Info on R.W. Loveless knives...

Yes, I believe he still is. Did you get the November issue of Blade mag? There was an article of him mentoring some guys in his shop, and some photos of him making some knives.

Bob is the man behind the designs, but he hasn't made any knives for a long time.

I sure hope I can shake the mans hand someday, he has been making knives for a very long time, and its incredible he still is.

I have a Guardian II, designed by Loveless in absolute perfect condition, with Guardian II printed on the handle and R.W. Loveless engraved on the blade it from the 70's and thats how I got to know about the guy.

I have met Bob 2x....the first, he was the prototypical sonofabitch....

The second time, he selflessly gave me about 4 hours of his time at the AKI, posing for photographs, a video interview, and telling me about his entire history with Gerber knives.....it was remarkable.....like you, I was captivated by the Guardian series....it started my serious collecting, buying at retail price at Knife World in the very early '80's.

Bob has had production partners since the late '70's....there was no way he could keep up by himself....S.R. Johnson was one, it is now Jim Merrit, a fine knifemaker in his own right. He has not made a complete knife by HIMSELF in a long time....that is the truth. Another truth is that what is currently coming out of the Loveless shop is the best that it ever has been.

Best Regards,

I stand corrected, sounds like a good guy.

Thank you for posting thei Steven! It's on the money. Jim is brilliant! And like my Big Brother. and since I've nevee had one, it's been wonderful. Bob is more like a father to me. Always has advice when I need it.
There is ONE maker being mentored. He lives somewhere in TEXAS. It can be read about here.

WOW! Eight years behind!!

Yeah, I was kinda wondering how to order right from the shop, but that clearly answers it. Why does he not take orders anymore? Getting too old?

In a future far-far-away. I'm 8 years + behind now.

To make it worse, the Loveless shop is no longer accepting orders. :(

Well, when you get down to it, that about sum's it up. :(

Which is kinda where I come in. That was the whole idea behind the Loveless Connection Knives. But still, -:(

Bob's the kind of guy who only wants to make knives for certain people these days, and on his own damn time! :)

I was headed out to the Plaza Show when I saw this post but didn't have time to respond.

First thanks for using one of my Chutes for your example! It is a classic. I started off on my Loveless quest by buying Guardians, too. I still have the Gerber Guardian set in the wooden case.

STeven was pretty close with his values. I didn't see any for sale at Plaza but I'm sure there were few around. The interest in Loveless designed knives has really grown. Bill Ankrom and Ron Newton had a great show, both featuring knives in the Loveless style.

Mike Lovett couldn't attend but was gracious enough to send two knives! These were from his personal collection and they drew a lot of very positive comments. The knives were sold using a lottery system and unbelievably I was drawn for both! Thanks, Mike!!

Hopefully, Steven will do one of his super reviews of Plaza and I'll chime in on that.

The good news is, one can usually find and buy many or perhaps most Loveless models if knowing where to look and willing to pay what's asked.

Also, prices vary among knife model quite a bit depending on option. For example, amber stag can raise the price of the chute knife in the opening post by as much as $5-6K.

Amber Stag does not add $5 to 6k to a Loveless Chute.Regular Chute approx. $10-$11k,Amber Chute approx. $12-$13.5k

Win Heger, How about a couple pics of those Mike Lovett knives you just picked up? I would love to see them, Thanks David
