Well it's almost here, the 1st annual re-handle your knife month begins in about 10 minutes. I've got a couple projects I've got going or planned. I'm gonna post them up to this thread throughout the month.

Anybody out there got any ideas for some handles they're willing to do some work on?

Who's with me?

Here's a couple of Amboyna Burl , I'll finish these first cause there for a b day present.

Their rough on the edges cause the wood was cut out on the edge of the tree. So it's gonna have the stag/ antler feel and look.

I have a few, waiting for grivory though.

Since the backside of each handle is hollow, what if you filled it in with a colored resin and then drilled into it from the other side? Say dimples that go through all the way to the whatever color resin on the other side? What if you did that with glow in the dark impregnated resin?

These are the questions I have. I shall have my answers!

I wish I had the wood working ability to make some scales out of this stuff...

Anytime I try to work with wood it comes out looking like that wooden pickle from the movie Bad Santa.

I have been thinking about picking up some of the micarta handle scales from KA-BAR, I wish they made some different colors.

I'm so in............

I have some material I've made, gonna try various things. I've been swamped with work lately (thank God) so I haven't been able to play much..and I also need a couple jig saw blades, multiuse bit for my dremel.. and a recess stop pilot bit.. oh and some screws still haven't picked up a good source for screws reasonably yet..

In this time I've also concluded that IronWood looks awesome.. I think our friend JV3 encounters this wood frequently, and try's to baton this beastly wood.. send me some pieces!! ;)

btw, doesn't wood have to be kiln dried and stabilized before using for scales??

my scales to come soon................................very soon, matter of fact its snowing right now like crazy, no ones getting out in this stuff... maybe I can find a way to cut micarta with a sawsaw?? or if I get out later I'll pick up the proper blades..

All forces attack. Go!, put pics here.
we'll get one of the mods or my 5 year old to judge it and the winner has bragging rights for 1 year.

Get crazy

I have been looking for some motivation to put new scales on a 30+yr old Old Hickory boning knife. This might do it. Not going to be too elaborate, probably just epoxy on some red oak and shape with a rasp. Little sanding, little BLO, done.

Does wrapping it in 550 count? :o
Absolutley, it counts. But don't limit yourself to that. Blow peoples minds with your creativity.
I'm lookin' for an orgy of lust filled handle, grip and scale artistry .
I'm lookin' for you all to step out, onto the fringe of fear, where all growth happens. And make some totally awesome art.
Proceed my good man.

Going to be sending out some scales I purchased recently

on the left is Cocobolo and on the right is Bocote

the Bocote is going to really pop with a hint of orange coming from it. esp when installed on the new polished blade

cant tell all that well from this picture, but the orange runs vertical on the wood

The extra thickness demanded new stainless hardware.

Next up, some micarta for a new SP48. GREAT knife for the money!

Thanks. Soldering iron. Tedious but it gives excellent results.
