Interested in Traditional Folders...what do I need to know?

You've received some good advice so far.

Another tip is to spend a month watching the Which Knife Are You Totin' Today thread here, it'll give you a lot of food for thought about what you may like.

However, it leads to the other thing you 'need to know' Prepare to lose your mind ...:D

...and your financial stability, LOL!
For EDC's you can't go wrong there. I also have the stockman, a very affordable knife to have in your pocket.
I have a small collection of Colt pistols so I couldn't pass up a vintage NIB Colt branded Black Stag Canoe folder, too! I'm not sure why I really didn't look at traditional before! They are so interesting and the options are limitless!

True facts! :thumbsup::thumbsup:🤓
Hope you enjoy your recent purchases!
Here's a couple of photos of the Marbles ram's horn canoe I have; I love the "crater" on the pile side, even though I suppose it's actually a "flaw".

That is really cool! That is the fun thing about natural materials...no two are the same! I think I definitely made a good first decision/purchase!

Arathol, what is the large rams horn skinner (second photo) in your post above? Thanks!

Swiss Army knives are traditional, (100+yo) well made and readily available at B&M stores so you can find one that fits you.

lotta nice advice has been given so far, so ill only add a little tidbit. buy what you love and love what you buy. sometimes being patient really does pay off. for example even today there was a great deal on a recent gec's sfo release that id never thought id see being sold below release price

Lots of great advice on this thread. Another thing to think about is possibly going fishing in a certain bay area for a duplicate of your grandpa's knife to carry around & try out.
Like you I got this old Imperial Barlow from my grandpa. They can be had for a very reasonable price. These old knives are really under appreciated. Even after all the years of use the action is still tight & the blades take a razor edge with little effort.

Also it would be a good idea to grab a headlamp to go down all the rabbit holes where this leads... As we all know from experience 😂

What I haven't figured out yet is why the huge difference in pricing between Marbles, Rough Ryder, Case and all the way up to GEC, UN-X-LD and Tidioute? I mean we're talking $18 to $500+- differences for knives that all look very similar? Seem like the Rough Ryder's aren't a bad deal with the included lifetime warranty...how much better is a Northfield? Is it the Name Tag Tax mostly? (I'm not asking to offend...I really want to know and I also want some of those top shelf brands, already!)

That's a good question...there's something to be said for the name recognition, the quality of materials used, the country of manufacture and labor practices involved. Also, warranty, demand for a certain brand or pattern, and the fit and finish of the knife.

the country of origin and quality of materials are a factor here. Rough Ryders are made over seas. Case and GEC are made here in America. UNxled and tidioute are specific tier offerings of GEC. Northfield/UNXLD have fancy trims while the tidioute are not as gussied up. Farm & Field even less so. Same 1095. GEC does offer ss from time to time, and did offer D2 tool steel at one point. Now a former company called Queen, did the same thing with Queen level Schatt and Morgan tier level. Dont get me wrong, there is nothing wrong with rough ryder. They are very affordable and fun to try new patterns of traditionals with. Case, i never liked their blade to handle ratio, so I do not own too many examples of. But yes, many would say top shelf would be GEC, they are certainly the rage when it comes to production traditionals. Also look into canal street cutlery, we do have their old cutler with us in these parts but he has since gone independent and releasing his own stuff, which is quite neat to see as well if you can catch the release. Look up ea42 ea42 or the alber's thread.

Volkswagen vs. Porsche... they'll both get you from point A to point B. G-Shock vs. Rolex... they'll both tell time. Rough Ryder vs. GEC... they'll both cut.

One big difference is that some makers, such as Rough Ryder, can produce more knives in a day than GEC makes in an entire year......There are plenty for anybody who wants one. GEC, not so much, there are only a handful made of any given pattern and they are in great demand.
