Injuries

No pics, but recently, I was trying to cut a free standing hair with my newly sharpened Fallkniven U2. The hair was @ 7-8" long and the knife was not doing it at slow speed, sooooo...I decided that success was only a matter of "giving it the gas" (more speed :D). About then, my brain disengaged totally and I ended up cutting off the tip of my left index finger--about the size of a dime and beneath all the layers of skin. It happened very quick. Fortunately, I just missed the bone, but my fingerprint will never be the same.

I did exactly that with a laminated mora once. I hit my left index finger on top of the middle of the nail and it exited effortlessly out the front middle of the finger (and then effortlessly through the hair). It took off a lot of flesh but it regrew 100% perfectly- no scar, no change in shape, nothing like that.

I haven't cut myself since then.

Not the right thread to go to while trying to enjoy some dinner..:barf:

What did you expect?

Just wondering if one slept with a sharp knife and got cut, like, didn't feel it because the knife was so sharp? Is there a chance of bleeding to death.
Probably huh? guess I'll put my toys away real careful from now on, I fell asleep with a knife in my pocket the other night.

That's all about variables, if the knife was securely closed or had a safety switch on it activated, like a Kershaw then you'd be fine. If the knife wasn't closed securely and it opened up in your pocket while you rolled in your sleep then, well, figure that one out by yourself.:eek::eek:

I thought it would be entertaining (in a way) if we posted some pics of injuries we've sustained from our collective obsession. I know I don't consider a knife truly "mine" until I've bled because of it, though I may just be accident prone when I get a new knife.
Let's hear some of your stories and maybe see some pictures if y'all are game.

No pics. I rarely cut myself.

Just wondering if one slept with a sharp knife

I draw the line at sleeping with my knives.

For injuries, worst was a knife dangling off a counter. I hit it with my hand when I reached for it and it did a perfect cartwheel into my foot. Thunk! Blood shot about 12 feet, a few stiches and still have the scar.:thumbdn:

mine was with a stanley knife cutting hose at work, got used to cutting with a dull blade had a bright idea and swapped the blade for a new one, zip right through the hose and through my thumb..just missed the tendon, bled like a SOB

A couple weeks ago I was cutting some plastic bags of gravel open with my JYDII with D2 composet blade and I lifted up the bag with the knife still in my right hand when the bottom of the bag split open, my right hand jerked up and the blade graised my jugler vein. If the knife had not been dull, from cutting some cardboard and hitting a staple the day before, I would have bleed to death in a few minutes.

Another time I was flipping open a Xikar 188 and the liner lock jammed and when I forced it over the blade sprung closed on my thumb, slicing it open to the bone.

Guys, guys! you are even making TheCarbideRat wince! OUCH!

Had my first knife injury today, after sharpening my SAK Soldier snapped it shut with the fleshy part of my finger in the way, cut a nice V out of the side of my finger. Fortunately it was really sharp and no pain what so ever (really surprising when you are bleeding an can't feel it).

Plenty of other non-knife injuries with other tools however, my worst to-date pushing down on a screw with a flat-head screwdriver that slipped of the screw through the underside of my thumb and out the nail on the other side and into the table. Being a blunt flat-head that hurt like hell.

The next nearest trapping my finger between the crank and the peddle on my push-bike ripping off all the skin and flesh and nail down to the bone of the tip of my pinkie finger.

I seem to have developed a good pain threshold now from other injuries over the years.

I was using the bathroom, and took my BAD out of the sheath to keep it off the floor. I finished my business and put the BAD on the magazine I was reading, on the sink counter.

After washing my hands and turned off the lights and thought to myself, "S***, the magazine!" and turned to pick it up. Right after I picked it up I felt something slide and instantly knew what it was.

The tip of the blade landed on my second toenail, right foot, through a sock!!!!

Here is a pic after I superglued that bitch of a cut.

I have had worse, but never the instant idea to grab a camera.

I fileted the tip of my pinky while holding an apple and misjudging the length (and sharpness) of my knife.

The worst was either spinning a balisong "charlie chaplin" style, but with the edge of the blade contacting my finger, rather than the spine. That was a nearly 360 degree cut close to the first joint of my pointer finger...... That took forever to heal.

The other candidate is when I tried opening an industrial sized can of tomato juice with a Busse Game Warden, and splitting my palm open as I foolishly tried wriggling the knife in the lid. Or slicing through my thumbnail at work in the bar on Cinco de Mayo, while cutting limes (read: LIME-SOAKED blade) for a whole S*%load of Coronas.

Cheers

I accidentally removed the side of my index finger while whittling. Cleaned it, folded the skin back over, and bandaged it with gauze. No scar.

It's really not that great of an idea to be supergluing all your nicks and scrapes. Cyanoacrylates are a skin irritant, toxic, and form a carcinogen on skin. The "superglue" used for suture-less closures is a special low-toxicity formulation. You can get it without prescription or certification. Brands I know of: Traumaseal , Dermabond, and Liquid Bandage. They're cheap.

