Iron Dragons

The pictures set me over the edge, I just pulled the trigger on one after swearing Emerson's off in the past. Just curious, how did they ship it to you? UPS or USPS?

Congrats. Mine came USPS

Love to hear all about it. How's the action? Firm detent? Does it flick?

The detent on mine is strong but a firm flick does the trick. The bearings are very similar to the ZT 0560. One flick and it glides open. I'm not much of a flipper but one could easily push the thumb stud and flip it open. The G10 texture is slightly different that other Emersons I have, it feels rougher and seems that it will not smooth out like the others. Also I didn't realize until I received it that there is no liner on the G10 side of the handle.

Overall it's unique and pretty awesome.

Edit - the double grind is the sharpest knife out of the box I've ever owned. I think it could cut you by looking at it wrong.

Why did you swear off Emersons?

Poor fit and finish on the seven(!) that I owned. But the idea of a premium Emerson framelock with a steel insert will assuage my previous fears, I sincerely doubt there will be any lock issues here.

Is it just me or do the body screws not look like the typical Emerson ones? Also, is it a backspacer or standoffs? Looks like standoffs to me, judging by the number of screws.

Body screws are hex not phillips. And yes it has standoffs. Clip uses phillips screws.

Mine showed up today. Just 3mm longer OAL the Vindicator. The angle of photo doesn't make it look like so but it is.

Yes, very similar. Another pic of the Iron Dragon since I had a chance while getting lunch.

It is certainly smaller than the Patriot. I was handling both the Patriot and Vindicator this morning. I do like the styling of the blade more on this than the Patriot or Vindicator. I thought this was a bigger knife like the patriot for some reason. The center of the handle is more "filling" on the Patriot versus this which is more like the Journeyman than a Commander. Feels more like a 13/Tiger handle with the "pinky hook" removed to me. Just a 1/4" more handle length than a 15 for those that are curious but only 1/8" longer than a 15 OAL.

Recieved mine today as well.
Noticed that when in closed position the blade rattles a little bit. Seems like the detent hole is too large for the detent ball? Anyone else have this on theirs?

The 14 I have been carrying lately does this. I also have a 10 that does.

Got mine yesterday, by far the smoothest knife I've ever owned. I've seen people talk about the blade falling once the lock is released, this knife actually cut me under its own weight of the blade closing. Lock up is early without any play. And yes the handle is most similar to the Journeyman (my favorite edc), just a little taller. By using the titanium and no liner on the G-10, the knife is surprisingly light when compared to my other Emersons. So far my only issue (which is personally my own preference) is the they went to hex screws on the body...Why? I haven't disassembled this knife so I don't know how simple maintaince is. Anyways, overall I am pleased with this new blade and I'm sure it will find its way into my edc rotation.

^^ Hex screws are the norm for the framelocks like the HD7 and HD12. I've taken mine apart probably a dozen times now fiddling with it. Just make sure you put it back together with the hardened washers against the handle slabs, not the blade. Don't over tighten the bearing pivot! I have already seen a couple Sheepdogs with warped/deformed washers from such! If confident, hammer them back to a flat profile on a vise or similar.

I thought mine was off center on the blade but the entire blade is off center through the whole handle being that the recess for the bearings weren't cut a even depths on per side. Deeper on the G10 side so the blade ends up sitting closer to that side as a whole. The spacing between the standoffs and the adjusted pivot is the same so it might have been intentional.

The drilling in the blade is certainly larger than the detent ball. Mine had some play/slop while in the closed position with about 1/8" of movement at the tip of the blade. There is also the miniscule amount of movement from the lockbar flexing that little bit before the closed detent ball pops out of the blade. Another thing that can cause this is the fact that a small bur/curl along the outer edge of the lockbar insert can prohibit the detent ball from seating all the way in.

Remember that if you modify or file at anything, your warranty on the knife is VOID!

I've never ordered directly from Emerson, are you provided with a tracking number? I haven't received one yet, I'm anxious to get this one in my hands! :D
