Anyone know of any good whiskey resources?
I'm tired of tasting whiskies with folks and having nothing more to contribute than "i like this one" or "i liked the other one better."
Where/how does one learn how to detect tastes/ingredients/etc?

Dunno about whiskey.
In college I took wine-tasting.
Twice. :D

Just say things like "nutty" and "vanilla." Then say that it lingers..... That should get you by. It's worked for me.

I was feeling particularly voracious this evening. Went to one of the "decent" local BBQ joints. Got the 3 meat sampler (Pork, Sausage, Beef) with garlic bread, potato salad, and baked beans. Then added a half slab of ribs... My stomach rumbling has been quelled

They have holes in them :)

Figure out where your pants are first, then we will go from there.
That's worth an LOL. I'm really glad you're not one of those first initial, middle name sorts of guys like, ya know G. Gordon Liddy. But then again, that woulda been a really stupid thing to do, given the your middle name. I'm also glad that my parents went with Michael, given that their first choice was Howland. I know I would have turned out completely different if I'd had to endure all the torture that name woulda brought down on me; I often wonder what the hell parents are thinking when they name their children sometimes: I have met a Galadriel who's brother was named.....Aragorn (big LOTR fans, I guess), a kid who's parents named him Mason (last name Dixon) and even my wife, whose name I will not say, but if you were to google it she is the first 20 entries in the search results. Unique, to say the least.

And the rumbling of something else has begun....

No Bighoss its not Mike. Thats pretty much a 3rd grade mentallity joke that I've lived with all my life. If that's the best you got, then give it up.

My middle name is in fact Michael, not Mike. I'm not Catholic, but I come from a very strict Catholic family. I was named after the Archangel Michael that lead the army the cast Satan out of heaven. Joke all you want about it. But I'm proud of it.

I don't know anything about whiskey except for the friends that drink it. Several years ago I bought one of them a bottle of single malt from the coast of Scotland - Dalwhinne was the name IIRC and he loved it. Here in the Granite State we have the state sponsored alcoholism program, with state liquor stores strategically placed (right on the major highways!) at the border exits and also throughout the rest of the state. There is a LOT of info on their website. They have a, let's say, comprehensive selection of many things, including whiskey. What I know is that the store provided taste info has led me to some truly great bottles of wine (not that I'm much of a wine drinker, so, grain of salt there); here's a couple of whiskey links, and the rest will be up to you:American Whiskeys
Imported Whiskeys

Speaking of whiskey, a mate of mine got me a bottle of 12 year old Glenfiddich for Christmas. I got him a Case Stockman with a bone handle and leather sheath so I think we both did pretty good! :D

My name is indeed Todd GSO. However, there's a long standing joke that I'm not gonna take the time to explain, basically, you can't expect most of these fools to remember there own name let alone MY name. So, I say as long as it starts with a T, that's close enough.
My name is Todd, but all my friends call me anything that starts with a T.

Whew!! That's a relief...I thought I couldn't read your website correctly!

You want to talk about tough names. I went to an all-boy Catholic high school in St. Louis (St. Louis University High to be exact), and one of my classmates was named Richard Wacker. He spent the whole four years insisting that his nickname was "Rich". He was also one of those guys that developed kind of late, so gym class was particularly rough for him if I recall.

when I showed up at my 20 year HS reunion I ran into a couple of the guys who made my life "interesting" from 4th grade until i enlisted.
One of them's eyes got big and he said "holy F**! when did you get BIG?"
needless to say, I didn't hear any of my less liked nicknames from back when that weekend.

I knew of a couple of guys from the area I grew up. One named "Richard Rash" and the other "Dick Pieper". Incidentally my middle name happens to be Richard as well.

Haha, the middle name thing really doesn't bother me, its more of a annoyance that I've heard it all my life and every person that says it since thinks they are the clever ones that thought of something that nobody else did. Its like you said, nobody ever says anything to my face. I really don't care either way really. MOST all of you on this forum, (especially the snark) are my friends that's I've met and know personally. Just thought since it was such a mystery on what my middle name was, id let you know that there is substance there. I take no offense to it. Takes a lot more than that.

This seems like the right place for a strategically truncated quote:
"... He has a wife, you know. Incontinentia..."

In high school, one of our competing schools in my particular varsity sport was an all-boys school. Their mascot was the Winged Beaver. I 5417 you not.

Bigg Richard Hoss....it does have a certain ring to it!
