Investment-grade knives

Being new to this world I have to take an outsiders view and wonder about the whole "investment" nature that people are speaking of.

I can't help but think back on the Barrett car auctions I watched a few years back. Muscle cars were getting way up in the 6 figures and I watched in disbelief as a guy with clearly more money than he knew what to do with paid 12 million for a "GE promotional bus". Those auctions affected prices for many a GTO around the country for several years. Check those same prices now. From what I've seen they seem to be waaaaay lower now. From what I could tell there were lots of guys with too much Internet money buying the cars of their youthful dreams. Nothing like a reality check to bring prices back in line.

I imagine that some of the same feeding frenzy occurs in the knife collecting world. I'm curious if there's been a similar period where prices went through the roof and settled back much lower.

The first thing that you would have to do, is to define what you mean by "a good investment". That certainly is different for each person. Figure out what you want, and then go from there! If you mean by good investment, something that you will not lose money on ever, look elsewhere, and let me know if you ever find it. :)

Kevin,

As you know, I have been collecting knives for over 25 years now....at NO point in my collecting experience has a Loveless knife been readily affordable to me.

I can handle them, I can even visit them at friend's houses, take pictures of them....but the knife that I really want(Dixon Fighter)would, at BEST "good guy" price, run me around $15,000, and I cannot justify that.

I didn't make Loveless the person he is...and certainly didn't make him arguably the most famous living knifemaker...but that is the reality.

Loveless knives are the definition of an investment grade knife.

Best Regards,

STeven Garsson

Actually, Steven, two of the most outstanding European modern custom
knife collections have been sold over the last few months.
Literally HUNDREDS of the most amazing Loveless knives changed hands
or are changing hands as we speak.
Won't this have any say as to the price of loveless knives? From what I am
told, no way, they are still going strong and the better pieces even stronger...

And wait till you see the amazing collection of Wolfgang's knives mentioned
somewhere in this thread.
They will be exhibited in my next book "Knife Art"...

All the best,
David Daron (ddd)

In the February 2017 BLADE MAGAZINE, there is an article entitled, "Under The Radar Knifemakers", in which top expertsnare asked their picks for some of the best knifemakers today who are not famous, YET"! That article could be a goid place to look.
Most of the experts polled are well known sellers of the very best in custom knives, so they know fine work when they see it. I think if You bought one of each of the knifemakers listed, You stand a pretty good chnce of making a few bucks.

resurrecting a ten year old thread is something I cannot abide. Welcome to Bladeforums, and please don't continue this practice
