Hmm nutty tones huh

Good morning all! Just a few minutes to relax with my second cup of coffee before leaving for an eye doctor appointment and grocery shopping.

Speaking of "nutty tones", this Colombian coffee is fabulous and also has nutty undertones.

What makes it particularly good is that I ground it this morning from whole beans that my daughter brought when she visited at Thanksgiving. They were roasted by her the day before she brought them up. After graduating from Texas A&M Magna Cum Laude with a degree in Communications and minor in Sociology, she went to work for a coffee importer. The green beans are shipped in 100-200 pound sacks (depending on region, different sizes are standard for each region) in ISO containers on ship to warehouses on the east, west and gulf coasts. The growers express ship (FedEx or UPS Air) samples to the headquarters where my daughter works with about 8 or 9 other people. She is in charge of cataloging the samples, then roasting, grinding, brewing and cupping a half dozen or dozen each day for her and the QC staff to sample. She then compiles and records notes so that they can track grower quality over time. They always have way too much left over, so she can give the excess away to friends and family in small bags. She's brought home Kenyan and Columbian so far on her visits, but I'm really hoping for some Sumatran... But this Columbian, fresh ground and brewed a cup at a time with my re-usable Keurig filter is pretty close to a religious experience.

Now, back to my revery....

My dad has a Keurig, I'll be honest I'm substantially less than impressed with it. I've compared it to a Bunn, and a Mr. Coffee. While it is fast, so is the Bunn. The Bunn also produced the best flavor with the Mr. Coffee in second. The Keurig was watery, it used more grounds per cup, and I never drink just one cup and usually more than two cups of coffee in the morning.

Hmmmm. That is the opposite of my experience comparing the Keurig with several different drip machines. I don't find the Keurig watery at all, but it does use more grounds per cup. Since I generally only have two cups a day, it winds up being less wasteful for me than trying to brew a two-cup pot. At work, they have a two burner Bunn, but that stuff always tastes burnt to me, so if I need a caffeine hit at work, I brew a cup of green tea. It's probably the lousy industrial grade coffee grounds they use in it though.

Also a different in the style of carafe, the best coffee I've ever had from a drip machine was a Bunn in a double walled stainless steel carafe, once it was brewed there was no more heat applied to it which stopped it from getting burned.

Morning! Chugging some coffee, then gotta start some Rockcastle chili. Having a couple friends over for a silent supper. No talking, all sign language.
That would be nice...except for me not knowing ASL. I've got the screamin' nieces on the way from PA; one of them (she's 8) actually does yell most of the time - when she's on the phone, I generally hold it at arm's length to lessen the chance of a ruptured eardrum. I gotta find some discreet noise reduction ear thingies.

Have fun with your dinner, C-Bear!

I always eat pickled herring on New Year's Eve, a tradition I got from my mother. Would this work or does it have to be fresh?
Hmmmm.....member of the tribe, by any chance? OK if you don't wanna say here. My mom used to get those jars with the pickled herring and the cauliflower and pickles (I think) along with some smoked whitefish at the deli when I was a kid. I was the only one of 4 kids that would eat any of it. Haven't had it in years....probably have to have my mom here to actually finish the jar...I seriously doubt the wife or kids would eat any of it.

Well, for any watch fans out there, I got the watch I had previously mentioned, and I am more than impressed. Allegedly the improvements Casio has made in the gen 3 sensors in terms of power usage have extended the battery from 6 months on a full solar charge to 23 months, which should mean no more throwing the watch in the chandelier to charge in the middle of winter. Improvements in terms of size to the new sensors means my watch is now smaller than a Bob Evans biscuit, and considerably lighter. Here's a pic for those interested:

Previously I fell in love with their PAW-1200 watch due to the compass, barometer, altimeter, and my favorite feature, the automatic light. This model has all the same features, as well as increased radio reception, and listing of sunrise/sunset times based on lat/long. For those who are not familiar, the automatic light kicks on when I rotate my wrist like I am looking at my watch, and the light sensor determines the ambient light levels are low. Coupled with the solar power charging and the atomic clock syncing, I don't know that I could go back to a different style of watch.

Don't be discrete. Make a point instead!
I'm trying to maintain the peace - I don't think the SIL would take kindly to me wearing my big Ryobi active noise reduction ear muffs.....or bright orange foamies either. I can always retreat to my sanctum, though.....I did just have back surgery, ya know. And I'm not afraid to use that as an excuse. "Run away! Run Away!"

Either that, or bring out the Holy Hand Grenade!

Not sure which tribe you are talking about, so probably not. My mother is not entirely sure of heritage, but vaguely Northern European. My father is 100% German, third generation born here, but they stayed in their little German community in rural Missouri.

And speaking of German, here is a bit about Christmas in Germany...good stuff.

It's supposed to start at the 1:40 point, but sometimes the link doesn't work right.

Whoo who! I just finished up the last 3 knives I HAD to have done before X-mas! Whatta huge weight off of my shoulders. Think I'm gonna take a break for a few days. Where's the beer?

Sexy watch, shame it's going on YOUR wrist.

Sweet looking watch.

so.
was supposed to have the in-laws over for group holiday dinner and gift exchange -- all week we've been saying "there's going to be a storm - do you want to reschedule?" and they all repeatedly told us "no problem, we'll be there."
so I stayed home from work yeaterday, cleaned house, cooked, and worked on some projects. Her folks canceled around noon yesterday, as did one sister - who has 4 sick kids....
at 11:30 the freezing rain and sleet started -- we called 2 of the sisters we were pretty sure would show and caught them loading their cars - and told them "stay home - this could get dangerous"

so now I'm going to be eating turkey for the next 10 days....
