Interested in Traditional Folders...what do I need to know?

One big difference is that some makers, such as Rough Ryder, can produce more knives in a day than GEC makes in an entire year......There are plenty for anybody who wants one. GEC, not so much, there are only a handful made of any given pattern and they are in great demand.
This is a good point too! Supply and demand do often dictate pricing!

I would say go for vintage. Learn about old brands and makers. Old patterns and their original purpose. You can get so much fulfillment/satisfaction for not a lot of cash.

My traditional interest ebs and flows, but right now I’m back to vintage after a GEC spell and it’s brought a lot of joy back. The hunt is fun. Diamonds in the rough are fun. Unique things I didn’t know existed are a thrill.

Yikes I must be getting old! Ha

Something interesting I'm seeing are some custom/semi custom makers here in the USA are aligning themselves with companies in China. Evan Nicolaides ( esnyx esnyx ) who kinda started here at Blade Forums a few years back, as some of you might remember, won Best of Show and Best EDC at this past Blade Show Texas with a Silver Line Workhorse Front Flipper. The country of origin for the knife was China and the award was awarded to ESNYX/Reate - Reate being a Chinese company.

This is not a knock against China knives as I have several knives from China and think highly of them. It's just a point of interest that I'm seeing.

There was also an article/interview of four USA knife manufacturers in the April 2024 issue of Blade Magazine where one of the manufacturers noted that some companies are importing knives with Chinese manufacturing costs but selling those knives at high USA manufacturing prices. The article/interview had to do with why it is so costly to do business in the USA.

On a previous post, VW and Porsche are the same company, and many of their products are very similar to practically identical, - slightly different tuning of engines, different body , but the same basic car. Even Lamborghini does that, in the VW group.

Now, to scare people, a theoretical scenario, a few years from now GEC closes as the owner retires and the name/company😱 is sold to lets say SMKW, who just use the name and the brands in whatever way they find suitable

Have you priced any of the higher end Chinese products lately? Seems like capitalism is alive and well in China......

My first of several traditional folder purchases rolled in last night! Semi-vintage Colt Black Stag Canoe folder! I'm not sure who made this knife but I am a huge Colt fan so it was fun to find this little guy on eBay! Here is a quick pic until I can do a proper photo shoot with some of my other Colt knives and guns! More to come! LOL!
