite lock. I can't carry a knife the size of most of the compression locks very often at the present time. This isn't due to anything other than personal preference. I'm a 3" blade 4" closed kinda guy, and I don't find much more than that necessary. It's important to note the
4" closed part especially because I don't like anything much bigger than that in the pocket. G-10 for a handle on it would be ok but I prefer FRN. Come on Sal, if not the Caly Jr, just give us a small FRN comp lock in the near future (would be willing to settle for a small SS knife with an Integral compression lock as well).

I would not buy a Caly with bolsters like a wanta be Kopa. I agree with Joe Talmadge in wanting a Caly with nice micarta scales like the origional. Premium steel, nice micarta, tip up carry. A EDC slicer supreme, nice scales, easy price!:D

I have and carry a UK PenKnife which I rotate with a Delica and although I don't find it necessary for this knife to carry a lock I believe it would need it to sell in the US. I find the UK Penknife more robust then either of the Calypso's I previously owned and with the S30V blade is equal to my ParaMilitary in cutting and slicing. But, I have to wonder whether or not it would be a seller at the extra cost.

I hear alot about micarta, some prefer it over G-10. What is the feel like? It looks like it would be kinda slippery. The grippyness of G-10 has secured it as my fave.

I have found a source for a grey handled Calypso jr..
The new laminated blade steel one is very nice but this one is more affordable.
Any info on this model greatly appreciated.
All i know is that the black frn handled ones were the first issue.
Were the grey handled ones a sprint run ?

also any pics of the grey calypso?
thanks,regards,Rick.
Would you please share the source? really want that grey one!

Now there you go! That would be a knife worthy of true lust. Use a very dense wood and stabilize it.
