Greetings all. I am not a regular to the "Traditional" forum but I have lurked here a little lately as I decided which knives to purchase.

I needed to replace my 2 working knives both of which have failed locks. I needed something strong but I wanted a knife that was traditional and not scary when I pulled it out to use.

I decided on 2 Great Eastern knives:

A 4 1/2" Tidioute Pioneer Linerlock with Burnt Grizzly Bone handle slabs GEMLT235108LGZ....and....

A 3 3/4" Northfield Scout Linerlock with Burnt Stag handle slabs GEMLN735108LST

I purchased them both from Mike at Collectors Knives and he was most helpful, changing his International shipping policy for me, and he got them out the same day.

I have never seen a GE in "the flesh" and I look forward to receiving them. Has anyone used similar models and can you comment on the safety of the liner locks and general robustness of the knives.......

It amazes me the friends we make in this business that can be half way around the world; which to a simple Oklahoma boy might as well be in another galaxy.

In the past we have had empty boxes show up in Europe or no boxes at all; thus little trust for the good old customs folks. But it is probably time to try it again especially if the USPS is going to offer insurance....

Steven is in for a treat ;)

You MUST, I repeat... MUST give us your impression of the liner lock, and what kind of grip it gives. I need to know if it interferes at all with the grip. I'm ready to pull the trigger on a liner lock at any moment.

Apologies for the stereotype;)....I have visited Oklahoma City twice and I had a fantastic time on both occasions. Fantastic Barbeque and a tour of Tinker AFB...Memories I will always treasure.

I'll have to say I enjoyed riding the "Talimena Twisties" on my motorcycle from Talihina, OK to Mena, AR while staying a few days at Lake Eufaula some years back. Some excellent hill riding.

6.0stroker
You need to get west of I35 sometime, we can stand on a 6 ft ladder and see 2 or 3 counties out here. But you must admit, the whole state is pretty, even the panhandle has it's own beauty.

The liner lock is a tab that goes in front of the blade tang, rather than under it like a regular liner-lock. The backspring tension remains, with the liner as a secondary measure to prevent closing. You would have to spine-whack the blade so hard that the knife would probably fly out of your hand before the blade possibly crush the liner and close on you.

I did not find the lock tab to be a problem for the grip, but I decided to file it down about 1/2 the original depth - which does not affect function - and that actually IMPROVES the grip, in my mind. go for it and be ahppy!

This past week I got one of the #23L's in Black Spiral Cut Buffalo Horn, and I don't find that the tab gets in the way of my grip at all. It fits right in the fold behind my knuckle when I fold my finger around the handle, I don't notice it too much. I would say go for it. I am really impressed with this knife, I recommend them a lot.

Steven, everyone I ever shipped to internationally said they would take full responsibility. But periodically something goes bad and once they figure out they are out a knife / money, some of their attitudes change a little. Then here comes the dispute; and since there was no good tracking they always get the refund. There are some whose word is not worth the air it takes to blow it. The new insurance options will keep customs out of it, then this issue will not be a problem in the future. Which leaves us free to ship to the good guys.

stroker, I worked in Bartlesville the first little bit out of college. Still have several friends there and in Nowata.

fishface, the linerlock actually works like most linerlocks in guarding the base of the blade. But they do have that extra lip that goes over the front of the blade. I think it is neat, but realistically it would take more effort to clip it off than just leave it; as that is the natural shape after cutting the liner to spec.

It sounds like you have been burned a few times Mike.
All I can say is that I have said it publicly on the forum and my word is worth more to me than 200 bucks.... As far as I am concerned you have been paid and that will not change no matter what.

Gents, let's please take the "business" discussion to email or PM. Thank you.

Customs agents seem to be avid knife collectors. I have sent knives to England and had the box re-taped with customs tape and only the most expensive knife missing.

But I can't say I blame people for not wanting to be out a bunch of money and no knife. But expect people to understand why someone would just not want to get in that position as well.

As a whole, knife collectors are very honest and ethical folks. And I have never heard of anyone having problems with a fellow forum member (any forum). The great thing about USPS insurance is that when they have a vested interest, they are much more motivated to resolve issues.

Also, FedEx and UPS are handling a lot of their international items and their customs is much more streamlined.

Gents, feel free to continue the discussion of international shipments, customs and the issues involved therein here.

Alfaholic, feel free to post a thread back in the Traditional Forum once the knife arrives. I'm sure many of the members await your impressions of the knife.
