I've got all the materials for an etcher, but now I need a stencil. I'll be buying stencils from Ernie, but I'm still working on my design. What do you guys think of what I have now? Please make suggestions, and/or modify the picture.

Here's the full sized image:

Here's it at 1/2" x 1/2":

I like the design overall but it took a couple of looks to figure out that was a J, if someone did not know your name it may take longer. I would try to make the J a little more like someone would expect.

Something a little more like this?

I wasn't sure whether or not to do that, because if you don't know my signature, you wouldn't know my J.

That does look more like a J, Just for astetics I would try the top loop just a little smaller, there is a pretty big open space in the middle, the height is ok just the width.

I think it looks great but if anything could be done i would make the top of the J a bit smaller...and if you want to go crazy then add a smilely face in the center of the J haha...

This is about as small as I can go on the upper J. If I go any smaller, it won't look like the J in my signature.

Ernie (stencil guy) suggested making the M thinner, so it is now.

My personal preference would be towards a dignified, quite small block letter sig. Of course, I am biased to my 1/32" high sig. stamp.

I thought about using my 'signed' last name but decided against it for a number of reasons, one being that a regular font looks way better.

I would say that the M should be the same height as the loop in the J, it just doesn't look right otherwise. the slanted 'ones' is rather off-putting to me. I think all the lines should be the same thickness as well.

I think the M looks big now, I actually measured it on my screen and it's 8 3/4" and the loop on the J is only 7 1/2" so it still looks a bit funny, but that's just me; I guess I'm partial to standard graphology rules.

Maybe a dot would help or maybe put the M inside the loop of the J??

To be blunt, I think if people see the bent "Jones" they might think there's something wrong with the knives too.

Sorry man, just my humble opinion.

This is a lot more standard, which I may like. Thanks for your opinions 69.

I like the straightened 'ones' better. Mine is PHELPS, in a really plain sans-serif font. If I etch it deep it's stamp-esque.

That is definitely more pleasing to the eye. the only thing I'd do now is a tiny space between the J and the dot.

I like that. The original was nice, but this is read across one center line, which is nice.

Have you shrunk this bugger down to 1/4" or so? It's all for naught if you can't read the thing when it's small and etched!

I would not have the Jones angled at all. Looks like a mistake. Use the part of the J that dipps down to be where I'd have "Knives", "Maker" or state or something written below the "ones" in Jones.

Also, try another font maybe or simply

Changed spacing, and size of the "ones"

Are you totally set on using your signature ? It seems so . Some people have real nice hand writing , mine is just terrible and yours is not much better . You told me once you had thick skin . Do you want to make a really nice knife and have an ugly signature ?
You are good with a computer , get creative .
