International re-handle your knife month

I'll be taking pics thru the whole process. Patience..........
The Gen IIs are probably the best bang for your buck out there.

Hey stick- this help you any? Excuse the micarta dust on my thumb.

When I'm all done I'll post a short tutorial.

Thanks bud. Glad to see that it's not just a sliver of metal for a "full tang." Thanks again.

Just did these last nite. Stippled & added the liners.

The extra thickness demanded new stainless hardware.

Next up, some micarta for a new SP48. GREAT knife for the money!

Those scales and liners looks great, I am looking forward to the rehandle of Ontario as well.

I'll get some photos of my stippling job up soon.

I wish I had the wood working ability to make some scales out of this stuff...

Anytime I try to work with wood it comes out looking like that wooden pickle from the movie Bad Santa.

I have been thinking about picking up some of the micarta handle scales from KA-BAR, I wish they made some different colors.

What kind of wood is that? It's beautiful.

Proceed, attack formation delta, go now.

Scales cut to size and epoxied. Given the overall coldness here and that I used slow epoxy, I'll probably give these a few days to get nice and hard. I'll have some pics / updates next week.

I have exactly 0 experience in this area and am trying a hidden pin construction. All hand tools. I typically learn by making a mess of things, so we'll see how this goes.

Getting started:

Clamped up, epoxy getting to work:

Little rasping, little filing, little 80grit sanding we're getting there:

Still got some work to do, but getting there. These will be thicker than the originals.

I have 4 Old Hickory knives & love em. 6" boneing, skinner, 7" butcher & the cleaver. Don't chop bone with the cleaver, it will deform the blade. I pounded it back & got lucky.

OK here we go- The above pictured Ontario with it's new handle.
I'll post a more complete account later. I still have to fine tune it.

Knife with handle cut off, exacto knife handled this.

I had scrap micarta laying around, for this size handle I used 3 pieces. 1 for a guard & 1 on each side. Knife is going to be a beater anyway.
I drilled out the guard piece and filed to fit, then inletted each slab with a dremel.

After dry fitting everything, some gorilla glue and clamps handled the assembly.

I did roughen up the sides & tang to be glued, and drilled pin holes to match the tang on one slab.

Note rough outline of shape I was thinking about. Decided to pattern it after my Power Eagle.

Rough sanded to shape.

Not very hard, just alot of patience. Besides hand tools, I used a table sander & a dremel. Some rivets were fitted to keep everything nice and tight if the glue doesn't do it's job.

Handle strikes me as a cross between the aforementioned Tops, a Collins Raider bowie, & a machete.

Like I said, I might tweak it a bit. Shape it a little more to my hand and add a brass lanyard hole liner.
Hope this helps somebody out.

Sorry for the lateness of my reply. I never did that batch with those orange rags, however I did do these.
Was going for bright yellow and ended up with lime green, Oh well you can't expect top quality yer first time out.

On this set of orange, I picked out a color off of a paint chip and just kept adding pigment to the resin until it was close.
Instead of dyeing the rags I tinted the resin, the cloth is a canvas drop cloth.

Just put these in another thread, but since this is just for handles, I'll put them here also.
