Interesting blade failure on a Sebenza...

Very important people I suppose.

I really enjoy design of Sebenza, especially Insingo and Regular. But that cult around company is ridiculous.

Cult
I've been here a while and have seen less of it with CRK than many other brands.
I love many brands as most do, but some do stick with only one or two.
Some Manufacturers have their clubs here, with the club name or number in their sig lines(and not a thing wrong with that), but I've never seen CRK owners try to form anything, much less a cult.
They're popular, if that's what you mean by "cult", but being popular isn't ridiculous. It just means many like them, just as they do with many other brands.
I've also noticed CRK owners VERY seldom bash any knife brand, or their fans(cult members, lol).

The one pic that actually shows anything of interest, outside of the actual gore of course :p, is the one pic that seems to show what happened. The pictures are obviously terrible being either bright sunlight or dark shadow but there is still stuff to see....

IMO and as already said, the press fitted thumbstud started a crack and oxidation over time did the rest. Looking at this picture there is an obvious dark patch on the surface of the break from the stud to ~1/2 of the way down the blade. (This area is also in shadow from the handle, I know, but there is more there above the shadow) When you look it lines up with a "step" in the break showing what would be the meeting point of the sound blade material and creeping corrosion. What could cause an actual break when the corrosion is at that stage is probably not much. :)

I just came across this: The guy describes washing it and wiping it off against his pants, and the blade breaking across the thumb stud hole from merely the wiping pressure...

Of course a one-off, but I thought it was remarkable enough to share here, since he provided photos: Blade was apparently S30V:

(snip)....

CRK of course came through on their warranty....

It is from a French blog site "A couteaux tires", on the page "Couteaux Chris Reeve, L'efficacite pure et pure"

Yep, you're spot on man. Honestly, I think it's because CRK is a brand that pretty much everyone deeply respects even if for some reason they don't like the knives, which can't really be said for all manufacturers. There's no need for fanboy clubs or cults when almost everybody appreciates the company.

I certainly did not catch it before, but this makes all kinds of sense.

Pretty amazing that you picked that up from those horrible photos. :D

My guess is this was no S35VN blade, probably a BG-42, wich rockwell hardness could run up to 62.
Most likely abused or dropped or pried with it, not by wiping his pants
Just a thought...

To be fair, to a new member on the forums (and I was a new member witnessing all this over a year ago) it seems that Sebenza owners talk about their knives and/or photograph their knives an extraordinary amount of time compared to other similar knives, giving the feeling of an obsessed audience swooning over their fancy $350 knives. I know it's not the case, and that Sebenzas are well-made, useful knives with a long history of fantastic F&F, but for some reason the vibe surrounding the knife here on the forums seems to go beyond just simple admiration, leading to people getting an impression of a cult-like following where there isn't, and coming to their own conclusions about what that means to them personally.

That sounds like an extraordinary amount of bullshit....

No seriously, have you been reading the same forum as everyone else? Sebenza owners are the most low key posters on here. They're nothing compared to they ZT fanboys.

Ssshh, talk like that'll get you lynched. Just let them chant and congratulate themselves and they'll move on.

I'm not here to get in a fight, just pointing out my experience when reading GD, it's obvious we don't see the forums the same way and that's why I posted, to remind people that just because your interaction with the forums is one way doesn't mean that others don't see it completely differently than you.

Ssshh, talk like that'll get you lynched. Just let them chant and congratulate themselves and they'll move on.

Dude, you're trolling way too hard, give it a rest. My point was that 2 people can see the same things and come to different conclusions, not that anybody was part of a cult.

Go back and read some of your responses to members not loving the Military. Come back and tell us that's not a fanboy. Funny how you can't help yourself from trolling CRK threads. Perhaps you should go take a few more hardcore pics of your Military posing with some food...

Its a 21, so the only way it would have a bg42 blade would be if someone swapped out what it came when th for a much older one. Not too likely. And the first post states that it was s30v.

I agree with his cult comment. I have only been a member for a short time and have also made this observation. A lot of CRK owners are ridiculous, especially on here. You can't criticize them in any way, even if it's completely justified, without 15 fan boys jumping down your throat telling you about all the awards and how they are the best. Look at all the ridiculously defensive comments in this thread alone. CRK seems to attract all the elitist, egotistical, narcissistic types. I almost wont own one just so the normal knife people don't assume I'm a douche bag when I show it to them lol.

I'm not saying all CRK owners fall into this category but, a lot do imo.

Ok. 100 knives, according to CRK. Funny how this one happened to make international notoriety. So basically, one breaks. From wiping on some pants. Perfect pics are taken, in glorious resolution. Perfect, unblemished pics. In France. Now, this user/pants wearer/professional quality photographer just happens to not only be a "regular joe", but knows exactly where to post these pics for maximum impact. not to some local Frenchie knife collector's club, with a few guys, but to somewhere where people in other countries actually take notice. In an internationally viewed and regularly trafficked area...not saying it's impossible, but i generally play the odds. Guy used it as a prybar, or on a dare, or drunk, probably all three. made a big enough stink in "the right places" to make sure he got a new one.
