I got my Endura 4 yesterday and it was in one of the padded envelopes which I read not to use. Shipping for it was $8.95. I got my Spyderco Ladybug today. It was in a USPS Small Flat Rate box which I think costs $4.85. Needless to say the Ladybug is a tiny thing and was so well protected. The Endura 4 box was slightly indented, not enough to make a crease, just barely visible. They came from two different vendors, too. I wonder what the sellers base their prices on. I have shipped fairly good sized cameras all the way across the USA for $9.00 many times.

Label prices are based on weight and zone and the service class. If a packer drops a product in a standard Priority envelope and the scale says 1lb 1oz going across country the cost ($8.82) will be higher than a flat rate envelope or small box but less than the other flat rate offerings.

It can get involved but if a vendor is in the Midwest his average selling "zone" may average out as an advantage to using one service over another. A vendor mailing folders with packaging that fits in a flat rate box is foolish to ship any other way unless his volume and product diversity is such that the exceptions cost more than they are worth.

If the vendor is bigger than a one man shop, meaning the person labeling the package is not the same one that packs it, without watching like a hawk anything can take place. I would guess the higher cost package came from a larger volume vendor that shipped a greater distance, and possibly may sell many other products than knives.

My guidelines at one time were if it fits a small flat rate box use it; under three pounds and or $100 it goes Priority Mail; above that UPS. The exceptions were small but larger densely heavy items for fixed rate on a per item basis. One of those items was sandstone for carving. Did a nice chunk of business mailing 20lb. boxes of rocks at a fixed rate at $15 instead of $40 plus.
