Insults to knifemakers

I don't worry about it. Can't blame people for asking about a discount. Just say "No, that's the price" and let the person make their decision. I have patients try to wheel and deal with me ("Will you give me the $120 x-rays for free, or take $40 for a $140 exam?") on occasion and it's no big deal. In my case it's illegal to take anything less than my set fees, but I think it happens to everyone at some point. What ticks me off is when patients try to tip me. No thanks!

I can honsetly say I have NEVER heard of ANYONE 'Tipping Doctors' ??

I tip my Bar Maid... I tip my Barber... I tip my Waiter... I even give the homeless guy $$ now & then... But my Doctor, I don't think so Tim! :p

I think there is a fine line between it being an insult and just a person trying to get a deal. As a factory knife dealer there is a MSRP and I would set my prices where I could be flexible and still make a little profit. Handmade, custom knives I feel are different in that there is labor involved. A maker sets his price at what he feels his time is worth. If someone asks for a much lower price then the asking price, I could see where it could be insulting. Personally I don't get insulted. I set a price and if they don't want to pay it well then, see ya ;) I try to price my knives to where you get a good handmade knife at a fair price. I feel the fact that I give a lifetime guarantee is fact enough that I stand behind my work. So why do you need it discounted. For my regular customers I will give them a little off because they're good to me so I'm good to them. Life is a two way street.