I generally only use Super Glue to hold the wound closed until it stops bleeding....

I clean the wound thoroughly, and then seal it with New Skin liquid bangage/antiseptic.

Thats what I do for good sized cuts, havent needed any real deal sutures except for surguries....

PS: I also remember a post a while back from someone who was either a vet, or married to one. They said that the glue they use for animals is nearly identical to the stuff used by hospitals, but readily available to public much cheaper.....
Just a thought. I havent personally picked any up, but I havent had the need to in a while.

Is the knife ok?

but seriously hope you're alright, and take the medical steps so you don't permanently lose the feeling there in your thumb.

The knife survived! My thumb remains, but my finger from the other accident is half numb, a week later.... Maybe should have gone to the hospital instead of the 'ol jack daniels on the wound with a belt in my mouth technique....

About 15 years ago I was carving with a dull knife, (young kid, sharpening wasn't taught to me) I managed to get my folder wedged in too deep and had it bind.

since I have no pics, let me describe. Look at the palm of your hand, you know that big meaty muscle at the base of your thumb right above your wrist, I had my dull knife stab through and stop on the bone, I still have a 3/4 inch scar. (the skin bunches up around the scar.)

I got lucky and had the presence of mind to cup my hands to keep the blood from spilling all over my mothers carpet ran to the bathroom only 10 feet away and started rinsing the blood, about a quarter roll of toilet paper held the blood back till I could get some duct tape.

took off the toilet paper, the wound had closed enough that small movements wouldn't make it gush put some fresh TP over the cut and duct taped it on.

nothing tops a cut Achilles tendon though, isn't modern technology wonderful?!

You will gradually regain feeling with a bit of luck, although some cases do not. I don't know what to really advise but here is my experience. The next phase after numbness is hyper-sensitivity, nerves trying to re-connect [I have it now in one of my fingers which I stabbed to the bone months ago] If you don't go hyper-sensitive in x amount of time you might have a problem. Finger/hand surgery is expensive.

Good to know the knife is alright! :D

My first knife injury I think I was 14 years old - first knife I ever bought was a Benchmade Emerson 975 - tanto chisel ground 3.875 inch ATS-34 blade. It came nice and sharp from the factory. I was opening and closing it until I was so good at it that I didn't need to pay attention to what I was doing - closed it before my fingers had moved out of the way and took the corner of my ring fingertip almost all the way off. Just missed the nail. I didn't feel any pain, just a bump when the blade hit. I knew I had screwed up so I put the knife in my pocket. A minute later I glanced down at my hand covered in blood and realized I had been cut. Luckily it was such a clean cut I just flipped the flapping chunk back to where it was supposed to be, held pressure on it and then bandaged it up. It healed nice.

Dumbest way I ever cut myself was wrestling with a buddy of mine - we had a 5.5 gallon glass carboy full of bleach water sitting in the yard and it got knocked over and shattered. I was barefoot. We kept on wrestling until I got him pinned, and pushed good and hard with my right foot and felt a grinding crunching not good feeling on my foot. I got up and had a jagged curved gash on the inside of my foot near big toe about 2 inches long. I got 10 stitches on that one.

worst cut was a couple of years ago when i cut most of meat off the pad of my thumb. I was cutting those clam-shell packages with cardboard backing with my Byrd cara cara combo edge. I wasn't paying attention and the knife got stuck on the cardboard and I put more force behind it instead of pulling the blade out and start over, and sure enough the blade slipped and took off a big chunk of my thumb. the chunk was stuck on the blade btw. my right thumb no longer has a fingerprint and it has never grown back and it still is a little hypersensitive.

WOLFJOHN! OMFG! That is absolutely horrible. I commend you for not knocking his teeth out.

To all of the other's, HOLY SHITE!!!!!! I can hardly bare to look (esp Sparky), awesome!!!!!

I have a decent story though no pics.

Was drunk, and opening my spyderco repeatedly, as fast as I could, yeah I know, very stupid. Well it caught the top of my finger flesh and drove into my finger nail. I shit a brick, my buddy hooked me up with liquid band-aid which hurt about a million times more than the cut. Right after, I had to piss. Another bad move as I was dizzy and sweating like a pussy from the liquid bandaid. While urinating, I managed to pass out. I woke up with my pants around my ankles, my head on a scuz nasty toilet, and my uncut hand in my own piss water.

Dont drink and play with knives.

I got a good laugh out of this. I'm the worlds worse about sitting and not paying attention while I flip my knife open and shut. I have been pretty lucky so far. I don't have any huge injuries to report although, I don't consider a Spyderco mine until it's cut me. I have yet to buy one that it didn't get me at some point if I used it.

The only cut memorialized on film would be a cut I got the first night I received my combo edged full sized Manix. I don't normally even buy serrated knives but this one was a good deal. I no longer own it and still do not like serrated blades.
