Info on performance of a convex edge???

Rick,
Great post. Thanks for sharing your discovery.

Do you know of any web sites or videos on sharpening a convex edge with a stone?

Which 2 stones do you carry into the field?

I received my first convex edged knife this year - a Fiddleback Nessmuk. When running a finger along a convex edge, or checking it on a fingernail, does it "feel" different than say a normally bevelled edge? That's the way it feels to me - and I know Andy grinds a mean blade. I played around with the edge a bit after watching those videos, probably to the blade's detriment. It can shave arm hair only with difficulty, but it can slice through very ripe tomatoes no problem. does this sound characteristic of a convexed blade or am I just convex-challenged?

I recently made myself a new convex sharpening jig. Its 24" long and 5" tall x 2" wide. I made it out of 3/4 plywood. Its like a big plywood rectangle. I glued leather to the top of it. I clamp it to my bench, and clamp sanding belts to the jig, and I have a 24" pull to sharpen the knife. Man, talk about making sharpening fast and easy. The longer the pull you use, the easier it is to maintain an angle.

I like leather as my backer, because it isn't as soft, and allows you to use more pressure.
